| dont know about the $300 price range but the following links might help. I managed ~1 mile with a MR814 v2 once. But the speed was crappy. but it works.
good luck

whoops... All those links are for directional antennas... you are looking for omni directional ones... YOu can only get the range that you looking for with directional ones for under 300 bucks.. for an omnidirectional solution you will need to boost the signal. But that does not make teh FCC happy... »www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/ar···/1428941 |

| reply to kicken_acid If money's not an issue (you're off by at least an order of magnitude) -- and you have line of sight with your friends, you need
1) An omnidirectional antenna at your location 2) A high quality AP with external antenna connectors at your location 3) A NAT router at your location. 4) Directional antennas at each of your friends' houses 5) Wireless bridges at each of your friends' houses 6) Mounting hardware, weatherproof boxes, cable, connectors, lightning protection, etc.
If you want to extend it with another WAP, you need to make sure your WAP is capable of WDS (that's "Wireless Distribution System), and you will need a dual-radio repeater and another omni (as well as a directional antenna) at the extension location.
If you really thought you could do it in the ballpark of $300, you're better off dropping the idea.
If not, search this forum; there are people who have pulled stuff like this off.
Note that what you're asking, essentially, is how to set up a wireless ISP. |

| Thanks for the information, essentially that's what we are wanting to do re sale the bandwidth. Do any of you know exactly how to tell the range these omni antenna give, what exactly does a 10db antenna mean, and do you think this would work for a antenna »www.guerrilla.net/reference/ante···ar_omni/ I really appreciate you replies, now if someone could explain to me the actual process of setting up this hardware or a site that does id appreciate it:):) |

| I think reselling an internet/cable connection is illegal. But thats another story. The antenna that you found on guerrilla.net is similar in config to this one »www.azwardriving.com/hardware/ou···omni.php
*** Approximate 2.2 dBi range: 100 ft indoors @ 11megs, 350 ft @ 1meg Approximate 12 dBi range: 1.4 miles @ 11megs, 4.5miles @ 1meg Approximate 24 dBi range: 11.5 miles @ 11megs, 25miles @ 1meg ***
How many people are you trying to connect? if its no more that 3-4 then read this one. These guys did it using directional antennas, (covering 22 miles), which you can buy or make @ home. »nepalwireless.net/

| reply to kicken_acid There are wi-fi calculators all over the net; you can use that plus the gain numbers for the antennas, and the power and the sensitivity numbers for the radios (check out manufacturer's site or Seattle Wireless) to get your likely distances.
Note that for an omni, gain isn't all that matters. You also need to know the radiation pattern. If your targets aren't within the high-power areas of the pattern, you don't get the performance you want. An antenna manufacturer should provide diagrams of the pattern; use that with a topo map to make sure you're covering the area you want to.
As for building your own -- sure, it'll work. But you do have to make sure your measurements are accurate and precise, or (once again) you lose performance. And by the time you buy the tools, you'll probably not be saving all that much.
If you have access to discarded dishes, the directional antennas are a simpler proposition to build yourself. Again, search the net for instructions. |
