| [Xtreme] Bellsouth.net Is CENSORING!!
I just upgraded to Extreme 3.0, and I love it BUT I am getting censored trying to send mail other than bellsouth! How dare they censor me or anyone for that matter! I PAY for service with them, and I pay for my spamarrest.. and it aint that cheep, altho money isnt the issue. Its MY right to use any and all mail servers of my choice! If this calls for a class action so be it! I'm seeing blood red with anger, that they did get away with this stuff.
hey bellsouth this is 2004, not 1004 we as grownup still have a choice! |

| reply to MistressR I am now not able to send mail from any other ISP. ONLY bellsouth.net I have other accounts that I PAY for, which is MY choice. I use spamarrest to give me the option as to what emails I keep and which I send to the flusher. Im a big girl I dont need someone telling me I HAVE TO use their service, and I am not permitted to use any other accounts. THATS BS!
and btw: I am NOT a newbie as you put it, I have been on the net since 1996 |

Port 25 blocking is not that uncommon now a days with all the spam zombies. Have you contacted them about running the MTA on an alternate port? If you're a paying customer they should. It doesn't take 10 minutes to setup. |

Interesting. YOU agreed to a residential contract that had an Acceptable Use Policy that specifically states that you are NOT permitted to run any mail server you wanted. »home.bellsouth.net/csbellsouth/s···thorized "altho money isnt the issue"
Since it is not an issue you are well within your rights to upgrade to a business class account where you can run and use any email server you choose. |

| reply to MistressR It's not censorship. It's called Network management and security. Port 25 is locked down to only their mail servers.
»[General] Bellsouth Blocking Port 25 SMTP - WHY ????? said by wolfmanrobby :
You can thank all of your "Friends" who don't take care to properly secure their PC's for this.
Please, read this article -> »www.boston.com/business/technology/art.. Home PCs big source of spam Study says 80% of junk e-mail is relayed innocently
By locking down port 25 to all servers EXCEPT their own, then they can verify that all email sent from their system has been validated as being from a subscriber of their service.
People want a solution to the volumes of SPAM out there. Well, this is really the best an ISP can do. Filtering inbound SPAM is not the solution. What is better? A bullet proof vest, or taking the guns from your enemy?
With SPAM filters, you run into legit email getting blocked, and SPAM still getting through. Not to mention all the extra traffic all the SPAM puts on the networks as it bounces around.
Buy blocking outbound port 25 traffic, Bellsouth has cut the chance of SPAM on their network.
This will lead to much less packet traffic (Meaning better ping times for you gamers), more stable mail servers, and the general public getting many less adds to increase the size of their Boobs/Manhood.
I hope this help s you understand what will be a MINOR inconvenience for some will benefit all of us in one way or another ....
Think about it. If every ISP/Mail provider did the following.. 1) locked down port 25. 2) forced Authentication on their Mail servers. 3) Closed every Open relay
We would see at least a 50% drop in the volume of spam at no cost to the ISP / Service providers. I would not be surprised if that number went to as high as 75%.
This is one of the other reasons BS does not allow Mail servers on Residential accounts. Most people have no clue how to secure that server, a bot finds it and bounces a crap load of SPAM off of it. Sure, there are quite a few of us that could set up a very safe, secure mail server with no problems. But, for every one of us that knows what they are doing, there are at least 100 people who only THINK they know.
Sorry people, but it's for the greater good! Bellsouth has to worry about what's best for EVERY user, not just a few that want port 25 open, or to run their own servers.
So many people whine because ISP "X" allows this, and allows that. Well, if those people would follow any of the IT / Networking security news, they would find that the biggest amounts of SPAM and Virus proliferation originate from those very same ISP's that allow such things.
....
There are several ISP's that offer DSL just like you are saying - No restrictions, no port blocking.
Guess what? Those are the sources of the most Virus and SPAM emails. OR did you not read that article I linked to?
The Principal here is this: Bellsouth OWNS the network. You pay for the right to ACCESS it. Bellsouth has MILLIONS of customers that they have to do what is the best for the greatest amount of.
What makes anyone think they are so special that they can tell the ISP's how to run the ISP's network? Remember, you are one of Millions of customers. OK, so there may be a few thousand people effected by this. Guess what, it's still less than 3% of the subscriber base.
If you don't like it, take your business elsewhere, or open your own ISP

The OP doesn't say anything about having her own mail server. I'm assuming she has a paid email account through spamarrest.
So to the OP, either you have to go through bellsouth.net mail server OR you need to use alternate port to spamarrest |

I pay for a couple of other servers to handle my mail. But, I understand that all traffic on Bellsouth's network is THEIR responsibility. So, I relay the outbound mail through their SMTP server.
It has NO effect on my inbound mail that still comes in from those other mail providers.
Using your own words, you CHOOSE to use other services. That is you choice, but realize that it is NOT Bellsouth's responsibility to accommodate you in that matter. They are an ISP, not a raw connection provider. Don't want the restrictions they place on their service, then find another ISP, or get a raw T1 line or upgrade to Business class. -- If TCP/IP handshaking was less formal, SYN/ACK would be YO!/SUP! |

You are also new to the Internet, no? Other national ISP's have been blocking port 25 for years. IIRC, Mindspring (Earthlink) started this activity at least four years ago. |
