Alternatives

Ok, maybe this isn't place to ask, but after seeing all the posts about the 3546 having sync problems, (and I am currently experiencing these myself) I want to know if there is a current alternative to the Cayman 3546 on the market?

Thanks,

Re: Alternatives

you can still get the 3220, but it is more expensive for less features. i would hang iin there with the 3546, netopia and the carriers will get it worked out. it is obviously something that happens on certain lines that makes the router go stupid. when they figure out what it is, they should have a fix shortly thereafter.

If you don't want to run the script yourself, then just periodically look at your Upstream Noise Margin on your dsl stats page. From mine and others, it should start out rather high (18 - 16) and stay there for a 1 to 3 days and then begin to drop. Some have seen slow drops, others fast, but most seem to see it bounce around in single digits for a while.

See what yours is doing. If it is experiencing the same problems, I would be that davidg is correct. They will be coming out with a fix.

Netopia has only seen systematic reports on the problem for the past few weeks. Prior to that there were only sporadic reports about the problem scattered throughout the forums here. Chances are that they weren't aware of the problem before this winter's speed upgrades. In early March, Netopia denied ever hearing about this problem when I spoke with a Tier 2 tech.

So it may take a while before a fix is available.

Re: Alternatives

I requested support from Netopia for this issue and was told:

"We do not have any reports of a behaviour like this and there are thousands of routers deployed. Have your line provider monitor your connection and test the line."

This was on June 10. FYI.

Re: Alternatives

On March 11, when the Netopia Tier 2 tech told me that they had no record of this problem ever being reported in their knowledge base, I explicitly told her to enter it so she wouldn't have to say that to the next person reporting decaying noise margins.

If Netopia's solution to problems with their equipment is to ignore the problem reports, then I'm quite glad that I returned my 3546 to SBC as defective. So they have squandered two months in denial. Not a very pro-active company from the looks of it.

IMO, Netopia is due for a little bashing here.

I have stopped using my Netopia Cayman 3546 until they get their ducks lined up. I'm now using a Westell 2200 with absolutely no problems with BS Xtreme. With what I paid for the cayman and the use I gotten out of it, I wasted my money on a Netopia product. That will not happen again.

As I read the docs on the Westell 2200, it doesn't look like it will only handle 1 public IP. I'm on the static plan. Is there a stable alternative to the 3546 that will handle multiply assigned IPs in both a NAT, pinhole and bridge mode?

I'll keep posting my stats as long as I have the Cayman, but I have to admit I'm not very encouraged by what I'm hearing here. I may try calling tomorrow to see what I am told, but I can't really afford to sit on hold for any length of time, so I don't hold much hope.

I went back to my 3220. Haven't had any sync problems yet.
