Well... on Father's Day, I got a ton of gift cards for Best Buy, and I put them to good use...
I got myself an 8X Pioneer 107 DVD-R/RW...
Popped it in the Quicksilver this morning, and voila!, a brandy new Superdrive.

hey J, I was thinking about getting that one as well. Even though the double layers are coming out this summer, media is at around $6, which is CRAZY.

Open case, 4 screws to remove the optical drive cage, detach cables, slide out old drive, slide in new drive, reattach cables, put in 4 screws, close case.
That simple.

I think the hardware isn't the limitation... OS X is... If you have OS 10.3.3 or higher, it will be fine.

Cool, John...I popped a Pioneer 104 in an old 500mhz G4 at work in about 5 minutes, then it recognized it as a Superdrive. Very easy |

If I were to buy an external DVD writer for my powerbook (which currently has a combo drive), would I have all of the functionality as if I had bought a superdrive to begin with? I thought I remembered hearing that iMovie wouldn't burn movie DVDs that could be played in a DVD player if the DVD drive wasn't an apple superdrive. |

You would lose "iApp" capability... You could still use Roxio's Toast to burn and author DVD's, but iDVD would be off-limits...

Some things to add...
I have a G4 450 "Sawtooth" running an updated Panther and it (a) took the 107D fine and (b) even let me burn with iDVD (there's supposed to be a 733 min. requirement). It was a jiff to install -- there are good guides on Apple's web site (search for "Customer-Installable Parts Instructions").
Also, I wanted to mention that burning from iDVD to an external/firewire superdrive is now possible using the "Easter Egg" (really a hack) -- Google "idvd easter egg" and it's the third link that comes up. You can also "burn" to a disk image with this hack. |

Huh . . . I was able to get it working after a couple of tries. i remember that there was a trick to it that wasn't explained very well where the downloads were located. Let me see if I can figure out what the trick was. Now, I wasn't trying to work this with an external; but I am able to get the special screen to popup and select to make a disk image instead of burning to the 107D. I'll be back.... |

We tried iDVD 2/3 External hacks. we never tried the burn to image "hack". |

8x media is too expensive... 4x media is just right.
