| Network Creation(Wifi/Wired)Advice
Heya,
I need some advice in creating a new based wifi-g network(SOHO).
To make matters simple, I've attached the following sketch.
Please note, that all the comp's are running win2kpro, have static IP addresses, and connected/wired to the switches. By attaching the Switches to the Wireless Access points, I'm trying to avoid Wifi solutions for each machine.
I have two main concerns and a small one :
1. Both the Gateway/Router, and the Wireless AP on the 1st floor have DHCP. So I need to disable one of them, which one? and does it matter? * could get a 4 in 1 machine(Combo-Wireless, Modem, AP, Router)thus, solving the issue partially, but I do want to complicate things I want to diverse and buy several appliances from several vendors.
2. Do I really need two Access Points? do they work together? WHy noy buy a Wireless Bridge for the second floor Switch?
3. Should I expect problems by attaching the Wireless AP's to the wired Switches? Remember that all the machines are connected first to the switches and the AP's are then connected to the switches?
Thanks in advance for the help. |

| 1) Turn off DHCP on everything since you're not using it. I don't think a combo setup would work. You're using the APs in a bridged mode setup here, and I don't think the combo units will do that (could be wrong). As for buying from several vendors, I would suggest purchasing the two APs you are going to use as bridges from the same vendor.
2) Yes, you need two APs running in bridge mode to connect the wired segments. Most APs can act as bridges.
3) The only problem is that you're going to suffer on throughput. You would normally have a full 100mb pipe between floors. You're going to bring it down to a 54mb connection, and realistically only get a fraction of that as true throughput. |

| reply to cybrosh Hi dervari,
Thanks for replying mate.
THere's the combo : »www.3com.com/prod/en_EU_EMEA/det···754G72-A
Mmm...could you please give some more details on the throughput?
Also, the diversity of appliances which I intended was something like, 3com, linksys, netgear, etc' all working along, together. Do they tend to work with each other or cause problems and get in the way? |
