If you run a normal speed test and get good results Rogers isn't going to do anything for you. I am on Rogers Extreme and get good speeds on most torrents. Usually 300KB/s + some are slower but most download quite well. I'm using a Linksys Wrt54g with a modified firmware. |

To me; i've noticed that a LOT of torrents DO struggle .. but you gotta find torrents that are heavily seeded to get sufficient speeds. (it's like the protocol has changed a bit in the last few months because i still get good speeds on certain torrents).
Just a thought ..

| reply to vybe232 This solution applies to all those using the newest versions of Azureus who are experiencing slow upload speeds, but normal download speeds.
a) Set the option to unlimited upload in the configuration. b) Get a 3rd party bandwidth limiter such as 'Netlimiter'.
Voila! Your upload speed should raise immediately. I had this problem for a few months until I realized that Azureus has a bug in their global upload cap feature.
I even tested it. On seeding the same torrent, my upload speed shot from 10kB/s to 60 kB/s! But as soon as I let AZ cap my total upload speed again (at 55), *plunk* back down to 10kB/s.
Hope this helps for some of you AZ users. |

2 edits | reply to vybe232 I called Rogers about a week ago about my hi-speed extreme problems with uploading and downloading at the same time (ie. bittorrent and hosting xbox live games), they said they'd look into it. I called em today and it ends up they just closed the ticket saying there's nothing wrong with my connection.
Note that the same day with normal hi-speed, I didn't have any of these problems, it's BLATENTLY the new extreme service's problem!
It's definately not an easy problem to see, but usually any upload over 10kBps will stall all downloads for seconds at a time - that's why I can join xbox games, but can't host (and it ain't a firewall prob, they connect fine and we get right into the game where it stalls, it worked with normal hi-speed).
I'm gonna see if Rogers carries any other modems, if not I'm just gonna move back to normal hi-speed. |

join:2003-08-12 | reply to methodm This seems to be the issue with ABC as well.... As soon as i set the upload limit in the program (to 80k/s), it would plop back down to around 15k/s
however, if i set it to unlimited, my upload speeds would be at max |

| reply to vybe232 I am having the same problem, once ABC starts uploading and downloading even at very low speeds my internet goes to a halt, I can't even log into MSN anymore, times out giving me errors. If I have torrents running on one pc my second pc does not have any bandwith left either.
I just downloaded another client, im going to give that a try. |

| reply to Frankii I have the exact same problem. I upgraded to extreme last Friday. Before the upgrade on the very same day I had no problems getting the full 40K upload and 100K+ download simultaneously. Now as soon as I use the connection in a bi-directional manner (i.e: bittorent) it all goes to hell, massive packet loss and very slow throughput (10K/s tops).
I looked at my modem diagnostics, its happy, SNR is all good, no errors in the logs. In fact my signal is fantastic. Doing a uni-directional transfer is perfect, 500+K/s down and 90+ up its just the bi-directional traffic that causes fits.
I tried connecting the modem directly to my PC as suggested by people in this thread. (I was using an old SMC router) This didnt make any difference on either of my ethernet ports. (built in 3Com gigabit and intel 10/100 pro card)
So in short:
- doesent appear to be a modem problem - doesent appear to be a signal strength or RF problem - doesent appear to be a physical layer ethernet/hardware problem
So I can only surmize that its:
- software - routing
The only other things I can think to try right now:
- try using bittroent on my linux box, different tcp stack may make a difference - try altering my TCP settings (RWIN etc) in XP (related to the above) - bust out etherpeek and sniff my CPE side traffic to look for abnormalities
Im pretty sure its software. If not it can only be routing.
If none of this works I will have to call Rogers because but im not expecting much if anything. Maybe if I tell them I test the DOCSIS spec for a major modem/CMTS manufacturer (this is my actual job) they might put me through to level 3 guy with access to the routers but fat chance. |

| reply to vybe232 Switched to extreme myself after I was stuck back on a teryon from a 3mbps doxis performance. My conn died and they switched modem on me and screwed 300kbps downloads down to 150.
My current torrent as i write this is @140 down 80 up - 14 peers/22 seeds - way good if you ask me.
My downloads are at 560kbps to 600kbps - just downloaded VSSP6 from MS in seconds.
Overall - I am extremely happy with my extreme - for now - 4 days consistent performance.
I know this is not read often in comparison to complaints and a complaint is why I switched but I thought give credit where credit is due. In the meantime I'll be watching it once bitten... |

