 | Telus Blocking Port 80? Hi,
I have been running my website on the Standard DSL connection and all of sudden it stopped working. I did everything to attempt to figure it out. Finally I ran a port scanning program and it shows up as PORT 80 Filtered. So Telus is my host. Is anyone else having this problem? I don't think they would block this port just cause i was hosting a web site. I am thinking its some virus protection measure they have taken. BTW I connected without any protection. So it is not a firewall problem.
Does anyone have any advise?
Thanks LT |

»*NOTIFICATION* - TELUS HSIA Network Change |
|
 | I was reading that and it said "The policy will only be applied to dynamic IP HSIA connections, and not to those with static IP or Business connections."
Does this mean that any Business account would not have those changes? Like the "TELUS high speed Office 2.5" plan for $59.99. I run a small web server to host my website for some friends, therefore I don't have $90 to spend on a ADSL connection that can upload 1Mb.
Does ths standard Business account have port 80 blocked? BTW, Ii'm currently on the 1.5mb/512kb plan.
Thanks,
Eugene (Long time Telus user) |

 | Office 2.5 is still a dynamic IP plan. What you would want is server 2 IP, then theres no more worries |
|
 | i understand, but the cost difference is a bit too much. I can use a dynamic DNS to update if it ever changes. I have a home account that just got the IP changed after a year. (Home 1.5)
I'm just concerned if it has port 80 and 21 open. |
|
 | reply to leeanator5 Can someone please answer me?
Question: is port 80 and 21 open on the Business DSL Plan. The Office 2.5 Plan, not the Server plans. |
|
 | server plans = static IP. no filtering. office plans = dynamic IP. filtering.
cheers

 | Thanks for the response Telus Helper!
That's quite bad that i'll have to pay $89 to host a server through port 80 |

 | reply to leeanator5 check out dyndns.org, they offer port redirecting services so you can use a non standard port. |

Not quite... I use that service myself, even with my Server 2.5 plan. If I'm using port 8080 or 81 (I host multiple web servers) you still have to add the port to the end. Though, installing some free software (they have links) You won't have to keep track of your changing IP. (Most routers have the dyndns feature in them anyway)
»blahblah.mine.nu:81 for example.
Unfortunately I wish they did offer, being able to assign a certain port to your url, so it automatically directs itself, instead of having to add the port number to the end of the url.
Take Care, Zac |

 | reply to leeanator5 Un block it,
or talk to that crooked management and get them to lower the price on your server package.
If i talked to telus could they unblock it for me? Prolly not,
I am also going to be looking for a new host...so get to work Telus. |

Host your webpage on a port # such as... 60 (if it isnt blocked)
Goto mydomain, register your domain (It's free)
USe stealth forwarding to »myip:60
Thats a way to get around it - I have my webpage running so I can access files when I'm out of town. This works perfectly... no one can even tell I'm forwarding to an IP... unless they look in the source and stuff.
Telus blocking ports... They don't seem to care about bandwidth, so I don't see why they'd do this. Maybe they really are just trying to "Protect" us from virus's, and increase network throughoutput - Would be nice if users could turn this off.
I'd say maybe 5% of telus users, use this port - Some use it to host a webpage... but if they stay within there "b/w limits" I dont see what the problem would be :\ Course they dont monitor... so oh well. Would be nice if telus could unblock it for people who ask, Or have it default on... and put an option in the HSIA network to fix it.
I'm in a smaller area, where this hasn't tooken place yet - Suprises me... Because I am 5 minutes from Vancouver. Maybe they forgot about my town, and wont ever impliment it... Not that I use it much, so it doesn't matter:)
Just hate the fact that we are being "Restricted". I see .Edu people have firewalls and ports being blocked... but to have telus? I don't see a need. Whats next? Block my VOIP line? Sad thing is.... Only other people is shaw. I'd have to pay for shaw... AND telus, if they ever decided to screw me over like that. Lets have faith tho.... :| |

Ah, ok. I just use the StaticDNS service for free. It doesn't offer to specify a port number. |
|
 | reply to leeanator5 well, i don't really need to use Dyndns.
I have a domain name registered under GoDaddy so I can just have the domain.com forwards to me.no-ip.com:8080 because I set up a Dynamic DNS to help prevent outages in case my IP Changes and i'll be set. |

 | reply to leeanator5 ba ha. they did port blocking on me Today! |
|
 | reply to leeanator5 i signed up to just say that this is absolute bullsh!t, i have a buisness 2.5 acount in my office and they are treating me like a child, i dont have time to switch everything over to different ports, or have some port forwarding crap in the background doing it for me. my monthly telus bill for the office is 90, as we host an old domain off them as well, and now that we have the new domain hosted in the states (psekhosting.com) with a host that is always their, 99% uptime, and CHEAP! we are slowly weeding out our old .ab.ca domain in favor for the .ca domain.. This makes the process a hell of alot harder, and telus could have emailed this change of service out to us, and told us, that yes. tommorow any external smtp acsess will cause you errors, please use our smtp servers for that. or some crap to that extent.
I am not happy, so i called shaw (yes i know they are not any better) but for $60/month i get 3mb down 640 up, next day scs and basic cable in my building (yes finally can use the good old tv tuner card), no blocked ports, so i save $30 a month on internet alone and get tv. Then i can cancel the phone like that i had dedicated to the dsl modem (i use sprint for all my long distance and local calling, only used telus cause i had to) and save another $35-40 ... so all in all im saving $70 a month, and im not treated like a child....
My question to you guys, is: Is Telus limiting their service to us (because blocking ports i feel is limiting my internet service) grounds for them not properly fullfilling their end of the agreement which i signed 3 years ago? |

 | reply to leeanator5 Has this hit anyone in the Lower Mainland yet? Seems like it's still only in Alberta...I seem to be able to use my home dev servers okay. |

Yeroc join:2004-07-14 Calgary, AB | reply to leeanator5 I too just got hit with this (Calgary) without warning. I'm a computer geek and am running a personal linux firewall with my own website and mail server. No significant traffic so that shouldn't be a concern for Telus. After talking to Telus the only option for me is to upgrade to their Business Server package at $85/mo!! I activated it so I can get my email again but I'm switching to Shaw... Why can't they offer a geek-friendly service?!? It's not like I'm using up lots of bandwidth or anything. I can understand blocking outgoing port 25 to prevent viruses from spreading... but why block incoming port 25 and 80?!? And why is my only option a $85 plan for something that's just for personal use?
Grr...
Good bye Telus. |
