4 edits | The Art Thread
Emboldened by the success of »The Weekly Photo Club and »The Wallpaper Thread, I'm ready to start a new one.
It seems to me that, although the primary focus of the DI forum has been photography, there are a lot of artists here, as well. The most visible is the wonderful DSmithlady. The idea is to regularly post your artwork to this thread.
What is art?
Boy, if you could answer that one, you'd settle an argument that's been going on for a few centuries. For the purposes of this thread, however, the answer is simple: If you think it's art, then it is.
Besides the fact that it needs to be your own work, there is only one rule:
It can't be an image straight out of a camera. Whether you've scanned a traditional print, or downloaded a digital image from your camera, you must do more than just crop, adjust the colors, or any of the other simple, standard things. You must have done something artistic with it.
So, if you are a traditional artist who scans or photographs your work, a photographer who folds, spindles, and mutilates their images with Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop, Painter, Gimp, and tonnes of plug-ins and actions, or if you create digitally with Maya, Poser, Terragen, 3D Max, Vue d'Esprit, and the like--this is the place for you.
Post as many as you want, and as often as you like.
It would be nice, but not necessary, if you give some details about what you post. If it is traditional work, it'd be interesting know if it's pastels, pen & ink, acrylic, etc...and maybe even what kind of canvas you used. For digital work, mention the program(s), plug-ins, filters, actions, scripts, etc. Since it's often a complex task creating work of this sort, asking for the full details might be asking for a little too much....If it is a reworked photo, it'd be helpful to see the before and after.
To start us, here's a very simple example:

Which was this image:

If you are interested in this kind of work, you might also enjoy these sites: artSIG, deviantART, or, to some extent, photo.net.

[edit] I've had a few folks asking how I created the effect in this pic so here's the lowdown that was in one of my replies: -------------------------------------------------------------- This is one of those where I just started doing different things and when I got to a point where I liked it I stopped. The main two modifications were from the buzzPro2 plugin and an action called "Slap-Dash 4" that I got from a fellow named Mike Finn over at dpreview.com. When I got the look I liked I added a layer mask to get the feathered edge. I did some Levels, Curves and Saturation adjustments in between some of those steps....I'm pretty sure I couldn't duplicate it again, but maybe could get close just going by the look. Some day I'll remember to record these things into actions! Also added the sig at the bottom with a Wacom Intous2 tablet. |

| reply to climbers Just after sunset on Manisota Key, Florida on July 3. There was a pretty impressive storm south of us and I was trying to get some shots of the interesting "deck" at the house to the south of us. I was backlit form the sunset, which gave a really great, warm glow to the objects around me while the incoming storm added a nice coolness off in the distance.
The photo was interesting, but giving it a painterly look really brought out the mood to me.

Oh yeah, don't ask what I did to get this. I've no idea. About 40 or 50 tires, various filters and actions, etc. |

| reply to climbers Very nice work so far everyone! Great thread climbers ! Nice to see more "artistic" versions of photos.. Photo manipulations are awesome to look at.. Take much more talent and skill to "digital darkrooom" then to just snap a shot.. and to be honest I think that Editing talent is as important as knowing photography even with normal pictures.. it can mean the difference between a "nice shot" and "WOW!" in my opinion. -- "We are all just Plagiarists of a real Artist, and her name is Mother Nature." 1 edit | reply to climbers Another heavily processed file. Just a quick snap of a flower. Again, not really a noteworthy photo, but not bad either. I would tell you what I did to get this effect, but I'm developing an action based on it. The swirly effect was generated with two layers at 50% overlaid onto the "main subject" layer. They were made with noise, motion blurs (90deg and 0deg), and liquefy.
