| [XP Pro] [SP2] "Insert picture" crashes MS Office programs
A few weeks back I posted this »[XP Pro] [SP2] "faulting module" comctl32.dll wondering if anyone had this problem with SP2. I updated to v.2149 on June 15, but the same problem is still occurring.
All Office 2003 programs crash when attempting to use Insert > Picture.
I can bypass the crash by using Insert > Object > Create from File > Browse utility, but not a simple Insert > Picture. All other features are working properly from the Insert toolbar. The screenshot shows how the files are being listed in an unusual manner.
Has anyone come across this yet?

| Hi auggy ,
Yes, that was one of the first things I did. I keep coming up with the same error over and over:
Faulting application winword.exe, version 11.0.6113.0, stamp 40077019, faulting module comctl32.dll, version 6.0.2900.2149, stamp 40c90789, debug? 0, fault address 0x00061493.
The error reads the same on all programs. -- Security Forum FAQs .. ♥ .. "Raj karega Khalsa!" .. ♥ .. Starfire "5 in 4" |

| reply to Sparrow Okay, I may have found the problem - a new application error just turned up regarding the imagex.exe from Sierra Imaging: »www.bugtoaster.com/dw15/reports/···ex%2Eexe
Here's the new error: Faulting application imagex.exe, version 1.0.0.1, faulting module mfc42.dll, version 6.2.4131.0, fault address 0x00013d2a
Off on a new search o resolve this. If anyone else has ideas, naturally they are very welcome! -- Security Forum FAQs .. ♥ .. "Raj karega Khalsa!" .. ♥ .. Starfire "5 in 4" |

| In reguards to the comctl32.dll problem, have you tried to reinstall the comctl32.ocx file? I just ran Word 2003 (running XP SP2-2149 also)& tried insert picture with no problems. I know a while back I had some problems with that error then I reinstalled comctl32.ocx & the problems went away. Check on MS site for the file, I don't remember where I got it from. Here is the file that I use if you can't find it -- I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it. |

I did search for the comctl32.dll previously, but was unable to locate the proper version which should be 5.82.2900.2149. Is this the version you have as well?
The comctl32.ocx, v.6.0.81.5, 594 KB (608,448 bytes) has not been updated since May 22, 2000. If I remember correctly comctl32.ocx is an OLE module, »www.microsoft.com/com/resources/oleview.asp, which has quietly been replaced by DCOM »www.microsoft.com/com/tech/DCOM.asp.
I do not understand all of this, but believe the problem may be resting in the OLE files somewhere I may never find; or I may need to uninstall Sierra Imaging's Image Expert which I have not been able to upgrade, and may be one of the applications that is not compatible with SP2.
I did save the file however, thank you. -- Security Forum FAQs .. ♥ .. "Raj karega Khalsa!" .. ♥ .. Starfire "5 in 4" |

| Well I have five comctl.dll files on my system. The first two are the same as yours, the next two are 6.02600.0 which look like the original XP ones, then the last one is 6.0.2900.2149. As you can see the last three are not in the system32 folder but in a folder down the chain, I don't know if that has anything to do with it. -- I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it. |

| Thank you. This is interesting. I have three more than you (not counting "Your file" which is sitting on my desktop right now), all dated June 15, 2004, which was the day RC2 2149 was released.
I have different versions from March 12, 2004, (v.2096), and one from Aug. 29, 2003 (v.2800.1106) that don't match yours. Both of mine look like duplicates that were not overwritten with the latest download (v.2149), which may be part of the problem.
Okay, something is definitely not right here, but it is starting to make sense. I ran comctl32.dll through Dependency Walker (should have done this sooner) and received this warning:
Warning: At least one module has an unresolved import due to a missing export function in a delay-load dependent module.
I'm going to have to go through the modules in the tree and see if I can track it down. By the time I figure this out, SP2 will be finalized, and I can reformat and start all over.
In the meantime, I am going to borrow your sig: "I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it."
Thank you very much for your help. I sincerely appreciate it. -- Security Forum FAQs .. ♥ .. "Raj karega Khalsa!" .. ♥ .. Starfire "5 in 4" |
