Wireless is hard

The only time my XP machines lose their wireless connection is when we use the cordless phone. :/

Re: Wireless is hard

My buddy comes over to my house with his XP laptop that has built-in wireless. My laptop is running Win98 and a PCMCIA D-Link card.

The two laptops can be sitting right next to each other, mine streaming audio and video, his sitting in IRC, and he'll lose his connection randomly while mine hums along quite fine.

To me, that sounds like an XP driver problem.

Funny thing is, my D-Link signal strength indicator would sometimes say "Not connected" and yet I could still browse and stream.

Re: Wireless is hard

So, if you go into the Services Manager and turn off the Wireless Zero Config service, and then make sure it is set to disabled on startup, does this solve the problem?

If you turn this off, how do you install and configure Wireless Adapters?

I'd like to know, since some guys in my office have XP notebooks that do this, and I finally gave up trying to figure out why, and just told them to live with it.

If it can be fixed, I'll be estatic.

Re: Wireless is hard

Hi,

When I set my WiFi up I had terrible issues with connectivity and trying to config the WEP. . . .

Untill I turned off the WinXp wireless control and installed the software that came ith thcard (Netgear).

"a Microsoft spokesman gives an interesting runaround, suggesting the indicator indicates your "association" with an access point, not signal strength"! I think that sums it all up.

Re: Wireless is hard

thanks

i'll tell him to shut that service off and install the software if it isnt already.

chalk that up to another case of Microsoft playing "they know best".

Have you tried adjusting your channel to say 11 instead of 1? I hear that cordless phones run on the 1 channel, so change your wireless change with your software if you can.

As a netgear wireless user, I've known that wireless zero is a POS and needed to be turned off with help from ppl in the forums here.

I run XP on a wireless laptop. Runs 24-7 with Wireless Zero Configuration on. No problems, no hassles, no drops. Ever. And yes, WEP is enabled along with firewalls, MAC locking and through an 802.1x captive portal. Well, it does drop - when I go past 1/2 a mile away from my house. ;> I use a D-link USB wireless adaptor, Another D-link PCMCIA card, and a Linksys A-B-G card on that machine with no headaches.

MS is not at fault here, IMO.

Re: Wireless is hard

I went through the same thing. Suspecting my new Windows XP OS, when in fact all was solved when I downloaded the latest drivers for my TrueMobile 1300 series miniPCI card.

Before you try anything else, UPGRADE YOUR WIRELESS DRIVER!

Ok, guys my buddy forwarded me this board and asked me if I could help out. Being a network administrator I have access to a lot of software and I have found that Boingo is the best. I know its corny but the fact is that they have a major money and have created a great product. You don't need an account and it keeps you connected. It will seek about the strongest signal and ask you if you want to connect to it. It will also give you all the other sites that you can connect to also.

I was suffering from the same issue and I have an Toshiba R100 (very thin, about 2 pounds) which runs the Intel lan 2100 3b mini pci adapter. Toshiba does not give you the actual package for the intel adapter. I found the software in Japan ftp site.
I found the software that gives you greater distance. Reason why its not public software. FCC regulations.

If you would like program I can place in an ftp directory if you would like. You have to have the lan 2100 3b mini.

Let me know. I'm new here and I would like to help if I can.

Thank you, Jason
