Brand new building back by all the car dealerships. The building is so big that at first I thought it was a new movie theater.

Re: Frys come to Georgia

It is an electronics store. Each of the stores has a different theme. See: »www.frys.com/
I wonder what the theme for the store in Atlanta will be.

I will also be curious to see how well it does. We are saturated with electronic stores in the Atlanta area. The Gwinnett Mall area already has a bunch of them.

Re: Frys come to Georgia

From the website »www.frys.com/

Each store carries its own unique theme.

In Northern California:
- Sunnyvale's marble floors and grand piano elegantly display the history of Silicon Valley with hi-tech museum pieces
- Palo Alto brings you into Wild Bill's Wild, Wild West
- Campbell's ancient Egypt theme has a 20-foot sphinx and King Tut tombs
- Fremont is dedicated to the origins of electricity as featured at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago
- San Jose pays tribute to the first astronomers, the Mayans, with a setting from Chichenitza.
- Concord is the newest addition to the Bay Area market.

In Southern California:
- Fountain Valley hails the ruins of ancient Rome, complete with a flowing aqueduct
- Manhattan Beach takes you to Tahiti with sculpted lava tiki heads and its own rain forest
- Woodland Hills is a page out of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland storybook, with 10 to 15 foot high figurines of all the characters
- Anaheim places you on the NASA flight deck for the Endeavor Space Shuttle, complete with launches on big screen TV's
- Burbank pulls you back in time to the 1950's with a retro-space theme from Hollywood, complete with Martians and Gort, the robot
- City of Industry where the factory setting is a salute to the Industrial Revolution complete with oversized gears and cogs
- The mystical civilization of Atlantis is alive and thriving in San Marcos with numerous aquaticfeatures icluding a 7000 gallon aquarium with live sharks.

In Arizona:
- Phoenix features a giant serpent above the entrance which is emblematic of its Aztec design.

In Texas:
- Dallas' Lazy-K ranch is reminiscent of it's cattle ranching history
- Houston showcases the oil industry replete with a field of gushing oil derricks
- Austin is a tribute to the city's reputation as the "Live Music Capital of the World"
- Irving features a pictorial history of the community which was founded in the early 1900s and named after Washington Irving
- Plano depicts the city's evolution from a farming community to a modern-day urban center of commerce

In Nevada:
- the Las Vegas entrance welcomes customers with the world's largest slot machine and features a pictoral history of the Vegas Strip inside

In Washington:
- our Renton store features a historical depiction of the industrial evolution of the community with photographs of the Stetson Mill in 1911 and the originally-built Boeing plant in 1941.

Definently no. Stick to some cool historical things not georgia history lol.

This is the same thing that a movie theatre in Florida and couple locations outside of Florida. Themed Movie Theatres called Muvico.

No theatres here can beat theirs. Probably one of the things I miss since I moved from Florida.

Well I'm from Houston and as big as that town is we only got one Fry's, but it is worth the trip. I remember last year the day after Thanks giving there was a line to get in because it was filled to max capacity per the fire code.

I got the ultimate theme - and it's perfect, for Atlanta that is - The American Civil War - with a few iron cannon on old fashioned iron spoked carriage wheels placed outside, a Confederate Flag, a statue of Robert E Lee and Jefferson Davis, peanuts or goobers being sold with every Fry's purchase (LOL), and every woman employee at Fry's dressed as Scarlet O'hara ! And every male employee ? Well they just have to do their best to sport a Clark Gable mustache! Muhahahahahahahaaaa !:D

The Media Play building in Cobb is still available, hopefully they'll open up. Competition is tough, WorstBuy, Circuit City and CrapUSA all within a few blocks.

Speaking of opening up competition, there is also a BrandSmarts opening up this fall off 285 in Doraville. Yes, they do carry a lot of low-priced stuff, but also have good prices on audio, video and computer stuff. I think this is their first store outside South Florida.

I think they will regret the decision to open that store at Gwinnett place vs Mall of Georgia. That area is only going downhill.

I do not understand why they chose that location. Its becoming really economically depressed since TMOG opened.

Even with the The Mall of Georgia having opened, going by all the traffic I see in the area, I am not convinced that it is in a location that is economically depressed.

If that area is economically depressed, then I'd have to say the same about the Mall of Georgia area.

But maybe the better question would be: what can you [I] do to NOT make it economically depressed?

The address of the Gwinnett Place Fry's is:
3296 Commerce Ave NW Duluth GA 30096

Are you sure that's not the old General Cinemas building (behind Sears)? That picture sure looks like it.

I'm glad they've located there and not Mall of Georgia; that will be much more convenient to most of Atlanta than MOG -- I certainly wouldn't trek up to MOG very often for small electronic components. They also probably got a lower lease on the building/land.

Re: Frys come to Georgia

I too have not been to the Mall Of Georgia (MOG)
I come down to Atlanta at least 1 a month. And it is like about a 3 hr drive just going down but round trip is like 6 hr.

Gromit2

@mindspring.com

I got there at ~7pm and picked up the FAR ATX case, 430W PS, and GMRS radios. Would have loved to have gotten the fax machine, but those were gone. The rebate forms were all printed by the cash register.

Yes, the place is huge. But as I drove out tonight, I went by the old theater -- next door. The Fry's building is new, and is at least twice (possibly 4x) as large as the theater (was it an 8-plex? it's been so long, I don't recall).

Their ad in Thursday's Atlanta paper was the entire section B -- 8 pages, not just an insert. They spent a lot of $$$ on the building, so it's no wonder they haven't opened stores in more cities.

The registers use barcode scanners. I read on an anti-Fry's website that they didn't (referring to a California store, I think). Is that still the case there? They didn't ask to see my ID to pay with a credit card, either (as was also reported on that site).

All in all, it was a very pleasant shopping experience, except for the crowds. I went without a shopping cart as long as possible to be able to move around more easily.

I hit there last night on my way home from work. I had been looking at a Sony DVD changer. Best Buy had it for $159. Fry's outpost.com website had it for $99. Fry's had it on the shelf for $159, like BB. I mentioned the web price on the unit, the sales guy checked with his manager, and I purchased the player for $99. They did try to push the extended warranty, but not to the point of being obnoxious.

Like someone else said, this place is HUGE! It's like you laid a Best Buy next to a Circuit City, then put a micro center and a Comp USA in front of it. I have never seen a selection of electronic equipment under one roof like this place. I plan on going back after the crowds subside and just roam. They also have a cafe in the middle of the store, so your wife can sit and read with a latte while you drool.

Unbelievable rebate deals if you get there soon enough...I'm here on business for a few weeks...went in looking for a soundcard, which I got real cheap. Also got a new software called Audio Xtract that was on display with a rebate. I fired it up right away at home and it's amazing. I recorded about 300 MP3s from 5 internet radio streams at once. Has anyone else used this yet...I'm lovin' the free tunes! I heard they are opening a store in Chicago, too, if they haven't already.
