Re: Will this work when using a third party ISP?

"Unfortunately, VZ's DSL service doesn't meet my needs so I use SpeakEasy/Covad. If I want to drop my VZ POTS, think they'll let me keep my SE/Covad ADSL signal over those lines?
I'm thinking...no."

hi kool moe,

think again and think yes.

i have had pots (local and ld) and adsl from a '3rd party' clec for almost a year and a half. i never had vz dsl, but had their pots only. after they laid me off and i went to work for their competition (a clec), i had my employer's pots and dsl installed on the same copper loop that formerly had my vz pots only.
the clec's dsl and local pots is free (an employee perk), every month. a $70 value, every month. even when i worked for vz, they would not give their own employees much of a break on dsl. they would give you $5 off their monthly price. and you didn't get free local calls either. you were lucky to get a small concession on that.

find a clec in your area and get the clec's pots and dsl. vz has to give the clec access to their loop; otherwise vz could not sell long distance service.

just like gene hackmen said to danzel williams in the sub movie 'crimson tide', when they were discussing nuke warfare...

"... yes sir, drop that fucker, twice..."

so there ya go drop vz twice; dsl and pots. they're not the only game in town anymore.

Thanks. But are you also saying that VZ will let me keep an ADSL signal ONLY from a CLEC over a naked pair...a pair without pots?
Yeah, I could ditch VZ entirely and go with a CLEC for DSL *and* phone service. But I have a year contract with SpeakEasy and like their service. Speakeasy does not offer pots service. I can't keep their DSL service without VZ's pots service - at least, as far as I know. There are certainly plenty of reports of folks who switch to a CLEC pots carrier and lose their DSL service from any but that CLEC.

Cavalier is slowly making its way up here. I think Allegiance is around here too. But until I can combine the pots CLEC I want with the DSL CLEC I want, I'm stickin' with what I gots.

Congrats though on your perks! I'm envious

hi moe,

i can tell you, as a field service tech for the clec i work for, we install lots of 'dsl only'/naked dsl.

what you're saying sounds about right, though. stick with what you have until other options become available... or your current contracts expire... or both. good luck and best wishes...

Hello, disgruntled ex-verizon employee. If you work for and are referring to National Mobile (Sovernet) I looked into getting their naked DSL and if you don't get a Dialtone line with them too the price is really high. Verizon DSL was cheaper and I didn't have to have a contract like Sovernet wanted me to commit to. So just because you have choices it doesn't mean that they are cheaper all the time. Sovernet wants you to Bundle their dialtone and DSL just like the rest of them. Don't get me wrong, I think Naked DSL is a great idea and should be made available to everyone! My point is, it isn't just the ILECs that want you to bundle.

And thats nice that you get DSL and dialtone for free each month thru your employer, god I wish I got that, but tell me, are your other benefits as good as they were with Verizon (medical, vacation, pension/401k))? I wouldn't know but I would guess not......I have a friend who works for VZ and he gets pretty good benefits, I think he gets discounted phone service but not free. (This portion Off Topic, sorry)
