dbirdmanPremium,MVM join:2003-07-07 Eureka, CA kudos:5 | DW6000 reset utility There has been a recent rise in people reporting that their DW6000 stops browsing after 1, 2, or 3 days, with a reset needed. I don't have an answer, although I lean toward the possibility that the internal proxy is hanging up.
What I can do is make it easier to reset the modem. I've written a free utility which you can download from »www.datastormusers.com/reset6000.cfm
This utility doesn't do anything new or dramatic, it just makes it easy. It telnets into the modem, issues an "rr" command, and exits.
Thanks to Scott (Dustyfoot) it has had an early round of 6000 testing. It worked from the beginning, but it took a few revisions to get out of a program error that would occur as it exited.
The program provides no feedback - you get your feedback from the modem lights. I went that way because I wanted it to be truly one-click, with no window, no button to click to exit, etc.
Feedback and bug reports always welcome. -- XP Pro | G11 | 1350 | 4020 Plus II | Datastorm Mobile |

Not good. First I need to find out if that is a repeatable problem. If some of you others that have tried it could attempt to telnet in afterwards it would be great. -- XP Pro | G11 | 1350 | 4020 Plus II | Datastorm Mobile |

Don -
I don't think there's a problem...
I ran your reset utility and then immediately opened a telnet session to 192.168.0.1 1953 and entered "rr". It all worked fine.
The way I read suntken34's post... He's saying that when his DW6000 stops working, he can't telnet to it. He has to unplug it... Or reboot Windows

 | reply to dbirdman Hi Don,
Thanks again for your efforts. They greatly benefit the satellite Internet community.
During testing today, I tested the app each time on three different DW6000s. Sometimes I ran the app two or three times in a row on the same 6000. I never got a hang. |

| reply to dbirdman It worked fine for me, I placed a shortcut icon down into the quicklaunch taskbar, and although I havent tried that yet, (the wife would only allow one reset this evening I cant see why it wont work there and it is something that DW should have set up from the get go.

Whew. I'm sorry he has that problem, but I can see that it does look like I misread it. Had me looking at the code and scratching my head trying to figure out how it could be holding a telnet session open through a reset! -- XP Pro | G11 | 1350 | 4020 Plus II | Datastorm Mobile |

You wrote the code, and you are looking for a failure.. so that's how you read it.

Sorry bout the misread there, your software works like a charm when I'm not having "hang" issues. But when I need to use your software to fix my 6000 hang, it does not communicate with the unit. Neither does the command via HyperTerminal. So I'm still stuck with having to pull the plug on this thing or rebooting windows. Once again, your software performs as advertised. I don't know what the heck's wrong with my setup. -- DW6000CE w/ DirecTV (Kit A) | G4R/1370H ~75 | XP Pro SP1 | Windows Firewall On | P4 3.0 HT | 1 GB PC3200 | 120GB SATA |

| reply to dbirdman Now that its just a click of a mouse to be able to reset the modem, does anyone have any opinions as to what is too many resets? Would it hurt to reset once or twice a day if you feel that it betters your browsing? -- DW6000-CE | SatMex5 1050mhz |HP a620n 2.2G | Win XP | 2 XP PC Network via D-Link DSS 5+ switch |

FOCOne Wire join:2004-04-05 Rixeyville, VA | My opinion of resetting is: You cannot hurt anything by resetting somthing to much. Provided you are not in the middle of a software update/install. Then I think you could run into problems. But most if not all, those will come in the middle of the night when no activity is happening. Ofcourse, there will be other opinions and I could be wrong. My fear is that the NOC MAY shut your connection down if you do too many resets in a short period of time. Then you would have to call Support and jump through the hoops to get back up. Playing with the utility last night, I did 3 resets in about an hour's time with no problem.
You can probably do a reset once a day, but I would do it only as needed to clear a problem. When you do a reset you clear the DW6000's counter's and stored values such as X-pol isolation numbers, Number of Successful Transmissions, Number of Failed Transmissions, Frames Received, etc. Sometimes that info is handy to have.

dbirdmanPremium,MVM join:2003-07-07 Eureka, CA kudos:5 | When working on things I've sometimes done a dozen resets in an hour (4020).
When on the road it is not uncommon for me to deploy my dish 3-4 times per day, and each of those deployments involves a reset for lat/long update. I've never seen any indication that the NOC knows, or cares.
Even when stationary on road trips I usually have one "hard" reset per day because the modems are often off overnight to conserve battery power. -- XP Pro | G11 | 1350 | 4020 Plus II | Datastorm Mobile |
