Latest Norton Update: Symantec director

Any idea what this update does?

I believe that appeared on LiveUpdate last May 12. It is the Symantec Redirector. Here is a writeup from Symantec's Knowledge Base: What is the Symantec Redirector?

quote:
The Symantec Redirector (Symredir) is a set of shared network drivers that allow Norton AntiVirus, Norton Personal Firewall, and Norton Internet Security to filter incoming and outgoing data for malicious or undesired content.

The Redirector intercepts data coming into, or leaving your computer, and redirects it to a temporary location on your hard drive where it processes the data, and then sends the data to its intended destination.

It isn't available for NAV 2004 but I just checked and NAV 2002 has it on my son's computer. I know there were reported problems with the May 12 Symantec Redirector LU, maybe this was intended to correct that. This one did not require a reboot whereas the May 12 one did, as I recall. {Erroneous statement stricken}.

OOPs I take that back {faked me out with long delay}: this one also required a reboot. I went back in to son's computer and saw the above.

I didnt have problems with the may 12th update. Im not sure what this update does specifically. I wish Norton would be specific what was modified. I have Norton 2004 pro.

md911: This is supposed to be an updated version for users with Norton 2002. It was to fix the problems with the previous Redirector update from what I was told after I informed the guys about the issues seen in newsgroups, DSLR/BRR forums, others' IMs, etc. I don't know the full details though since I am not in NIS team any more. Hopefully, this patch is good.

I installed it yesterday on NIS 2004. So far hasn't slowed the box any further or caused any additional NIS-related crashing, at least as far as I can tell.

Did anyone with a printserver install this update? I just wanted to be sure it was ok, I still remember the Symantec Redirector update that broke printservers and took months to fix. I guess that was about a year ago or more now at this point.

Well i didnt have any problems with this update. I didnt have any problems last update for this driver. However, I woke up this morning trying to manually update and I get this message saying Live Update needs to be reinstalled. I am hoping windows xp sp 2 works good and I will dump Norton Virus checker and keep the firewall and go with Kaspersky for my virus scanner. I'm trying Sygate firewall pro. its a nice prog.. didnt like mcaffee ..

I am starting to become anti norton.. its a system resource hog (several exe files must run. Norton virus checker shuts off sometimes for no apparent reason. I wish this program was more effcient!

md911 See Profile, this may be due to the Akamai problems: »New Version of ZoneAlarm
quote:
from Sans
It appears that websites that use Akamai's distribution system are currently not reachable. Security related web sites effected are symantec.com and trendmicro.com. Virus updates may fail as a result.
Several others on the Boards are reporting probs with LU today.

Live update is working fine now . I still wish Norton was a resource hog! :0

Norton virus did shut off by itself for no reason. My router has been on for 6 days to this point and received over 1 billion bytes. I don't think that was the problem though

Idiots. Writing incoming data to the hard drive instead of processing in memory. No wonder it's slower!
