I read a blurb about the network storage link months ago and have been watching for it ever since. The NSLU2 is a device that allows you to hook up 2 external hard drives to your network and become NAS. You can read more about it here: »www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?s···101&sp=1
Linksys tech support knows nothing of the product and says it doesnt exist.
Anybody have an ETA on this thing? |

| I have been watching the Buy.com page ever since I found the product skewed up there. There was basically nothing there until a week ago when the picture and product description appeared.
It must be getting closer.
As far as the Linksys page itself not having it - I have seen that many times on their site and other companies, including Microsoft. They don't announce some products, they just put them in the market. |

According to the manual the usb devices are not hot swappable like normal usb, that sucks. |

@66.74.x.x |  The installation guide states that the drive will be re-formated during installation and not usable as a stand alone drive and not hot swapable. Also that it is Windows only (No Mac or unix support) |

If this thing was Firewire id get it, but sinse it isnt forget it.
I dont know ANYONE who uses external HDD's via USB. |

| I bought it. I have not recieved it yet, but will post as soon as I get it.
USB external drives work fine. I have 2 of them that I built with old drives and a $28 kit. They are great back up. This thing will enable me to back everything up over the network. |

Anyone know of similar products to this, but that do not require you to re-format the hard drive. I would still need to be able to directly attach the USB hard drive to a Windows computer as necessary. From reading the User Guide for this product; that would not be possible. |

| I don't believe that it says that the drive has to be formatted. It says that a new drive will have to be formatted before installation. It also states that the drives are not hot swappable, correct - but you can just turn the device off and unplug it, plug another in, and turn it on. Doesn't sound like a hassle to me. |

SquareSlinky, regarding your USB kit for $28, I was wondering if those are made from aluminum? w/o fan? How are they coping with heat from the hard disk? I have one from bytecc w/o fan and I have 20GB in it. I am not sure if they will hold if I put like 160GB and use it with NSUL2.0 and "on" all the time.

"IMPORTANT: The Storage Link's format
is NOT compatible with Windows. You
cannot swap USB hard drives between
Windows systems and the Storage Link." |

Mine are by Plumax. They are plastic and they do have a fan. I have not seen a problem with the heat yet, but then again I have not installed the new 160gb drive in there yet. I have been using a 40gb and a 20gb drive in them. I am going to install the drive tonight.
I will probably get this device tomorrow and will gladly come back and tell you all how it is. |

that's kind of beat the purpose of removable storage if it's not compatible with anything else. but as long as you can upgrade the drive to a bigger size, then reformat using linksys format, i guess it's alright.
but how robust is linknsys's format compared to NTFS5? i think this is the most important of all. |

Since both of the EFG120 and EFG80 products use GPL firmware, ie: Linux and since so many of the other products Linksys is now making are Linux based, it is my guess that this product is using a Linux based filesytem which is why it is not compatible with Windows. If it is something like EXT3 or ReiserFS then the format should be very stable in as compared to something like NTFS5. However since I don't have one, nor do I have an immediate need for one I am only speculating. |
