Using BitComet, only set to no limit on DL rate and 50 on upload rate, nothing else change. Didn't touch anything about port (either router or program) since it config the port itself (UPnP)..

| Re: switched to EXTREME now torrents are SLOW!>?!? so here is the verdict....
late last night, i disconnected my router, and used my 100mb switch and the cable modem direct...and poof.
i started downloading 2 torrents at about 300-460k....
its wierd, during the day when i first got the modem it wouldnt download more than 20k, i called rogers, and complained, then hooked it up direct later that evening and all is well now.
i have an old smc 7004awbr router, that doesnt let me port forward a range of IP, but this was never a problem with my old terayon, i got 150k using that. But new modem, needs a better router i guess, that or something else.
But for now, a direct connection to the modem even through my switch works great, and VERY FAST.
so Im VERY happy at this point. But im not sure why it didnt work straight away yesterday, even after plugging it in direct.
regardless it works now.
THANKS to EVERYONE for their help.
esp. cyboy and budda.

1 edit | Here is my suggestion
go to s*uprnova go to the apps/linux section and download
Fedora 2 I386 CDS
that t*rrent is always seeded VERY well, i usually get 300-600k on this dl. It is a good one to TEST your connection with if you have any doubt.
As for client, ive tried SO MANY...the one i use is azureus. Yes it uses java and is cpu intensive, but if you have a fast computer, this shouldnt be too much of a problem, as it has the BEST performance IMO.
make sure to put in your local ip in the bind to address in the config, and set the tracker external ip address (let it auto detect) in the config of the program.
I hope this helps.
BTW: some torrents just dont go that fast....you have to get a really well seeded one to achieve really great speeds.

| I am on Extreme since May 14, 2004.
The speeds were awesome. I could easily download 10 torrents simultaneously + eMule with great total speeds - ~600/80 kB/s. »raccess.ca/torrentspeed.JPG
Since about few days ago I started to experience slow connection when using torrent or eMule. If I close them both and check my speed using online speed tests or FTP download/upload the speed will be great as before. But as soon as I open torrent or eMule upload speed never gets above 20 kBs. More over, web surfing gets very slow. It looks like Computer, modem or ISP limits the maximum number of simultaneously open connections.
Tech. detailes: My computer is connected directly to the WebStar DPX2100 modem with no soft or hardware firewalls or routers at all. Also, I didnt install or change configuration of the software during those two weeks. The only thing I did is I upgraded Azureus. Tried to go back to old version did not help. More over, eMule (with out torrent) does not upload much also. I tried to change eMule & torrent ports many times didnt help.
Modems specs Software version: 2.0.1r1131-0304 Downstream: Power level 1.1 dBmV; Signal to Noise Ratio 38.3 dB Upstream: Power level - 47.0 dBmV
My question is Can ISP limit the number of simultaneously open connections?

Well-seeded torrents often DL at under 10k speeds, and most uploads will not go over 2k, even though there are several "leechers" connected, and my max UL speed in Azureus is 50k. This is just since I got Extreme yesterday. I changed no settings on my SMC Barricade 700VBR router (which forwards ports 6881-6999 to my PC), and I got better speeds with my old Teryon with regular service. | I'm not on Extreme Yet, but here is something that I did to increase dl speeds. Open msconfig, under Startup Shut down all programs, then go to services, and shut down anything that isnt needed and that wont crash the computer. I shut down my anti Virus and firewall, Seems the firewall makes a big impact on the connection. Restart the comp and run your Torrent client. Basically you need to free up as much memory as possible. When I'm dl my availiable memory goes from 350k to 40. I use TorrentStorm, I went from dl speeds of 60k/sec to 250/ksec. Oh ya dont have too many dl at once, and change the dl settings to Pre-allocate instead of background. This will us most of your system resorces so its a good plan to do if you can just leave the comp till its done downloading. Hope this helped, GL.

| Guys check this link out, this may answer as to why you're getting slow speeds with your new high speed extreme: »www.filelist.org/blacklist.php
the main line you should look at is: "The reason for this is that it is a common practice for ISPs to throttle those ports which means that bandwidth is limited and the speed suffers."
After subscribing to extreme highspeed, the settings that apply to you may also be port throttling settings they have in place. Try changing the "Incoming TCP listen port" to something like 49500, i could help.

