I don't believe that it says that the drive has to be formatted. It says that a new drive will have to be formatted before installation. It also states that the drives are not hot swappable, correct - but you can just turn the device off and unplug it, plug another in, and turn it on. Doesn't sound like a hassle to me.

The following is a quote from page 8 of the Linksys User Guide. That is how I came to the conclusion.

"IMPORTANT: The Storage Link's format
is NOT compatible with Windows. You
cannot swap USB hard drives between
Windows systems and the Storage Link."
