[Help Me] DI-624 as AP and switch

So here is what I'd like to do: Setup my DI-624 as a wireless access point and switch, without using the router/gateway functions. I've tried pretty much all the different combos of functions, but cannot get it to work. The setup will be:
DSL Modem==>Gateway (older Homeportal 100)==>4 port switch==>ethernet cable==>DI-624==>cable to 2 desktops and
wireless to laptops.

I've turned off PPPoE and turned on dynamic DHCP on the 624. Should the cable running to the switch/gateway in the basement be plugged into the wan socket, or any one of the 4 switch sockets on the 624?

Of course, this setup may just simply not be possible.

I've gotten the Homeportal gateway to "see" the 624, but no internet connectivity from the 624 to any computer via cables.

Cheers!
Don

Re: [Help Me] DI-624 as AP and switch

Alas, I have tried a similar config, trying to use the DLink as an AP/Switch, to no avail. DLink says it works, and a lot of good people here have offered some great ideas, but I haven't gotten it to work.

My config is different, I have two 624's, one used as a normal router, and the other as the AP/Switch. It seems to work for a while, usually for an hour or so then craps out...no wireless connectivity.

You config is a bit different and you might try turning OFF DHCP on your 624. You might have two DHCP servers on your subnet, which could cause problems.

Hi Steven,

I have tried turning off DHCP server, but no joy there either.

Cheers,
Don

I've been using mine for months as an AP and switch. You are hooking the devices LAN port-to-LAN port, right?

First I connected directly to the 624 via a LAN port, then changed the IP to be in the 192.168.123.XXX range my old barricade uses. Also disabled DHCP since the barricade does that already. After a reboot, I was able to connect wirelessly with multiple devices and I have one machine hard-wired into it. I also set the WAN to a made up static address so it wouldn't try to get an address.

Only problem I have is the quick reboots every time a phone rings

kb6183 is indeed correct. We have 14 of these turkeys running as AP's and switches without difficulty (except for the known problems).

Should DNS relay be turned on or off? I still cannot get this to work! Also, when you use a made up WAN static IP, it asks for DNS IP,etc. Do you just make these up too?

Cheers,
Don

Don't use the WAN port, and make up an static IP for your WAN port that you know that you will never need/use.

Once you do that, I just turned on ICS on my WinXP computer and it's handing out IP's to everyone, wired or not.

Yes, I made the whole static thing up. Attached are screenshots that may help you.

Thanks for all the help! I'll continue to work on this. My understanding is that by disabling the DHCP functions, the 624 cannot function as a switch. I have gotten my Homeportal router/gateway to assign the 624 an IP address, and have put that in as a static IP. I'll concentrate on getting the AP part to work, and maybe just forget trying to also use it as a wired switch as well, unless someone has some more ideas there. I still do not know what to do with the "Virtual Server" setup screens in the 624 admin software.

Cheers,
Don

Mine works perfectly well as a switch.

Makes me think you're hooking up the WAN port of your 624 to the other device. You have to hook them up LAN port to LAN port to use like I am.

It may work the way you describe, but I think you'll then have two separate networks tied together.
