[W2K] CD ROM Drives Say "No Disc" when disc inserted

One of my Windows 2000 boxes recently developed a strange problem with both the CD and the DVD drives: When I insert a CD and try to open the drive's icon, Windows 2000 (SP4) says there's no disc in the drive. I think this problem began after I updated to SP4 from SP2, where it was at for a couple years.

The workaround I've been using is to fire up Prassi Primo DVD and have it scan the drive. Then close Prassi, then I can access the CD/DVD drive.

I have a hunch this is an SP4 problem, as it never happened before the SP4 upgrade (which was needed for a software install).

Any ideas on a fix, reg hack, etc?

Do you use any sort of disk imaging or backup-to-CD software? If so and you're as lazy about labeling disks as me, you might be trying to read one of those CDs.

I have NovaBack Instant Recovery, a Linux-based program on bootable CD, that writes the backups in a proprietary format that gets the "no disk" or equivalent message from Win??, Linux, OS X, and OS/2 if you try to read them outside IR. (they were labelled late one night with a pencil - doesn't show up too well in the light of day )

No, I don't use any unusual backup programs from inside Windows.

The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that the problem came after installing Service Pack 4. I didn't have any trouble up to about a month ago, which was when SP4 was installed. I made no other changes to the system.

I back up from a DOS image CD with Norton Ghost and back up the partition.

Then, in addition of Cudni's suggestions, you might want to check the optical drive manufacturer's sites for firmware updates.

This is affecting two drives--a CD and a DVD writer. The DVD writer has the last and most recent ROM update that Pioneer released. As for the CD drive, I'm thinking of replacing it. It takes almost a minute to recognize a CD and locks out Explorer during that whole minute.

What is the exact error message you get when you insert a CD in the drives?

Anything show up in the Event Viewer logs (Start > Run > eventvwr)?

What burning software have you installed?

Have you installed an ASPI layer?

"Please insert a disc into drive " is the exact error, the drive letter being the letter of the CD or DVD drive.

No logged error.

Using Prassi Primo DVD for burning.

I installed an ASPI layer 2 years ago, so that I could rip audio tracks from CDs with Audio Catalyst.

As I mentioned, the CD/DVD drives seemed to work fine for those two years, right up to just prior to installing SP4.

Check inside your comptuer and see if they are both Plugged into the same IDE ports.

Im thinkin your secondary IDE port has somehow stuffed up (if you change things often you may have bent a pin or soemthing.)

I suggest you try pluggin one of your cdrom drive into the cable coming from the first IDE port (same as your harddrive) and seeing if it works at all.

I do not think it would be windows 2000 sp4.

I've now had the exact same problem you've described on three Win2K systems, all of differing hardware configurations. I don't know for sure when it started, but I think it was earlier than SP3.

I've never gotten a corrective solution, but a work-around is to leave a CD in each drive at login time, then the problem does not occur.

If I forget to leave a CD in the drive, I need only logout then log back in with a CD in the drive (reboot not needed) and then it's OK.

I've been Googling this issue for close to two years now, have found only a small number of users with the problem, but none of thise users ever got a solution. No admission on Microsoft knowledgebase that it's even a problem.

That the problem occurs with no CD in the drive at login time (rather than boot time) led me to think it was some startup program that causes it (such as packet writing software like DirectCD or InCD) but I was able to rule that out.

Re: [W2K] CD ROM Drives Say "No Disc" when disc in

Try removing the CD & DVD drives in Device Manager, then reboot to allow W2K to reconfigure and reinstall their drivers.

Also, as mentioned before, if they're on the same IDE ctrlr, the CD drive may be causing a problem with reading a disk on the DVD drive. Try disconnecting the CD drive from the ctrlr and see if you still have the problem with the DVD.

My W2K system install had SP4 slipstreamed and I've had no difficulties at all with my optical drives. I'm no O/S expert but, IIRC, SP3 and later enabled support for HDDs >137GB. I'm wondering if those changes somehow mucked around with the way it accesses everything on the IDE channels (grasping at straws).

I should emphasize that NO hardware changes occured for over a year. Well, I did upgrade from an XP2400+ to an XP2600+ CPU, but that's it. No changes to cabling.

The only software change was the upgrade to SP4. Right after that is when I noticed I no longer could access the CD or DVD drives without first starting up Prassi to reconnect to the drives by scanning the bus.

Each optical drive is on it's own controller. IDE primaries are used by hard drives. Secondaries are used by optical drives.

Incidentally, since I've been studying Adobe AfterEffects, and bought the book "Creating Motion Graphics", the CD that came with the book has been permanently resident in the CD drive. So even booting with a CD in the drive doesn't cure the problem.

The closest theory is the possible mucking up of the CDs because of the >137GB support.
I'll try uninstalling the devices and see if that fixes it.

Also, burning software can sometimes cause problems.

Another thing you might consider, is to uninstall all the burning software you have now, including any packet writing software and UDF readers, if installed.

After uninstalling the software, follow the steps in the following MS KB article to remove any "filter drivers", if they exist:

»support.microsoft.com/default.as···S;270008

Then test your drives, and reinstall the software.

Also, since you have installed an ASPI layer, consider updating it:

I'm not using any junk burning software like that v5 disaster from a leading burning software maker that screwed up my wife's machine a few years ago. Prassi is on all my machines and it's got a solid track record. No shareware/freeware is installed.
The mostly likely possibility COULD be that SP4 is somehow interfering with my ASPI layer.
I don't use packet writing software either. That has caused problems in the past, requiring me to Norton Ghost restore my entire partition to get back to a working system.
It looks like the culprit is SP4.

One other thing to check, is the drivers for the optical drives in Device Manager.

Some programs may quietly install drivers. For instance Winamp 5, if the option for CD burning capability is not un-checked, will install drivers.
