SOLVED BitTorrent Lockups (AKA Bit Torrent )

The problem with the BitTorrent lockups is simply heat. This, I assume, also applys to large downloads. The Linksys units use an ADMtek chip for the WAN port and this chip gets very hot when stressed out. BitTorrent will definatly stress out every part of the network it travels through. From the FAQ:
BitTorrent makes my machine blue screen! What should I do?
If you have a DSL modem, especially an Alcatel, you should upgrade your drivers. If you have a Linksys network card, you may have to upgrade your network card drivers as well.

If you put you hand on top of the router while running BT, you will feel a hot area.

How I solved it was to pull the unit apart and put a heatsink on the ADMtek chip. Of course, pulling it apart WILL void you warranty, so don't do it

Here is a quick & dirty guide on how to get into the router.

I got the heat sink from a kit I bought here but I don't see it now (it was a generic chipset 'kit' with two sided tape), This might work. (I don't know this vendor, this is for reference only)

Did you have to remove any screws to open the router case?

Was the torrent issues you were having include the router just plain locking up and needed to be power reset?

How long are you now able to run a torrent w/o lockup of the router?

No screws, it just 'snaps' together/apart.

Yes, it would just lockup. All the lights would be on but I could not access the internet from any computer. Turning the unit off and then back on would get it to work again for a short time.

Since putting the heatsink on, I haven't had ~any~ lockups and I keep BitTorrent running 24/7 I also didn't put the top part back on, since it sit's in a closet (see the pic named Heatsink above)

Great post. I get the same "lockup" problems on my BEFSR11 (1.42.7) firmware running Bit Torrent. After a several hours, I'll have to reset the router by plugging the plug. I'll have to investigate installing a heatsink on that chip.

just thought I'd post back in on this. Yesterday I upgraded my SX41's ROM with version 1.51 after watching 7 pages of other people reporting back on their results. NO MORE torrents lockups! With unlimited connections and transfer rates, I downloaded a 2gb file last night without ANY lockups. I would not have lasted even 3 minutes if I had tried that with FW v1.47. I'm happy.
I'm not sure what or how you're experiencing your success but I had my doubts about your solution working for me. My router had a 120mm whisper fan blowing on it's case and ambient room temp has been in the 68-72 range for the past week. I'd still get lockups. You'd also expect it to work for a while until it heated up then fail quicker and quicker was the chip had already been heated. Mine would lockup every 2-3 minutes and I'd have to cycle it's power to get control back.

3 days of continual torrents. 4 running at once with unlimited speed and connections. No lockups! For me 1.51 solved my issues. I did however place a 120mm whisper fan blowing against the side of my linksys stack on the 2nd day just because the cases were warm. Not because they'd locked or anything.
