This is actually old news... people have been reporting fiber lines going up in these areas (and Verizon has been publicly releasing PR's and photos of the Keller, TX area).

Unfortunately, the deployment area involves politics . (what's new)?

Nuff said, verizon does impress me with their combination of smoke, mirrors, and old copper lines.

They do impress me taking the initiative needed to grow into the future.

I like to read stuff like this and if they ever wire my area wishful thinking since i am one city over from their map. Id definitely pop for the 30 meg package just to show support. I also invest in Verizon as well So I have double interests

The areas they deploy too they have to be political about. NJ is notorious for causing Verizon losses on the costs of line sharing. So they are going for the bank books in the areas they don't have to worry about losing much money.

Now to go and find out how much a straight 2 mile piece of fiber will cost me to jump it off the next city over. makes me wonder If I want to order dsl now.

Another naysayer, Verizon could save your life and you would have an issue with the way it was done. Please research before posting, you can run a web server and service has already been deployed in Keller, TX. It been hammered to death on this board.

The speeds are nowhere near symmetric, and barely suprpass cable.. they need to kick it up a notch.. 15mbit for basic, 30 for intermetiate and 50 for the topnotch.. with no more that 50% less for upstream..

Emeril says kick it up a notch!
And that's not all-- cut the prices further for voice bundles!

True enough, but really, why can't they offer more upload speed? If they are stringing up the fiber what is preventing them from doing more upload?

Man you guys are whiners, don't use it then. Go to your other provider that offers 2-5 Mbps upstream.

dont know but if they do offer something like 15/15 or 30/30 i think that would cut from thier profits on ds1, ds3 lines and the such plus for residential use what is the point in offering such high uploads? so more people can torrent, kazza, p2p or whatever? if they do offer it im sure there will be some limits on it otherwise thier higher cost lines like ds1, ds3 will suffer.

so how are poeple supposed to use the net? is that 15mbps supposed to be for reading email and watching banner ads? what's wrong with "torrent, kazza, p2p or whatever"? what about running web, vnc, or vpn servers? multiple voip lines? video phones? or are those services also no-no's unless we're being charged extra for them?

theres nothing wrong with them, unless your just pirating more crap which is what most use them for. and i never said anything about running web, vnc, or vpn servers or anything about voip or anything like it. the only reason people want such high download and upload is mostly so they can pirate crap which is what i was really saying. hell i would even put up a couple of servers if i had that kind of bandwidth, but they are not going to do that because they want you to buy one of thier over prices lines instead.

Seriously. I'm getting shafted on base by Sprint - $38 for 500/128 (and the latency is equivalent to dial-up). Now I'm a speed freak too but I draw a line somewhere. I guess you will always have those people who will never be satisfied till they're surfing with their tits on fire and their harddrive barely able to keep up

Well, here's the first thing that's going to happen in 2004 if tney deploy those fiber lines, that $90 per month they get for their top package of VOICE service gets hammered to voip with no $12-20 per month in taxes and surcharges saving about $50 per month in overcharges, like $600 per year!!,
Next, content delivered cheap instead of full retail store price like charging $20 per audio cd in the 1990's and make you buy the whole thing..
Next, alacarte cable programming so we don't have to take channels that suck..If we don't want fox news channel, or abc or disney, than we don't buy it anyway because it's in the package.. and dont even try to overcharge us b/c it will backfire with re-streaming content at low bit rates.. so give us a fair deal or watch the new napster for cable tv(spring to life)!!
A fair deal, oh yea
one more fantasy thing.. can I get an independant candidate on the presidential ticket please, and no fries with that!
It's called fair deals and REAL competition.. vz had to cut their price because of an inferior product for years now-- don't think just b/c those cute red lettering trucks lay fiber that's overcharged for is going to make them alot of money.. try again--also it can't replace copper yet because we don't have long-term battery backedup voip(or video phone) hardware solutions yet--hint hint maybe 2006-2007 product lines, but not 2004

Who's talking.. a 10/1 guy.. No where near symmetric? Its surely more symmetric than your 10/1 cause its 15/2, To be equally symmetric as your connection it has to be 20/2.

well i doubt anything close to that will happen in 2004 since the year is half over already. 2005? maybe but before half of what your saying comes true fiber will have to be more widespread and at the cost per mile it is going to take awhile, by time fiber will finally be deployed on a large scale i will be too old to care or dead so im not going to hold my breath waiting for it.

Verizon has been installing fiber in my neighborhood all of this summer. I was wondering what it was all about, it seemed like a big investment for a neighborhood of 50 year old houses. I can't wait to see what they offer in terms of broadband and maybe digital cable. I'd love to tell Comcast to get stuffed or get my $100 monthly cable bill reduced. I live in Silver Spring MD about 10 miles from Capitol Hill and the Whitehouse, wonder if this has anything to do with this early roll out?:)

Verizon is going to blow One Source Communication out of the water! I have to pay them $50/month for 2mps. Get 5mps for $35 is a deal.
