Faxing using a DSL line instead of a modem, help

Does anyone know of any software or way to allow DSL users to send and receive faxes over their line without the need of a modem or fax machine?

Surely there's some software that will allow this. Can anyone help?

There are a few web services that can help you out: »www.efax.com (free rates) and »www.Faxaway.com ($1 per month rates). I haven't tried either myself, but they may be worth a look.

edit: pricing isn't exactly as simple as I believed

Faxing Options for DSL or Cable Modems

You can't use your DSL or cable connection for faxing. A new technology, Voice over IP (VoIP) will undoubtedly make this possible in the future. VoIP is an inexpensive alternative to traditional telephone communication that operates over the public switched telephone network (PSTN). VoIP covers computer-to-computer, computer-to-telephone, and telephone-based communications. For more information about VoIP, read the Voice-over-IP Overview and the VoIP FAQ from DLS Reports.

Yea candle is right.
Cable and DSL do not support faxing.
Right now its either through a modem or one of those services. (actually through email I believe)
From what I know of those services, they are not free nor too reliable.
I would say either get a modem of fax machine. Either is not too expensive, the modem cheapest way out I think.

I use an old PII box with winfaxpro as my fax "sever"...it runs 24/7, I can send and recieve fax's (mainly recieve) and I print on my printer which is way better than a fax printer.

For what the cable company charges per month, they should offer FREE faxing through email account, cause i don't see any other worthwile perk in having it at almost $50 a month!!! just had to vent

Check out the following resources:

1. An FAQ entry in faxbeep.com detailing how to send faxes from DSL.

2. A list of internet fax providers on faxbeep.com which should all enable you to send faxes through your DSL line.

Re: Faxing using a DSL line instead of a modem, he

You (if you desire your privacy or handle confidential documents and your customers/partners, prospects, etc also want their privacy preserved) really want a real fax machine or a hardware controller based fax/modem so you can secure the delivery of your faxes. You already have the PC, so you can either get an external (serial port) fax/modem or a internal PCI slot fax/modem. Just make sure the internal is a hardware controller based fax/modem and not a soft-modem or win-modem.

When you fax to the internet instead of over the regular phone line you have with DSL and POTS service, you end up with your information in the hands of people you do not know and they may use or divert your faxes and any information they contain for their personal use.

Regular POTS fax/modems and fax machines do work over VOIP so you can save money if you need to fax over long distances and do not want high monthly fees from a regular POTS long distance provider.
