I personally feel that IRC shouldn't be experiencing those "growths" that kazaa and BT are getting (or in some cases, had gotten :P ).

How I feel IRC should be kept is closed off from the "normal" users, so that there's a place for people like me to go and hangout without drawing too much attention. Then again that's my weirdo elitist complex or something. I'm sure someone will flame me for that.

I couldn't agree more.

The veterans are sequestering themselves in private keyed or invite only channels, most centered around trusted users who have been part of the circle for years and several good FTPs.

The DCC protocol is grossly inefficient. The channels which have public fserves are silly as the wait time is astronomical - a handful of servers try to service hundreds of people, that's to be expected.

No, IRC is about making contacts, not finding files.

IRC is useful for Internet Relay Chat nothing else.

Good thing I use DC hubs. It would be hard for the RIAA to even get into one.

It's not free though. A lot of the time at least.

yes IF there is sufficient bandwidth...... which there rarely is... it takes me usually more than 30 mins to get an OK speed on BT (more than 100k) and that just sucks.... id rather be in a xdcc queue for 20 mins and get 200k+ right off the bat

Not true at all. While some IRC networks do not show your IP or censor the end of it, if you are downloading (via dcc) from another computer your IP IS KNOWN! You never know who you are downloading from and they do have your IP.

But i believe by law once they offer it up for aa download whether it be via DCC IRC or what ever form of downloading there is they lose the rights to complain about it and sue since technically they are the holder of the copyright and they are the one allowing it to be uploaded.

Would sort of be like the pot calling the kettle black.

I have no trouble getting what I look for 9/10 times on IRC. You have to spend more than 30 seconds with it to realize how great it really is.

Everytime I've tried IRC it was an exercise in futility. The file server bots had huge queues which would take about half a day to finally get into a position where you could download something. And if it was a larger file that was split up into pieces, you could only queue maybe 3 of the 30 pieces at one time making it ridiculous to even bother trying to get a whole file. I admit I'm a n00b when it comes to IRC. Am I missing something or am I just on junky channels and lack the inside connections to find good channels?

"It's surprising that the RIAA has not applied much legal pressure on the increasing number of torrent related websites that direct users toward pirated software, films, and music."

They will now..... I can't believe that so many people, most if whom are illegally trading files via P2P networks, keep posting about, touting, and otherwise giving press to these networks that work best if kept somewhat under wraps...... I guess it is good for the RIAA and MPAA that no one will just shut up and down/upload files quietly.......

That's where newsgroups come in handy. Speed is always
maxed out, no queueing (except maybe locally on a user's
machine - most Usenet providers limit the number of
simultaneous connections), and no waiting a long time to
get what you want. Plus, you can leech all you want, and
not worry about the riaa, mpaa or bsa (unless you upload
copyrighted material of theirs using your ISP's news
server).

What I meant was the seeming unwillingness of veteran IRC users showing newbies the ropes.
IRC is very simple.. Its just hard for people to grasp you can download files using a chat program. This site gives all the help a newbie could ever need..

Would you show me the ropes?

I've been getting Fedora through the mirrors, maybe I should give BT a try. Anything more than 4k/s would be welcomed

Sorry, I'm busy

removed See Profile has written a great IRC faq here, check it out.

Everyone needs to just switch to IRC.

I suspect lots more would if it wasn't for the pompous attitude of many IRCers.

IRCers = RICers.
