 | Anyone Get 3.0/768 Yet? According to Verizon Tech, the 3.0MB/768k is already out in a trial status!!! They are sending e-mails out to SOME customers who qualify (starting today). They are supposedly going to trial the service for about 30 days. Anyone get information (price? availability? lengths?) Thanks! |

HTH! |

 | about a 11k loop on that one doesn't look good though but it might still hold up |

|
 | It's just a trial right now as stated above. There are no set loops on this yet can't see why they couldn't push the 768 upload to at least 12k. Not sure how far the 3m will go. 7.1 up to 8k and 1.6 out to 15k+. I would assume they will at least go to 10k with it. In trial now up to 11k but it's not available widely yet. |

 | reply to edelite Do I smell FUD?
Come on now 3Mbits is no big deal. Why run a trial? Every line out there is different so what's this "trial" supposed to prove?
VOL is more worried about the effects to the backbone when all use bandwidth hungry VOL'ers get our hands on it than the effects to some "select" employees' lines.
Did you folks stop and think what you are writing before you hit the "post now" button?
I know for a fact that the new tier is no problemo for my line. Does that mean I get in on the "secret trial". Yup as soon as I fork over whatever VOL charges for the 3Mbit tier when VOL feels the backbone can handle it. |
|
 | Unfortunately, they did not determine some of the most crucial aspects of this new tier (which will be determined in the trial).... such as Loop Length and Price! I'm on the borderline on the loop thing too (which is freaking me out) heh heh heh... |

What???? Loop Length is a physics problem. VOL doesn't need to go handing out trial accounts to tell them what their test equipment already knows.
FYI I just received a new Westel 2200 which Dave Henkel a VOL employee is all hot to trot about because it does extend practical loop length. It replaced my circa '99 BA Infospeed museum piece which was on it's last lap. Now there's some facts right from the horse's mouth (sorry Dave ) that you can dream about. If you are doing OK with an older model then you should be very optimistic about qualifying for the new speed with a 2200. |
|
 | Loop Length is indeed limited by physics, but they have to also consider the average condition of lines. If they just based everything on physics, people up to 18k would be getting 1.5/384k! Unfortunately, that isn't the case :-( |

I never said I was "hot to trot" about the 2200. I just said that this is the first ADSL modem that can overcome certain loop conditions to improve service. BTW, I am not a VOL employee, I work for the core VZ company... |

 | Hmm. Sorry for my own euphemism. You were pretty excited.
Shall I cut and paste the thread from the 0.verizon NG Dave?
So I ask you are these 3Mbit "tests" some new employee perk? You have already admitted to having a 7.1Mbit line if I recall correctly.
If these tests are running on the old infrastructure in The Big Apple that makes more sense. BA inherited that rats nest did little to make it data ready. All one has to do is to look back a few years in this forum to the NYC bitchathon to prove that point. I know VZ has been pouring beacoup $$ into upgrades. Is it time for the shakedown voyage?
I still contend that these "trials" prove nothing more than the test equipment already tells you.
Think I am a VOL basher Dave? Nothing could be further from the truth. For example:

BTW I am hot to trot about my new 2200. The old "white" Westel never really had any problem until late, but 5 years is a long time technologically. Time to dump my equally old Linky BEFSR-41 V.1 as well. |

2. The current 3/768 trial is not an employee 'perk'. There will be a more extensive customer trial soon.
3. Yes, I have a 7.1 line since I am close enough to my CO to get it.
4. The trial is not limited to NYC. And I take offense to your point about the 'rats nest' since I live here and used to work in the OSP (I have a bit more experience in this area than you do)....And the bitching in these forums had more to do with VOL's network and backbone issues than the physical OSP.
5. These trials prove much more than just testing the 'test equipment'. They help determine how well a new speed tier works in the real world with paying customers.
6. I never said you were a VOL basher.
7. I am really happy that you like the Westell 2200....Keep your eyes on their new 6100-series of modems:

 | so so?
What do you mean by that?
Comparing it to the 1.5/384 service I would imagine it to be VERY good if not great!
One thing that really ticks me off though about Verizon and their residential service is that you can't buy more than one IP. That's screwed up. |

I don't think you can buy static ip at all.
Static IP is only available with Business DSL service from VOL. |
|
 | I was referring to at least an extra dynamic at least. Comcast lets you buy more dynamic IP's for something like 4.95/month per IP. Which is not bad, considering it does not permit you more bandwidth or anything like that. Just another publicly addressable IP.
I was told by the Verizon tech that you could attach these new DSL modems to a switch and not have to use any kind of PPoE client on your machine and simply get connected. Is this true from what you have seen? If so, then I might be willing to switch over from Comcast to Verizon when the 3000/768 goes live. |
|
 | reply to edelite You can connect the modem to a ROUTER (which should have PPPoE functionality built in) and not log in. The newer models (2200) have PPPoE & a router built in... so there is no need for buying a switch/router/hub. You just plug in a computer/Wireless Access Point/etc there and your ready! |

When they start customer testing it how would one get put on the test? (Hey, it doesn't hurt to ask right?) I'm sure we wouldn't get anywhere by calling and asking billing. Unless that's something that's only being done in NYC. |

This is correct. VZ explictly supports multiple machines behind a NAT gateway like the new Westell 2200s. You can attach a switch or a router to the Westell to expand the number of ports. |

 | reply to edelite Last night I called about the seeing if I could cancel my land line and use either VoIP or a cell phone and both were a negative.
But I also asked about the 3/768 tier. They lady knew about it and even said they were giving it out to some customers right now as we speak. She checked to see if I was eligible to get the upgrade but said I wasn't. I'm not sure why I wouldn't be as I'm 2000ft from the CO according to them and already have the 1.5/384 tier. It could depend on where you live where it is available I don't really know I will call back later and see as last upgrade to 384 up I got 3 different responses. 1st call no such thing as an upgrade. 2nd call there is an upgrade but you can't get it. 3rd call yes you can get it your really close to the CO!!! and received it a few hours later. HAHA oh well VOL reps are crazy. |
