 Be Careful Sharing/Downloading on LimeWire

I received a letter from my cable company saying that Limewire was informed by MPA and some music companies of the files I had been sharing and downloading. The cable company said that they were not going to discontinue my service because they knew I was not using the service to sell what I download. They did however tell me that there are undercover people working with Limewire to help catch people downloading anything copyrighted, tradmarked and such. These companies do not care if it it for your own person use. Just thought I would pass the word and let you guys know that you have to be careful who you share your files to and also who you download from, because both actions are being monitored. The MPA (Motion Picture Association) has told my cable company that they are in the process of filing actions against people. Just be careful b/c some cable/dsl providers may cut you off of their service.

i guess that's the plan of attack against p2p networks - knock down everyone who's trading by going after their ISP...

this is just getting silly now.

I just use Mirc to do download my files. I can find full albums a lot easier.

Which cable company told you about being contacted by the MPA. Cause the only one that has been open about it is @Home(in the press anyways)

Road Runner from Oceanic Cable is the one that told me about it. They called me and also sent me a letter regarding the matter. I was also given the option to get a copy of the letters that were sent to them from MPA and the other companies.

Great.

I have RR with TimeWarner cable. I wish I was a freaking lawyer and my only job was to sue EVERYONE.

LOL.. thats the funny thing, I only had LimeWire for half a day and uninstalled it after realizing I liked BearShare better. However, now I wont use any. I dont want my cable company to keep getting letters about what I am uploading, or downloading. Sooner or later they may get fed up and disconnect my service

Yes, your company will be held liable since they are provided with the IP.. then I am sure once they get a notice they will try to find out who was downloading what and when...

BTW, where do you work? Never knew of any company that allowed its employees to download anything onto thier computers.

Where do you think all the people with the lightning fast T1 connections are? I don't know anyone who has $3000 to burn every month just for broadband.

They were tracking which files you shared?

I was just fixing to ask a question (start a new thread) about how to share with Limewire behind a router. My DSL is behind a NAT and seems like no matter what I do, folks just can't get to those old tunes.

I have a stand-alone machine on @home with Limewire (no firewall, NAT or protection at all...just a monthly re-format ) and lots of people seem to want, among others, that obscure 101st Airborne tune that my brother got off Napster. So I know that people are seeing my shares

I would like to share on the DSL line but can't (because of the router thing). I CAN share on the cable, but, now I'm hearing that the cable company is tracking my shares. Are they really? I'm not being sarcastic, this is an honest question.

Honestly, if they are going to bust me for sharing Rocket88 and a 'Soldier's Song'...

It wasnt my cable company tracking my files, but other companies through Limewire, MPA and other companies with the music industry were tracking which files I shared AND what files I was downloading also. They then sent a letter to my cable provider with a list of the files I was sharing and downloading. So, just be careful. I had Zone Alarm but they were still able to track my IP.

Bring the bastards on! If they can even monitor what is going on file transfer wise at my place of business or at my home.

You can download anything you want. Anything you want. If you own it, you can download it. Legally, how can they prove this? Do I need a receipt from 1975 for my Physical Graffiti album by Led Zeppelin? I threw it away years ago and the ink faded away rendering it no longer legible anyway. Does this mean I can't listen to the album anymore or even record it to another medium? A medium like a cassette tape, or my hard drive?

Do I have to front some money to my friend if he tries to play a CD that I don't own in my car? God forbid thine ears fall upon the harken spectacle of sounds too unfamiliar with thine own ears.

I don't care how many files you download. If you are not selling this crap for a profit, you are advertising it. The Gravy Train riding executives should have to pay us for promoting the tune.

How come a radio station gets to distribute a song to the public? Does each listener require a license to be able to listen to the 15 songs played over and over again? O-Town still sucks by the way. Oh that's right, they pay money to the suits at the major record label offices. This seems fair and just to the creators of the music, who see less than 2% of any revenues earned.

Think about this. I would NEVER buy a particular song that has been placed in my cerebrum through money making advertisements via a radio station or a theme from television. I'm weak so this is entirely hypothetical in nature. If I can obtain a close rendition of the song, I might like to hear it a time or two, no matter how annoying it may be. I may even grow to like it. However, if I whistle this tune at work, I don't expect to have the RIAA come after me for stealing.

I would never purchase some of the music I have downloaded. If I couldn't download it, I'd go without it. How many songs would I have bought if I couldn't download it? This is extremely subjective. And what if it were every song I received through a file sharing program? How can anyone prove this? I'm not turning over a buck for the media or my own personal gain.

Limewire and friends can go straight to hell. What is their case against me? Do they expect a jury to think I would have bought EVERY single song that is on my hard drive or CD-R that can be found in my possession without a receipt or other proof of ownership? This is completely ludicrous. Most of the people they are after can't and don't have enough money to cover a tenth of one of the many lawyers involved in a case like this. Many alleged perpetrators are legally considered children. They could easily spend this money on something a bit more constructive. Everyone knows we just can't get enough of that dimwitted virgin called Britney Spears.

And what about me? Why won't someone please pay ME to hear some bullshit jingle. I was just minding my own business in a public or private place when all of a sudden I was aurally attacked by such inane musical BS that it's not even possible to describe. You know the repetitive tunes I speak of. They can be worse than crack. Do I have a rock solid case against Otis Elevator or what?

Maybe so, but I find that there is too much waiting in MIRC. Depends on where you go though. What networks do you guys hang out on?

I was at a seminar at CES this past winter and the RIAA rep said that the radio station pay the artists (through the record companies of course) each time one of their songs is broadcast on the radio. I remember it being on the order of 10 to 25 cents each time. So think about all the Britney Spears tunes that get played around the country every day and pretty soon she gets real money!
