Getting rid of SBC Yahoo Reboot Helper prompt boxI am working on repairing (more like removing crapware and spyware) a friend's machine who formerly had SBC/Yahoo DSL service. (She can't get it where she lives now.)
Every time I boot the machine, I get a prompt box that asks for me to insert the SBC Yahoo Installer CD. I want to get rid of this thing. I have tried everything from attempting to uninstall the software (unsuccessful- couldn't find the file, it said!) to picking through the registry to find where this is hiding, to no avail. The Startup files in msconfig do not show this, either.
How do I get rid of this prompt box? The OS is Windows XP Home.
Thanks! Sunfell |

go here: » tinyurl.com/3fem2 and download regcleaner. You can remove all that garbage very easily. |

Did that- Regclean didn't touch it. It's one of my favorite tools, too.

Did you check the FAQ for uninstall? » SBC DSL FAQ » How do I uninstall the SBC Yahoo! DSL software? (Windows) although it sounds as though the uninstall got broken along the way. Depending on the OS you might be able to you the Task Manager to find the offending program and then finding the file and deleting it. |

That is what happened- the uninstall was 'broken' when I received the machine. If I knew which process in Startup and TaskMan was creating this prompt box, I'd find and delete it. The only thing that looks close is something called 'Ypager', but I doubt that is it.
I am playing with MSCONFIG to see where this is hiding- I am hoping it is in the Startup process somewhere.

YPager is part of Yahoo's Pager. You can remove that. You can go to the registry and search for Broadjump and Yahoo to remove that garbage. There is a third one I can't think of right now but see if that works.
Don't forget to reboot after deleting those keys. |

It's called "reboothelper" I believe, just yank it from the startup menu under msconfig.
The reg key should be in ; Hkey_local_machine>software>microsoft>windows>current_version>run
Just FYI, prolly fixed by now. |

The actual program is "recoverfromreboo.exe." Its located in the temp folder in your Windows directory. It does show in MSConfig, and it's located in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE run key. Removing it from either place allows you to remove it from startup. |

Another option if you still have the sbc yahoo cd is to put it in the cd drive, let it autostart, then select cancel the first chance you get, then exit after that. The installer program will give the dire warning that your sbc yahoo hasn't finished installing(breaks your heart eh?) and then end. |

I finally got rid of it by going to the Startup section in the Registry, and yanking it out by its roots. Bye, bye prompt box.
Found a few other rude surprises there- like trojan beacons and porn dialers, and deleted them, too. Picking through the Registry isn't for the faint of heart, but sometimes that's the only thing you can do.
Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

you could have also cleared out your 'temp' folder at
c:\windows\temp
or
C:\Documents and Settings\Redwine\Local Settings\Temp
I had someone ask me this a while back, so I installed the software to re-create the problem. This is what fixed it for me. |
