Use a CD-RW until you fix the problem.
Or use one of the many tools out there that circumvent the copy protection. I'm not going to mention names, but they do exist. |

I also ran into iTunes erroring out with "Unknown Error 4000". I tried reinstalling iTunes and updating the DVD Writer's firmware; after the firmware was updated, the problem changed from an "Unknown Error 4000" to an outright hang.
Anyway, I ultimately got iTunes to burn to a CD successfully by going to the Edit/Preferences menu and on the Burning tab I set the "Preferred Speed" to 8x instead of the default ("Maximum Possible").
It's burning fine now.

When I had a problem burning CDs on my PC, I took a different route. I copied it to my desktop and then burned it. Never had another coaster or error message. And yes, PC can have memory issues even when more than enough is installed.
One of the problems that can be encountered when moving data between Unix and MS boxes is hardware and/or software issues; it isn't all that rare.
I had CD-RW heartburn with one PC until I found a PINE burner that was made by Mitsumi. Another PC puked over all Lite-on products; a Phillips burner was the answer for this machine. Today, CDs that won't burn on my PC will burn on my Mac and CDs that don't burn on Mac will burn on PC.
I don't know the answer; I wish I did.

Critical updates are mostly SECURITY PATCHES. YOU NEED to go and download EVERYTHING pretaining to your computer. There are many fixes for burning CD's. Again, its the Operating system and I would bet my life on it!
Now go back and Download everything that is audio/video related. I have been were you are many of times, not with itunes but with other programs. I would also not get behind on these updates.
I just had a freind that when after updating to XP she couldnt get her iRoc Mp3player to work. The first thing I asked if she had ALL the updates downloaded. She spent 2 days updating and it fixed it.

I've tried everything you guys have listed here, but I'm beginning to lose my mind because of blasted iTunes 4.5. I've reinstalled, checked to see if my CD-R is compatible...everything should work, but it doesn't. All I get is this error:
"The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred (4450)."
At first, I thought that maybe I'd been using an already-written-on CD-R, but Windows XP recognises it as a blank disc. This wouldn't be so bad, were it not for the fact that since I've installed iTunes 4.5, I can't use ANY of the other burning software I have on my PC. At all. Ahead Nero doesn't work, neither does Windows Media, or Roxio. And it was all good about a week ago, before I installed the new iTunes.
MY CD-RW drive is an internal (laptop) Matshita UJDA330. I can't find updated drivers for it from anywhere, but by the same token, it was working fine with the previoud version of iTunes. And even when I uninstalled the program, I STILL can't burn anything. It's like I've been cursed!
About 20 useless CDs later, I'm totally ready to rip someone a new orifice. Any help or suggestions at all would be appreciated. |

Just for giggles, can you try setting iTunes to put a 2-second delay in between tracks on the Audio CD?
Also, can you try adding some regular, unprotected mp3 files into your iTunes library and burning them to an Audio CD? And an mp3 CD?

Sorry it took me a while to reply, I was out of town.
I downloaded the new version of iTunes when I had the problem at first and it didn't fix it, so it had the same issues with two different versions of the software.
The drive is internal and quite new, but it's still older than the latest version of iTunes. None of my other software (Nero & Roxio), which are a year old and a few months old respectively, had any trouble. Shrug. I don't get it.
joako  - I'm not sure about the Windows update, I usually just install the critical ones. I'll check into that. I don't have DirectCD or AheadCD installed.

Sorry I'm late to the party (story of my life:) )
A couple of questions, what version of iTunes are you using? Also, is the burner internal or external?
My PC is probably similar to yours in that it is P4 2.4, 1Gig of RAM, XP Pro and using iTunes 4.5.
I just tried to burn to a NEC 2500a drive that is external on firewire and got the same message. Then I successfully burned to the internal Pioneer A04 drive. And, I think that I remember burning to the external drive with iTunes 4.0 - not sure about that though.
I'm not sure if the problem was in writing to an external drive, or writing to a much newer drive. The Pioneer drive is probably 2 years old and the NEC 2500 drives are fairly new. It could even be a problem with iTunes 4.5.

Do you have DirectCD or Ahead inCD installed? Have you installed all the updates from Windows update? I know some CD burning issues were resolved via windows update as there were 1 or 2 updates relating to cd burning. |

the problem I am guessing is Apple is really finding out how hard it is to design software for computers that are so non-standard in many ways pretaining to driver issues, poor code, hardware incompatability, a OS that tries to please all race, creed and doctrine and just poor built user systems (not yours Sarah  ). This is why Apples rarely have issues. And thats a fact.

You'll be pleased to hear I just got another coaster.  Guess it wasn't a bad iTunes install after all (well, aside from the crashing and locking up, that can't be normal behavior).
I'm thinking my solution is to coaster my way through burning the rest of the songs - seems to be about every other disc - and then uninstall the dang program and solve my 'Windows' problem for good.  I hate it when I can't get a potentially cool technology to work... seems like such a waste.

I wouldn't say that. Windows manages memory fine. The problem is when a poorly programmed application or a curropt something does something funky, then Windows freaks out (where the Mac simply slows down until you Force Quit it). I've had 10.2.8 do the same kinda crap I've had happen to me in XP. OS X recovers better.
As with the CD Burning issues... if other programs are able to burn correctly, it may be an issue with iTunes or with iTunes and your hardware. I think iTunes uses a 3rd party service (or it used to, the gearsec service), so you might be dealing with an issue with the program.
If you want to convert your protected AAC files to MP3 for your MP3 player, you can also set an audio recorder to "listen" to "what's on my computer speakers" which makes the audio program capture the sound as it goes to the sound card. Great loophole for any protected audio format, but, everything has to be done in realtime, and some audio quality loss may occur. But since the other method you also loose audio quality, just the time difference is an issue.