1 edit | if 40 KB/s is your max upload speed, then that may be your problem right there. When you're surfing the web, and you click on a page, you're sending (uploading) a request to view that page and then they send you the appropriate info to view their page. This is constantly going on if you're a quick surfer. So if you're uploading at your max, then of course page loading slows to a crawl, the webpage you're trying to get to hasnt gotten your request yet! same with msn, it might think you've timed out because msn hasnt reported back to their servers in x time like it was supposed to, so they disconnect. So if you dont wanna upload at your max, either get a third-party program like netlimiter or if you're bittorrenting, get azureus, you can limit your global upload for torrents. Hope that helps.

| you know what roboninja, I really don't think you can do anything about your bad speeds. Even well seeded torrents could have slow DL rates (122 seeds 8 peers) because you never know whether or not those 122 peers are seeding OTHER torrents at the same time. Since you've been able to get 300 KB/s, I think its safe to say that everything is fine on your end, theres nothing wrong. | |

join:2004-01-23 Ottawa | Using the BitTorrent technology it is alsmot impossible to get 5 KB/s on a torrent with 130 peers (122 seeders and 8 downloaders), unless a port is blocked or there is some bottleneck (on your end or Rogers').

| Re: switched to EXTREME now torrents are SLOW!>?!? Well, I got my new D-Link router, and no change The fact that most torrents are horrendously slow is not the only problem. When I have 3-4 torrents going, my total speeds are around 5-20 kB up, and 5-20 kB down. So, there should be lots of bandwidth left. But, if I try to surf with this going on, I get ridiculously slow speeds, DNS resolution timeouts, etc. If I try a speed test without bittorrent running, I get good speeds (575/75). Let bittorrent run, with only the small amount of bandwidth used up as mentioned above (around 5-20 kB up, and 5-20 kB down), the speed test gives me 65/8!!! This is unacceptable. I am going to call Rogers tomorrow and see if I can get this cleared up. | |

| This solution applies to all those using the newest versions of Azureus who are experiencing slow upload speeds, but normal download speeds.
a) Set the option to unlimited upload in the configuration. b) Get a 3rd party bandwidth limiter such as 'Netlimiter'.
Voila! Your upload speed should raise immediately. I had this problem for a few months until I realized that Azureus has a bug in their global upload cap feature.
I even tested it. On seeding the same torrent, my upload speed shot from 10kB/s to 60 kB/s! But as soon as I let AZ cap my total upload speed again (at 55), *plunk* back down to 10kB/s.
Hope this helps for some of you AZ users.

2 edits | I called Rogers about a week ago about my hi-speed extreme problems with uploading and downloading at the same time (ie. bittorrent and hosting xbox live games), they said they'd look into it. I called em today and it ends up they just closed the ticket saying there's nothing wrong with my connection.
Note that the same day with normal hi-speed, I didn't have any of these problems, it's BLATENTLY the new extreme service's problem!
It's definately not an easy problem to see, but usually any upload over 10kBps will stall all downloads for seconds at a time - that's why I can join xbox games, but can't host (and it ain't a firewall prob, they connect fine and we get right into the game where it stalls, it worked with normal hi-speed).
I'm gonna see if Rogers carries any other modems, if not I'm just gonna move back to normal hi-speed.

| I am having the same problem, once ABC starts uploading and downloading even at very low speeds my internet goes to a halt, I can't even log into MSN anymore, times out giving me errors. If I have torrents running on one pc my second pc does not have any bandwith left either.
I just downloaded another client, im going to give that a try.

