| Why Can't I upgrade my 3351?
Hi All.
I have a 3351 that was originally delivered by Swisscom.
I'd like to upgrade the firmware (currently v6.3.0R9) to the latest version (7.3.1R0).
But I can't -- despite trying to do it a variety of ways, and despite a web page at netopia that is specifically dedicated to Swisscom customers that tells them how to upgrade their 3351's to 7.3.1R0 (see »www.netopia.com/equipment/intl/e···com.html), my 3351 always reports (after a restart after attempting to upgrade the firmware) the following (among other things) :
00:00:00:05 L5 LIC: No licenses found in flash 00:00:00:05 L4 BR: Using saved configuration options 00:00:00:05 L4 BR: Cayman SOC OS version 6.3.0 (build R9) 00:00:00:05 L4 BR: Cayman-3000/104nnnnn (Cayman-3000, rev 1), PID 1205 00:00:00:05 L4 BR: last install status: Firmware update skipped - same revision or user declined 00:00:00:05 L4 BR: memory sizes - 2048K Flash, 8192K RAM
I'm absolutely certain that I've been trying to update the firmware with 7.3.1R0, yet it's always rejecting it as "same revision or user declined" (I didn't decline it).
So what's up with that? Is the "LIC: No licenses found in flash" a clue that perhaps without a license, it won't accept the v7.3.1R0 firmware because perhaps you need some sort of lcense to use that version? But, it's originally a Swisscom device? Really weird ...
The 3351 functions properly with the existing firmware.
Thanks for any insight.

| 33xx series routers only shipped with 6.3 firmware for a brief period of time when they first came out, then they went to 7.x. since this is a major firmware, it requires an updater file. unfortunately, netopia has not created the seperate updater file and AFAIK there are no plans for those original models to be updated to the 7.x series firmware. i have a 3346 that is in the same boat as you. -- If you can read this, thank a teacher..........and since it's in English, thank a soldier. |

| Hi David.
Thanks for the reply ... but I'm not sure I agree ...
That's because the website I mention explicitly says that the upgrade is for Swisscom 33xx users (i.e. people who got their 3341's and 3351's from Swisscom) to upgrade from 6.3.0R9 to 7.3.1R0.
Furthermore, it states that for users beyond 7.3.0 (i.e. the 'later' ones you mention), then you can use the internally accessible menu to do the upgrade.
So, it's as if the Swisscom users (at a minimum, maybe all 3341/3351 users) can use the procedure to do the upgrade.
Of course, I tried it both ways, both internally and by forcing the nir731r0.bin file down the 3351's throat, and neither system worked ...
That's why I have this nagging suspicion that there's some sort of license missing from this particular unit (though I can't really see how that can be) that would somehow activiate it to bcome a 'Swisscom-uniqe' unit, that would then accept the upgrade.
Or maybe Netopia just screwed up and this router just can't be upgraded ...

| Hi David.
Well, it looks like you're definitely right about the 3351's non-upgradability, though I really don't understand why the Swisscom 6.3.0R9-to-7.3.1R0 upgrade page and its instructions exist ...
As a final test, I tried using the shell to upload the firmware via tftp -- I get a 0x4b0007 tftp error (after a while) when I try the upload that way.
So it's all very consistent: every attempt to update the firmware, using a variety of seemingly proper ways, simply results in the 3351 rejecting the new code outright.

| reply to aekalman yeah, i went thru the exact same thing on my 3346. i emailed netopia, and they said that any 334x series that shipped with 6.3 firmware would not be upgradable to 7.x.
and thanks, i ran across that line a few days back and felt it was the perfect sig! -- If you can read this, thank a teacher..........and since it's in English, thank a soldier. |

| reply to aekalman Can't Upgrade 3220H from 5.4 to 6.3 using telnet
I've been trying to upgrade the firmware in my 3220H as well.
I noticed you tried the Telnet option.
The instructions indicate using 163.176.4.31 as the tftp server ip.
But, the Telnet session just hangs after I specify the server address and file name for the updater file.
Note: 1). B/c I have v5.4, I don't have an "upgrade" option in the very old GUI when I access the modem using a browswer and its default gateway ip.
2) I contacted Netopia on this some many weeks ago, and they said the same thing, that the options is not in its GUI via browser access.
3) Netopia said something about calling the 800 number (they supplied in their return e-mail) and perhaps they can upgrade/install directly.
Well, needless to say, I haven't tried calling them just haven't found the time b/c telephones are not my deal.
So, has anybody ever been successful with the telnet/server address for upgrading firmware of their routers? specifically 3220H?
I say this b/c I ftp'd into the server address above, and it has three directories private pub webdl
My point is, if the Telnet upgrade session I am trying to do simply looks at the root directory of the server addrss I provide, then it is nnot going to find the file name I specify for it to find - the updater fine name.
Obviously the server is accessible (confirmed using ftp) so why is my update attempt timeing out?
My guess is its because it can find the file (specific) file "u8a110R0.COS". I've wandered around the ftp file directories and didn't find that file in the obviously places like router/firmware/ etc....
Any suggestions? |
