| so here is the verdict....
late last night, i disconnected my router, and used my 100mb switch and the cable modem direct...and poof.
i started downloading 2 torrents at about 300-460k....
its wierd, during the day when i first got the modem it wouldnt download more than 20k, i called rogers, and complained, then hooked it up direct later that evening and all is well now.
i have an old smc 7004awbr router, that doesnt let me port forward a range of IP, but this was never a problem with my old terayon, i got 150k using that. But new modem, needs a better router i guess, that or something else.
But for now, a direct connection to the modem even through my switch works great, and VERY FAST.
so Im VERY happy at this point. But im not sure why it didnt work straight away yesterday, even after plugging it in direct.
regardless it works now.
THANKS to EVERYONE for their help.
esp. cyboy and budda.
peace |

| now im having trouble, I cant go faster than 100KBytes per sec. The fastest I got is 77KBytes, used to get 150+ everytime I download this type of torrent.
I tried downloading a file from m$ , its a media player installation file, I got ~ 600KBytes.
Im using a motorola sb5100, no router, direct connection, Im using the usb connected to the usb 2.0 pci card.
help please... TY |

1 edit | reply to buddha2oo4 Here is my suggestion
go to s*uprnova go to the apps/linux section and download
Fedora 2 I386 CDS
that t*rrent is always seeded VERY well, i usually get 300-600k on this dl. It is a good one to TEST your connection with if you have any doubt.
As for client, ive tried SO MANY...the one i use is azureus. Yes it uses java and is cpu intensive, but if you have a fast computer, this shouldnt be too much of a problem, as it has the BEST performance IMO.
make sure to put in your local ip in the bind to address in the config, and set the tracker external ip address (let it auto detect) in the config of the program.
I hope this helps.
BTW: some torrents just dont go that fast....you have to get a really well seeded one to achieve really great speeds. |

1 edit | reply to vybe232 Since iv gotten EHS my torrent downloading hasnt been the same. When i had just the plain jane high speed i could download at my maximum throughput (300 kb/s or so) and still be able to upload at 20 kb/s or so without any degredation in quality. Now i cant even get 150 kb/s or even a steady 10 kb/s upload.
FYI i use Bittornado. |

| reply to TJDM i got a BEFSR41+SB5100 and now torrents soooo slow...if i d/l from irc like a 300 mb avi..i get like over 3.5~4 MB/s (depending how fast the XDCC servers are) but torrents donn even go past 10KB/s and even if i set the upload to like 60KB/s it doesn't even go up to that..just stays at like 15KB/s..i donn think its the router prob..since i had the the teryon hooked up earlier and torrents speeds were fast..all port forwarding setting and same as i had it earlier...what's wrong..hmmm..sigh |

| don't quote me on this, but it seems like the new modems don't work so great with some routers. I don't think it can be compared with the Terayon since they're of a different standard and are newer.
Also, i had the 15k cap when uploading to BT a few days ago, but a restart on my modem solved the issue. Try restarting both your modem as well as your router to see if it helps any |

| reply to vybe232 I am on Extreme since May 14, 2004.
The speeds were awesome. I could easily download 10 torrents simultaneously + eMule with great total speeds - ~600/80 kB/s. »raccess.ca/torrentspeed.JPG
Since about few days ago I started to experience slow connection when using torrent or eMule. If I close them both and check my speed using online speed tests or FTP download/upload the speed will be great as before. But as soon as I open torrent or eMule upload speed never gets above 20 kBs. More over, web surfing gets very slow. It looks like Computer, modem or ISP limits the maximum number of simultaneously open connections.
Tech. detailes: My computer is connected directly to the WebStar DPX2100 modem with no soft or hardware firewalls or routers at all. Also, I didnt install or change configuration of the software during those two weeks. The only thing I did is I upgraded Azureus. Tried to go back to old version did not help. More over, eMule (with out torrent) does not upload much also. I tried to change eMule & torrent ports many times didnt help.
Modems specs Software version: 2.0.1r1131-0304 Downstream: Power level 1.1 dBmV; Signal to Noise Ratio 38.3 dB Upstream: Power level - 47.0 dBmV
My question is Can ISP limit the number of simultaneously open connections?

sbrook Premium,Mod join:2001-12-14 H0H 0H0 | No because there is no technical concept outside your computer of an open connection. To Rogers, they are just packets.
BUT beware if you start uploading, your download will slow down. |
