NEW ADSL option, without voice service

Lightning Bolt is introducing dedicated loop ADSL. Known in the industry as "dry loop" or "naked" DSL, Lightning Bolt's dedicated loop ADSL services are designed to help us expand our customer base by meeting the needs of end users who may not fit into the standard, line-shared ADSL market.

Dedicated loop ADSL is a suite of services that will be rolled out by Lightning Bolt in several different phases. During the first phase, we will make a dedicated loop 1.5/384 ADSL service available for ordering within one week. Additional dedicated loop SOHO services are expected to be launched in the July and August timeframe.

This targets end users who want to:
- Eliminate their local phone line(s) in favor of wireless phone service
- Add voice capabilities on top of their broadband service without maintaining or adding a local phone line
- Avoid certain broadband installation issues associated with line-shared ADSL services

EDIT:

Here is some more info on this new product.
- Residential ONLY, this can NOT be install at a commercial location
- This does require a special Pro-install (The circuit has to be brought from the De-Marc to a Jack in your house)
- NO SLA of any kind, just like all other ADSL options

Pricing and fees are still being set, but expect more info by the end of this week.

If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me.

Brent

Hey Brent,

I am curious. How will you qualify this service?? Will it go under the same rules as SDSL?? What I mean is, will the dry loop be put in regardless, tested, and then rejected or accepted??

I know for a fact that my location can get a dry loop for dsl at 15,900 feet. I am wondering if that distance will work for your new tier?

P.S. - I am just curious at this point, as I may be moving soon. Unfortunately I know I will be too far out at the house we are looking at.

Just as SDSL, we have a database that gives us a estimate of SDSL distance, we install the loop, and the service at then check the distance.

The magic number I'm hearing for the new Dry ADSL is 15000 feet, so you are borderline for it.

Is there any monthly fee that need to be paid to the ILEC, or everything is included in one single amount paid to the DSL provider?

Everything is included, and paid to the DSL provider. We do not add any taxes or hidden charges to the price listed on our site.

you, the user, pays NOTHING to the ILEC. We, the ISP handle that.

Hi Brent,

Will SDSL be available, too? If so, is it pricey?

I'm about 12,000 feet and still could never figure out why, on a dry pair (the only thing available in MI in 1998), a Telocity/Rhythms 784/784 SDSL performed for a year, locked like a brick, with NEVER a problem.

Then, when Rhythms went belly-up and I got switched on the exact same dry pair to an Ameritech 768/128 ADSL all the older problems came back.

Everyone says that sounds backwards - SDSL should be more picky!

SDSL has always been available, I'm not sure I'm following your question. SDSL is a MUCH higher quality service, verse ADSL. And you do pay more for the higher quality.

I kept hearing, on that same line, 784/784 SDSL from Rhythms should not have run better than 768/128 ADSL from Ameritech. But it did. Would you expect that?

I don't think the phone company ran out and added bridge taps. But is it true I might have been switched from premium copper of some sort?

What makes SDSL so expensive now? Guaranteed service level agreements? (is that the SLA?)

I know, Rhythms supplying 784/784 SDSL for $49.95 is always followed by "Rhythms went belly-up, too!"

Yes, it would make sense a SDSL line, ran better then a ADSL line. Different DSLAM's, different routers, different network, etc.

SDSL cost are high, 1, due to the SLA's, which involve time lines with ILEC's, etc. and the bandwidth you get.

The low cost SDSL options of the 90's are gone, and so are the companies.

What makes SDSL with no SLA unfeasible? When I saw you were packaging "dry-loops" I immediately thought of the SDSL possibilities.

Here's the core of what I'm asking...

When switched from SDSL to ADSL dry pair I'm assuming the copper to the CO stayed the same. Perhaps this isn't true but at my end there was no change.

So, a the same copper line conditioned for SDSL may run like crap under ADSL? I'm talking sync stability only.

Or... did my run get switched? All data I see says SDSL requires shorter distances.

would canibalize Covad's profitable and surging SDSL biz. By offering sla's they take advantage of the inherent fact that sdsl is very stable. It's a marketing move.

So the stringent requirements for copper distance is based on SLA vs. non-SLA considerations and NOT by the technology?

OK, first, lets get back on topic with ADSL, 2nd you can NOT compare SDSL, and ADSL, 2 very different types of DSL. Technology, and service.

I'm not going to go any further, as this is about dry ADSL, and NOT about SDSL, so feel free to start a new topic, but this has been covered before.

Trying to compare the 2, is like comparing a Corvette, and a chevy metro.

"The magic number I'm hearing for the new Dry ADSL is 15000 feet, so you are borderline for it."

Are you saying that the dry pair max. distance is greater than the corresponding shared-line max. distance?

No, Not at all, Here are the current MAX distances for Line share. The dry ADSL should be very close to the same. »Covad Service

Hi Brent,

I currently have an SDSL line installed. Can I safely assume that since my dry loop was approved for SDSL it is a good quality loop that would get good margins with ADSL?

Yes, but any new order you do will NOT be placed on the same loop.

When you disconnect an order, DSL, or Voice, the ILEC disconnects it. when a new line is ordered chances of getting the exact same pair back, is very slim.

My current line is active. Couldn't I just do an ISP switch to Lightning Bolt and have Covad switch me at the DSLAM?
