New Version of ZoneAlarm

Security software maker Zone Labs updated its desktop firewall on Monday, adding new features that aim to put the kibosh on viruses, the company said.

The antivirus features will be offered in a commercial version of its basic free product, Zone Alarm, and as part of a comprehensive security suite, said Fred Felman, vice president of marketing of Zone Labs, an independent division of security technology company Check Point Software Technologies.

"Many consumers and small business users have asked for a more complete security solution, including antivirus, as well as a great firewall," Felman said. Zone Labs has licensed the antivirus technology from technology service provider Computer Associates International, which typically sells its product, eTrust Antivirus, to small and medium-size businesses. The new additions to its product lines puts Zone Labs in direct competition with the two top players in the home PC security market: Symantec's Norton Internet Security and Network Associates' McAfee Internet Security Suite.

There is a link to CNet/Newscom. However, the link is taking forever to load. The must be some West Coast problem with the Internet, as I can't get Symantec, ZoneLabs to load, or are VERY slow.

Thanks, John. I didn't have a problem getting either of those sites to load. Zone Labs and Symantec also load quickly for me.

If you look on the main page, there has been a problem with those sites hosted by akamai.

from Sans

It appears that websites that use Akamai's distribution system are currently not reachable. Security related web sites effected are symantec.com and trendmicro.com. Virus updates may fail as a result. Further details are currently not available and updates will be posted here as they become available. Thanks to Vidar Wilkens for alerting us of this problem.

Words from Zone Labs:

Today, we're launching version 5.0 of ZoneAlarm, ZoneAlarm Pro, and two new products: ZoneAlarm with Antivirus, and ZoneAlarm Security Suite! The web site is being updated now, and we should begin notifying customers through the "Check for Update" functionality very soon.

We are going to be discontinuing ZoneAlarm Plus and ZoneAlarm Pro with Web Filtering. Of course, we're going to move those customers for free to more powerful products. You can get full details from the "Frequently Asked Questions" links from this page:

We aren't changing anything about the price and availability of ZoneAlarm!

Has anyone done the upgrade yet?

I'm concerned about the anti-virus integration inteferring with KAV. I realize this can be turned off (it can, right?) or rather you download the version without the AV in it.

I keep getting some intermittent True Vector Shutdowns and wonder if they've solved that in this release. No biggie if no one knows.

Thanks for the news.

Garbs,

I posted all the information that I know (at this time). If you run ZAPro now, update it. If you run ZA Free -- ditto. From the words on the site, it appears that the version with just the AV incorporated is ZA Free + AV (and will not be free): »www.zonelabs.com/store/content/c···zaav.jsp

If you now run one of the discontinued projects, follow the link above.

Thanks marti.

I run ZAP, and it appears as though the AV functionality will now come as a part of this upgrade, but it will "alert you when your antivirus protection (even from another vendor) has been disabled or is out of date."

I wonder how much of a pain in the tush this is gonna be because I'm sure that ZoneLabs was able to work with all the major AV companies out there, and test this new version with & against their code so that everything runs flawlessly. [/end sarcasm]

I'm looking forward to the plethora of threads on the net about this. Hehe.

Thanks again marti for the info -- this is just me ranting, forgive me. I look forward to a day when everything will work seemlessly together.

I just have a bad feeling about this. But alas, I have not downloaded anything yet nor installed anything. I will report back with any updates.

Take care.

Garbs,

I don't think an AV program comes with the Pro update. You can of course, turn off functions that you don't want/need.

I agree with you Marti. From what I am reading in the links Zone Labs has not actually added an A/V to ZAP or ZAF for that matter, they have just added a function to alert you when your A/V is not working.

I hope they fixed/improved the privacy part in ZA5 though I doubt they had time to fix the "popup=high cpu usage" bug if they were not aware of it until recently. Also new techniques used by pop ups are now able to get through the protection where in the past they were blocked.

amen to that. and adding urls to the site list is not as powerful nor as final as it used to be. within a day or two, the pop-unders (i get pop-unders) return, as if the url had never been entered.

two sites in particular really cause this behavior for me...

The sites you have listed are minor offenses compared to some of the other sites I seen with pop-ups that are now getting through. But it’s not even so much the poor blocking, it’s the high CPU usage and pauses when certain types of pop ups are used and ZA tries to block them.

If fact the privacy controls in the current state are so poor I was going to have to disable it and select another product like ad-muncher or something similar to shield me from the nuisances.

But hopefully when I get home and test the new version it has improved, though my hopes are not high since the issues listed have been with the privacy feature for many versions. I have hope in the future that they will address this as I sent in a Beta Bug report and contacted IGGY, I am sure he will stress these points to the right people at ZL.

... when I hit 'check for updates' in ZAP it says I'm up to date, but obviously I'm not ... I actually have ZAPro with Web Filtering 4.5.594.000, and it seems they're doing away with that version ... wonder if I'll have to wait, or try the links posted ...

... oh well, no rush ... f w i w ...

well they sure as heck do annoy me trying to successfully block the pop-unders there, so if you say they are minor by comparison, i can only offer you my greatest sympathies.

it's good to know that others are experiencing the same difficulties with zap's ad-blocker. when i first started using this feature, i was stunned by its thoroughness.

and even though i have noted a few instances of pop-unders getting through, overall i would still rate zap's ad-blocking capabilities as above average or better.

i just get the feeling that the ads are starting to sneak in and zap isn't keeping up with the technology.
