Only problem is any and all p2p is SLOW !

Hi. I have a nagging problem using any and all p2p clients.
I have a Netopia Cayman 3347 W router and am running win xp with an AMD athlon 2100+ at 1.73 Ghz and 768 RAM. I have a 768/128 connection to Swisscom Bluewin (yeah I'm in Switzerland) and after having run all my isp speed tests and observing download speeds from the web, I KNOW that I'm downloading at a 70 KB\s minimum.

However, whenever I try to use (pick any of the following) EMule, EDonkey, Kazaa, KazaaLite, Diet K, Shareaza, Bittorrent or Azureus, my download speed NEVER tops 5 KB\s. My uploads go at 15 KB\s if I let them. So they are using all available bandwidth but never the downloads. This is independant of how many sources I have per file (e.g with Shareaza, often more than 500).

I have tried forwarding ports, adjusting settings, downloading new server lists, I have no firewall, and the only thing I cannot bloody do with this router is download a single file from a p2p client. Even having one open without downloading slows down I.E until it becomes unusable.

I've run out of ideas. Maybe someone can help. Thanks.

are you trying to upload at the same time? if you max out your upload, you lose download speed since you cannot ACK the packets quick enough.

also, have you tweaked, especially your MTU?

are you sure that the remotes you are connecting to are not overloaded or limiting their upload?

and finally, have you scanned for virii and spyware with updated tools?

Checked over everything I can think of.

To date I have :

Checked over my whole system with Norton Anitvirus (updated of course) and with Spybot S&D. I have Spyware Guard running as well as Norton Systemworks 2004.

I have used the tools section to run all speed checks and so on. No problems to report there.

I have just run Dr. TCP MTU is at 1472 (normal for a Router PPPoE right ?)

I am connected to an average of 100+ remotes per file non stop over a period of several days. Even if I were queued to the "n"th degree I would still make it up the list after a while it would seem.

But the weirdest thing is that even if I just have Edonkey, or Shareaza or whatever on, but NOT active, it slows down my browser. If I've got Shareaza open without any downloads or uploads going, no search list, nada, I still have to wait 7 minutes at last count for Google to open.

sounds to me like you need to try another pc. your machine may have a problem. have you tried uninstalling ALL file share programs and reinstalling them?

cleaned out regular

yeah. I wiped out everything at one point.
Thing is, I only install and use one at a time. i've just run through the whole list of available programs.
It's just the selective aspect of this that gets me.
Http and ftp both work fine. 70 KB\s no sweat.

But having the same generalized slowdown irrespectively of which program... that's a bit odd isn't it ? I mean Bittorrent doesn't have anything in common with Kazaa for example and yet it does exactly the same thing.

Do you have NAT enabled? If so, what ports do you have open for BT?