| I have the exact same problem. I upgraded to extreme last Friday. Before the upgrade on the very same day I had no problems getting the full 40K upload and 100K+ download simultaneously. Now as soon as I use the connection in a bi-directional manner (i.e: bittorent) it all goes to hell, massive packet loss and very slow throughput (10K/s tops).
I looked at my modem diagnostics, its happy, SNR is all good, no errors in the logs. In fact my signal is fantastic. Doing a uni-directional transfer is perfect, 500+K/s down and 90+ up its just the bi-directional traffic that causes fits.
I tried connecting the modem directly to my PC as suggested by people in this thread. (I was using an old SMC router) This didnt make any difference on either of my ethernet ports. (built in 3Com gigabit and intel 10/100 pro card)
So in short:
- doesent appear to be a modem problem - doesent appear to be a signal strength or RF problem - doesent appear to be a physical layer ethernet/hardware problem
So I can only surmize that its:
- software - routing
The only other things I can think to try right now:
- try using bittroent on my linux box, different tcp stack may make a difference - try altering my TCP settings (RWIN etc) in XP (related to the above) - bust out etherpeek and sniff my CPE side traffic to look for abnormalities
Im pretty sure its software. If not it can only be routing.
If none of this works I will have to call Rogers because but im not expecting much if anything. Maybe if I tell them I test the DOCSIS spec for a major modem/CMTS manufacturer (this is my actual job) they might put me through to level 3 guy with access to the routers but fat chance.

| Re: switched to EXTREME now torrents are SLOW!>?!? Ok I spent a couple hours fooling with it last night.
I have determined it is NOT a rogers problem. While I experience massive loss and TCP stalls on the CPE side with bittorent running you can still ping the modem from an extrenal site with no loss and low latency. In short it looks like both the RF and routing are good.
Thus the problem lies between my PC and the modem.
Which leaves:
TCP Stack hardware level ethernet incompatibility dud modem/bad hardware
Im leaning towards the ethernet problem as I messed with my TCP settings by altering the RWIN up and down but that had little effect.
Im going to look up the SB5100 tech support page or perhaps call Motorola and see if they are aware of any issues related to ethernet incompatibilities.

| Re: switched to EXTREME now torrents are SLOW!>?!? Allright. My troubles continue.
I exchanged the modem yesterday for a different SB5100 in the hopes it was just a dud piece of hardware. No dice. Exact same problem with bi-directional traffic causing massive loss and stalls.
So then I figured I would try a new router so I picked up a WRT54G since a) people seem to have alot of success for it b) the source code is GPL and there are lots of nice modified firmwares for it c) I want to hopefully setup a wireless network with my buddies on the same side of the building on 11th and 4th floors (im on 7) d) it was on sale for $90
Anyhow get it home, set it up, still have huge problems with bi-directional traffic. LAter I tried plugging the modem straight into the linux box so its not just a windows thing. Boo.
Today im going to contact Motorola broadband support and see if they are aware of any issues and after that I am basically fresh out of ideas. In the meantime however can people with the extreme service, SB5100 and working bittorent post up thier firmware revisions for me?
Mine is:
Software Version: SB5100-2.3.1.3-SCM00-NOSH Hardware Version: 3 MIB Version: II GUI Version: 1.0 VxWorks Version: 5.4

| Re: switched to EXTREME now torrents are SLOW!>?!? I called up Motorola broadband tech support and asked them if they knew of any incompatibilies between the SB5100 ethernet chipset and others or if there were any known issues with the internal bridge and bi-directional traffic. No known issues.
So if its not an ethernet problem, (seems unlikely as I have tried about 5 different ethernet cards/chips) not an internal bridge problem (also unlikely as there are people for whom it works properly and im guessing most people have the same firmware as me) yet the RF is OK it MUST be routing /router config or CMTS configuration.
Does know a way to get straight to level 2 or 3 tech support at Rogers?
