| Transitioning from AOL DSL
Greetings!
I'm helping friends transition from AOL DSL here in St. Louis to SBC. Silly to keep spending $54.95 (yikes). I'm looking for advice from anyone who's been down this road.
It gets confusing:
When they first moved in, they established a listed phone # for voice and an unlisted for 56K dialup. I'm not 100% sure of when, but they cancelled the second line (it's no longer billed) when got AOL DSL, and it seems the DSL came in on the old second pair (unbundled?). The only thing plugged into that circuit was their Creative DSL modem from AOL.
Anyhow, something changed last week. Their modem stopped syncing, and I went over for a look. Suspecting their modem, I took my 5100 over. Suddenly, they now have only dialtone and no sync on pair #2, but surprise, they get sync on pair #1. They're only getting billed by SBC for pair #1 at this stage, and placing a call from pair #2 to my cellphone gives a caller-ID I've never seen - not the same as their old second line. Whatever - hopefully that's beside the point.
Anyway, frustrated with AOL tech support, they then made the decision to switch, and called SBC and talked to someone who specialized in transitioning AOL subscribers to SBC - they didn't call AOL and cancel, so hopefully they've avoided a long delay while AOL thinks about releasing the line.
They ordered the $26.95 1500/256 deal, with a go-live of 7/7, and his 5100b arrived. I checked the stats with the 5100b, and it reports the line set at 384/128. The ISP transition hasn't happened yet - the XP PPPoE can still log in to AOL, and attempts to log as sbcyahooreg fail with an unknown-user message. I suppose this will get fixed around the go-live date.
Questions:
(1) will this AOL transition process set his profile properly to 1500?
(2) I assume that at some point the ISP switchover will occur, and that they'll be able to connect using sbcyahooreg, but probably won't get any notification of this?
(3) Will SBC send a cancellation to AOL, or is that something they need to do later?
Thanks! Pete |

| These are very specific questions, and I really couldn't tell you about #2 or #3... seems like the specialist they talked to shoud be able to answer #3...
As far as the first Q, the profile *should* get switched over, but SBC has a history of not properly setting profiles on lines when changes are made. If it doesn't go up to 1.5mbit after the cutover date, then call and ask for them to rebuild the line. You may have to ask for that in the SBC Direct forum, because the phone techs don't always get it, and will give you BS about unplugging your modem, etc. |

I made the transition from AOL DSL to SBC about 3 months ago. When I call SBC to do the ISP switchover, they told me I had to call AOL and put in a switchover request with them also. As I recall, the SBC rep told me that they were not allowed to complete the switch until AOL sent them notification that I had approved the change. I know I was left with the impression that SBC would not be able to set up my profile until they heard from AOL. So you may want to have your friends contact SBC again to see if the process is the same in St. Louis as it is here in Oklahoma City.
If you do have to contact AOL, be very specific with them that you are requesting an ISP switchover. AOL managed to screw up my request so I was forced to use dial-up for a week until everything got sorted out (but that was a small price to pay to end up with better speeds and a substantial savings on the monthly cost of service!).
Good luck! |

| reply to PFH Thanks, all - sounds like a plan. I'll have him post in SBCDirect if his speeds don't pop after his due date. I'll let him wrangle with AOL to get cancelled once his SBC service comes up.
Cheers... |

| Re: Transitioning from AOL DSL: SUCCESS
Thanks to everyone - their SBC due date came, and all of a sudden they were able to log on to sbcyahooreg. Plugged in their new SBC username into the 5100b and they were off and running. Speed profile was still at 384, but he called in, got a tech who had it fixed inside of 2 minutes, and is syncing just lovely at the 1.5 rate.
They still need to call into AOL and handle the account cancellation, but the line was transitioned just fine.
Cheers, Pete |
