 Speedstream 5200 Updated Firmware HERE

Update_E240_···_v2r.zip 1271650 bytes
(Update_E240_A4R_BC34_f093_v2r.exe)

This is the official firmware update from Sympatico for Speedstream 5200 users. I've been given authorization to post it here to expedite it's distribution to customers. This fixes the "Sync but no surf" issue.

The "Sync but no surf" issue is defined as not suddenly not being able to surf to any websites, despite the fact that your modem maintains sync, your login remains current, and other applications such as instant messenging programs continue to work. If this describes your problems, then you have the "Sync but no surf" issue. If you are having other problems, please start a new thread so we can diagnose your issue because this firmware is not going to help you.

It will not work if you are using a USB cable; you must be using the ethernet interface. And if you are using a router, you must temporarily bypass it to do this upgrade.

What I don't know is if this update will work on all 5200 modems that Sympatico has distributed, or if it will add the PPPoE authentication functionality for modems that don't already have that capability, or what other features are enabled or disabled. We do know this will not work if you have flashed the modem with some other non-Bell firmware.

If your modem looks like this, and was issued by Sympatico, then this update is OK to use:

There is no way to restore the previous firmware after performing this upgrade. If you are not having any problems, then don't apply this update.

IMPORTANT: IF YOUR MODEM LOOKS LIKE THIS, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THIS UPDATE ON IT:

Do not update this model

Hmm. If I get my other modem, I'll update it on that one, but I have a lot of settings in my router firmware that I'd lose, if I updated. Not worth the trouble.

I don't know where my 2nd 5200 is, but when i find it, I'll be sure to update.

Upgraded mine. I had a 060-E240-033 to begin.

First of all there are no line stats but the PPPoE client is now enabled (wasn't before) the web interface is very very simple with only a place to put in your password and change from router to bridge mode. Syncs much faster now and now the red power light flashes when it's running which I gather from the FAQ it's normal. I hope this fixes the sync and no surf problems I had though.

Is it really that "simple" (you don't have to change IP to 192.168.2.x)? Just run the .exe and hope for the best right?

If you are not behind a router it should work as long as you have an open PPPoE connection to Sympatico. At least it did for me.

It looks kind of... crappy. I think I'll stick to my router firmware.

page_fault,

Thx. I'm behind the router, so I guess I will have to rewired it before I upgrade. Are you one of those people with the speed drop issue? If so, have you tried using download acceleator(or Bittorrent) and try to test the new FW out?

Maybe it's too soon to ask. I wanted to try it out, but I just don't have the time now. Since I'm on wireless and my desktop is no where near a phonejack.

Yea, I'm excited about this new FW. If it works, then that means I lose about 2-3 minutes worth of exercise each day. heh

I never really had the speed slowdown issue but I had the problem when it would be synced and I couldn't surf at all requiring a power reset. So it definately fixes things. It also seems to sync instantly now, before it took like minute to sync up for some reason. I have already found an issue with using the built in PPPoE client, it doesn't forward any ports so you won't be able to use bittorrent or anything that requires you to listen on a port since they have removed the port forwarding feature. I have a router but I wanted to try to see what it was like to use without PPPoE being handled by the router (yes I know this is silly but I wanted to try it anyway). I will be using the PPPoE client on my router. Really unless anyone doesn't use apps that require listening ports the built in PPPoE client will be useless to them.

-edit-

Ok I have downloaded some stuff using DAP and it looks like everything is fine. BitTorrent is working fine (I hooked it back up to my router and changed it to bridge mode). I do notice some minor decreases in my ping times as well but I have no idea if this has anything to do with the firmware upgrade.

Re: Speedstream 5200 Updated Firmware HERE

Thanks MacGyver See Profile. It's storming here and the modem is acting up like usual. Updated the firmware and see how it goes during it.

I don't have Sympatico anymore, but I'm curious so I'll ask. In looking at those screenshots of the interface, I notice it asks for your Sympatico user id and password... does this mean that you don't need to use PPPoE settings through Windows anymore and simply connect to the modem using DHCP?

Yes, the modem has the PPPoE client built in. This will help those using game consoles connect to the internet, and reduce PPPoE troubleshooting from the client side. It's not DHCP.

Interesting... But if it's not DHCP, how do you give an IP to your PC?

You don't, it's static 192.168.2.1.

I updated both of the 5200's at work. Both were ocassionally experiencing the "sync no surf" issue. We'll see how they work now.

Thanks MacGyver!
Updated the firmware. No speed drops, no freezes, no sync loss. So far it works. Now if I can only get upgraded to a 3mb profile...
