| Weird BitTorrent problem
I use BitTorrent to grab live Dave Matthews Band shows (100% legal). I'll load up a torrent and it will start going for about 10 minutes, then my connection will die. The torrent will drop to 0kb/s and I'll try to load up a webpage to see if the connection is still there and no webpages will load. Then I have to unplug the modems power for a second and plug it back in and my connection is back instantly. If I do not use BitTorrent this problem does not happen. Anyone else notice this problem when using BitTorrent or maybe have a suggestion? It happens everytime. I'll usually have to reset my modem to get my connection back maybe 7 or 8 times to get an entire torrent. |

If you are running at 256k up, set the torrent to 10-16k. If you are running at 128k up, set the upload to 8-12k. That may help. |

| reply to HolyShirt I have the same problem too at times. Decreasing the upload does seem to help increase my download speed. I have 128 up right now and keep my upload at 10k and 2-5 uploads at a time.
What is also funny is that when this happens to me, the connection will be lost for approx 10-30 minutes then picks back up.
Azureus which is a bit torrent client actually has an option to click on if you are having trouble. Try that out. |

| Charter has just recently cracked down on torrents, they're limiting network bandwidth on the default torrent port (forget what that is exactly). Using Azureus (the only client I'm really familiar with) you may go to View > Configuration, click on "Server" to the left and change "Incoming TCP listen port" to 49555. I saw a dramatic speed increase almost right away... |

I heard a rumour regarding traffic shaping with torrent's, and this is the second time I've heard it. Maybe it is a per market thing.
Generally, the old the torrent the worse it is; the newer (and the more popular) the better it is. So old stuff is just going trickle in, because there are so few seeds. |

| reply to HolyShirt It has nothing to do with Charter. It's a modem issue involving too many connections causing the HFC-ETH bridge to crash therefore stopping all packet fowarding between the modems bridge.
It is prevalent in certain Linksys/RCA/and Motorola Surfboard Firmwares. -- Forum Posts:5004 |

| reply to HolyShirt Thanks to all the responses to my question. I've really just kind of stopped using torrents for now. I'll definetly try to lower my upload and see if that does the trick. I think I was maxing out my upload. As for Charter limiting torrent ports, I dont have a problem reaching the max download rate on a nice torrent. The problem is after a few minutes the connection just drops out and the download completely dies. Even if I shut BitTorrent down completely and just try to open up my browser or check email, its dead until I reset the modem. |

Read my response, it answers your issue.
And Yes some firmware revisions of the linksys are effected. I'm not sure about the BEFCMU10 as i'm not at work, but the BEFCMU10v2 is affected in all firmware versions below 1.0.7 -- Forum Posts:5004 |

| reply to Noryn 2-5 uploads at a time and only have 128 upload. Might as well not even share in my opinion. I ALWAYS have it set to allow just 1 upload at 12k, in the case of your upload cap, unless I actually find somebody cool enough to trade with, then there is SOME spare bandwidth to do 2 uploads and not make each upload crawl at a snails pace. |

| I usually use Burst and the fewest uploads you can have are 2 and the lowest upload cap is 10. When I do more than that my connection just goes out, and java doenst work on my computer for some reason so I can use Azerus.
To the original poster I would really encourage you to try Azerus and the option for internet connect problems is chosen by default. |

| reply to HolyShirt Qumahlin you were exactly right. I found a ton of people talking on forums about the problem with this modem. BitTorrent and many other apps are effected by the bug in the BEFCMU10v2 modem. The worst part about it is there is no way for you to update the firmware yourself. Charter would have to do it from thier side. (From 1.06 firmware to 1.07) Nobody I read was having any luck in getting thier ISP to update them. I think I'm looking at a new modem here |
