@cable.rogers
| reply to sbrook thankx, the problem is that my upload limit is between 80-100 kBs and I am able to upload on that speed for a long time (FTP, or WEB-server). BUT, when I use Azureus (bittorrent) or eMule - my upload does not go above 20-25 kBps. It did before. I'll call Rogers tomorrow. |

| reply to vybe232 I am having the same probs. Well-seeded torrents often DL at under 10k speeds, and most uploads will not go over 2k, even though there are several "leechers" connected, and my max UL speed in Azureus is 50k. This is just since I got Extreme yesterday. I changed no settings on my SMC Barricade 700VBR router (which forwards ports 6881-6999 to my PC), and I got better speeds with my old Teryon with regular service. Is Rogers limiting speeds on BitTorrent ports? Maybe I should change it to use non-standard ports... |

| reply to vybe232 I'm not on Extreme Yet, but here is something that I did to increase dl speeds. Open msconfig, under Startup Shut down all programs, then go to services, and shut down anything that isnt needed and that wont crash the computer. I shut down my anti Virus and firewall, Seems the firewall makes a big impact on the connection. Restart the comp and run your Torrent client. Basically you need to free up as much memory as possible. When I'm dl my availiable memory goes from 350k to 40. I use TorrentStorm, I went from dl speeds of 60k/sec to 250/ksec. Oh ya dont have too many dl at once, and change the dl settings to Pre-allocate instead of background. This will us most of your system resorces so its a good plan to do if you can just leave the comp till its done downloading. Hope this helped, GL. |

| reply to roboninja hey ninja
it looks as if some SMC routers dont do very well with the MOTO surfboard modems.
Once i disconnected my SMC router everything works fine.
Ill be buying a new router.
older SMC routers are the problem to slow torrent speeds, mine was a 7004AWBR.
took a while to narrow down, but that was my issue. |

| reply to Starling My problem with slow uploads has been resolved. It was on Rogers side. I called Rogers about 4-5 days ago and spoke to 1st level tech. support. He went through some basic stuff with me (resets, speed tests,
) to determine where was the problem. He noted all my complains and said he would pass it to the 2nd level tech. support. Next 2 days I was getting calls from Rogers automotive caller to get notified that the problem is being worked on and has not been resolved yet. Last night I noted that my torrents upload speed went up. It is all back to normal. 5mbps down and 800kbps up.
btw I leave on South End of Ottawa. |

| reply to vybe232 Guys check this link out, this may answer as to why you're getting slow speeds with your new high speed extreme: »www.filelist.org/blacklist.php
the main line you should look at is: "The reason for this is that it is a common practice for ISPs to throttle those ports which means that bandwidth is limited and the speed suffers."
After subscribing to extreme highspeed, the settings that apply to you may also be port throttling settings they have in place. Try changing the "Incoming TCP listen port" to something like 49500, i could help. |

1 edit | reply to vybe232 if 40 KB/s is your max upload speed, then that may be your problem right there. When you're surfing the web, and you click on a page, you're sending (uploading) a request to view that page and then they send you the appropriate info to view their page. This is constantly going on if you're a quick surfer. So if you're uploading at your max, then of course page loading slows to a crawl, the webpage you're trying to get to hasnt gotten your request yet! same with msn, it might think you've timed out because msn hasnt reported back to their servers in x time like it was supposed to, so they disconnect. So if you dont wanna upload at your max, either get a third-party program like netlimiter or if you're bittorrenting, get azureus, you can limit your global upload for torrents. Hope that helps. |

Marcif, I had exactly the same problem. I tried different ports (80,83,400,10000,63049, 64039 etc). It did not help. The problem was solved by Rogers and I can now upload my torrent with 50kBps and still be able to serf with out delays or ICQ/MSN disconnections. Read my posts above.
Read this tread. I believe it applies to me. »Ottawa's back in business fellahs!!! |

Yes, it could also be solved by Rogers, who knows, you could have a bad signal coming into your modem. Give them a call, see what they say. |

| reply to TeeJayDM I have the Moto SB5100 modem. I have tried a high port (49123), but that did not do anything. It is weird, because the odd torrent will do fine (a 300kB/s DL rate), but 95% of torrent hover around 1-5 kB/s for 95% of the time. Even torrents that are well seeded (122 seeds, 8 peers, and 1-5 kB/s??). I will try to call Rogers tech tomorrow, but if nothing gets resolved, I may take the advice of vybe232 and get a new router, as I do indeed have an old SMC VBR Barricade. |

| Other than lots of complaints that Rogers port throttles, Rogers has in the past denied that they port throttled, and many of the speed issues have been resolved as other problems. As noted changing ports to non-standard ports doesn't even seem to solve the problem. |

| reply to vybe232 you know what roboninja, I really don't think you can do anything about your bad speeds. Even well seeded torrents could have slow DL rates (122 seeds 8 peers) because you never know whether or not those 122 peers are seeding OTHER torrents at the same time. Since you've been able to get 300 KB/s, I think its safe to say that everything is fine on your end, theres nothing wrong. |

join:2004-01-23 Ottawa | reply to vybe232 Using the BitTorrent technology it is alsmot impossible to get 5 KB/s on a torrent with 130 peers (122 seeders and 8 downloaders), unless a port is blocked or there is some bottleneck (on your end or Rogers'). |

| reply to vybe232 I have the exact same problem with bittorrent, and also anywhere that I upload/download at the same time is slow, including xbox live. I'm not behind a router.
I tried downloading a linux ISO while uploading through FTP, the download COMPLETELY halts while the uploading takes place.
I'm in Ottawa West (Kanata).
I just called Rogers, I'll update you guys if this gets sorted out. |

| Well, I got my new D-Link router, and no change The fact that most torrents are horrendously slow is not the only problem. When I have 3-4 torrents going, my total speeds are around 5-20 kB up, and 5-20 kB down. So, there should be lots of bandwidth left. But, if I try to surf with this going on, I get ridiculously slow speeds, DNS resolution timeouts, etc. If I try a speed test without bittorrent running, I get good speeds (575/75). Let bittorrent run, with only the small amount of bandwidth used up as mentioned above (around 5-20 kB up, and 5-20 kB down), the speed test gives me 65/8!!! This is unacceptable. I am going to call Rogers tomorrow and see if I can get this cleared up. |