  torrents are da bomb
@cable.rogers | reply to buddha2oo4 torrents depend on people that are sharing that file. if there are no seeds then it wont go fast |

| reply to ChrisFF Ok I spent a couple hours fooling with it last night.
I have determined it is NOT a rogers problem. While I experience massive loss and TCP stalls on the CPE side with bittorent running you can still ping the modem from an extrenal site with no loss and low latency. In short it looks like both the RF and routing are good.
Thus the problem lies between my PC and the modem.
Which leaves:
TCP Stack hardware level ethernet incompatibility dud modem/bad hardware
Im leaning towards the ethernet problem as I messed with my TCP settings by altering the RWIN up and down but that had little effect.
Im going to look up the SB5100 tech support page or perhaps call Motorola and see if they are aware of any issues related to ethernet incompatibilities. |

@cable.rogers
| Allright. My troubles continue.
I exchanged the modem yesterday for a different SB5100 in the hopes it was just a dud piece of hardware. No dice. Exact same problem with bi-directional traffic causing massive loss and stalls.
So then I figured I would try a new router so I picked up a WRT54G since a) people seem to have alot of success for it b) the source code is GPL and there are lots of nice modified firmwares for it c) I want to hopefully setup a wireless network with my buddies on the same side of the building on 11th and 4th floors (im on 7) d) it was on sale for $90
Anyhow get it home, set it up, still have huge problems with bi-directional traffic. LAter I tried plugging the modem straight into the linux box so its not just a windows thing. Boo.
Today im going to contact Motorola broadband support and see if they are aware of any issues and after that I am basically fresh out of ideas. In the meantime however can people with the extreme service, SB5100 and working bittorent post up thier firmware revisions for me?
Mine is:
Software Version: SB5100-2.3.1.3-SCM00-NOSH Hardware Version: 3 MIB Version: II GUI Version: 1.0 VxWorks Version: 5.4
Thanks |

@cable.rogers
| I called up Motorola broadband tech support and asked them if they knew of any incompatibilies between the SB5100 ethernet chipset and others or if there were any known issues with the internal bridge and bi-directional traffic. No known issues.
So if its not an ethernet problem, (seems unlikely as I have tried about 5 different ethernet cards/chips) not an internal bridge problem (also unlikely as there are people for whom it works properly and im guessing most people have the same firmware as me) yet the RF is OK it MUST be routing /router config or CMTS configuration.
Does know a way to get straight to level 2 or 3 tech support at Rogers? |

Its getting to be a pain, each time i leave my torrent on, my roommates complaine that they cant chat on MSN and surf and stuff. And my trafic is only like 10k down and 20k up |

@cable.rogers
| I fixed it. Youre not going to like the fix though.
The problem was the SB5100 itself. Im not going to go into detail but I guess there IS a problem in thier bridge for certain circumstances and modulation profiles. Im going to write thier tech support guys a note detailing it and if they get back to me ill help them debug it.
I replaced the SB5100 with a modem containing a custom firmware with the MAC hardcoded equal to my SB100. After switching to the new modem everything worked perfectly. I guess having 75% of the global market share doesent neccesarily mean you have the best product. Multiple upstream TCP connections no longer caused severe degradation. I had some torrents going at a sum of 500K/s down and 80K/s upstream simultaneously (needed to leave a bit of upstream headroom for ACKs) while still maintaining 50-120ms ping latency to a site that would see 40-60ms under unloaded conditions.
Obviously, my solution wont work for you so I suggest you try the following:
a) get a different modem, the Webstar or Toshiba (if you shedule a tech to come visit you they should be able to do this) b) get Rogers to change the firmware on your modem (good luck with this) c) get DSL |

| Thanks ChrisFF, with all the things I tried, thats the only one I couldn't. (due to me not having another modem)
ChrisFF, do you think there is just a few people that are having this problem? Wouldn't we hear more about it if it was a general problem? Could it just be the firmware on our modem that is doing this?
Well, anyways, im going to go surf the net if anyone is getting the same problem. Maybe someone came out with a way to update the firmware on this POS

| reply to vybe232 Couple things I just found out that may help you guys.
First...Turn off UPNP on your application.
Second...Change your Torrent Ports. It looks like Rogers is doing something to Limit Torrents. I changed my Torrent ports to 56881-56889 and Whammo...My Speeds where Way Faster. |
