DVI or Component Video?

What's better DVI or Component cables for connecting a High Definition set-top box to a HDTV ready TV? Can you see a difference between the two?

I've never actually seen a DVI display but DVI is better than component. However, I don't think you'll see much of a difference unless the source is of very high quality.

When I use my DVI on my Samsung DLP, the picture difference is alot better than the component video.

Actually DVI should look better, as it is a digital signal. Component video (from what I'm assuming of your setup) is an analog video signal, so the HDTV set top box would have to convert a digital signal to analog, then your HDTV set would need to convert that analog signal back to digital and ultimately display it on the screen. Using the DVI connection eliminates having to use the unnecessary digital-analog-digital conversion steps (which can degrade the signal slightly), since the signal stays digital all the way through.

Now if you have a serial digital connection (SDI) then that is a different story, since it is a component video signal that is digitally encoded. Highly unlikely unless you have very high end video equipment.

My personal experience has been that it really depends on the signal and the original source. But 9 times out of 10, DVI definitely looks better. It's a crisper, clearer image. However, there are times when I prefer the component input for a slightly softer, dimmer image.

i agree with most of people here.
it varies by source and equipment.
what kind of tv do you have?
if you have a CRT or RPTV(CRT), it shouldn't make much difference as they're analog displays.
another variable would be the size of your screen.
if it is smaller than 40", you probably can't tell the difference between component and dvi inputs.

I have a Rear Projection and I have seen a very dramatic change from DVI compared to component. I watch alot of programs in HD, and when I switched to DVI it even made the cable guy go WOW!!!! I want!. It just makes things look more defined and crisp, brighter. Yes it does blow my component out of the water. But I also have a DVI dvd player too so I cant go back to Component now
