Cayman 3300 Series Pinging Gateway Fails

Hello Everyone,

I have ADSL from Bellsouth and with this service I got the Cayman 3300 series router. I also have a Linksys WRV54G router which I want to use for establising a VPN tunnel.

This is the scenario:

I'm using the Cayman Router in Bridge mode and I'm using the Linksys WRV54G to do the PPPoE authentication. The Linksys WRV54G status page shows that is receiving a WAN IP address, a Gateway IP address and DNS ip addresses. From an internal computer i get ping replies from the WAN IP address but NOT from the Gateway IP address. In other words, I don't get Internet access. When I disable brisdge mode in the Cayman Router and I use the Cayman Router to authenticate thru PPPoE I'm able to get access to the internet without any problems.

I updated the firmware of the Linksys WRV54G router and spen few hours troubleshooting. I followed the instructions in the Netopia site on how to configure the Cayman router in Bridge Mode.

Is there something in the Cayman router when is in bridge Mode that is preventing the Linksys router from communicating properly with the ISP Gateway ?

Thank you for your inputs.

Pablo

see »Cayman Routers »How do I setup the Cayman in Bridge Mode? for the steps needed. the 3341 and 3346 vary slightly from this FAQ, but it is only in wording. the 3346-ENT is completely different.

the main thing is you MUST turn off NAT, set the WAN to RFC-1483, and enable bridging(not the same thing!)

I followed the instructions in the followiong url to convert the Cayman to bridge Mode:

In the instructions said that you have to Click on the WAN link that takes you to WAN IP Interfaces box. Click on RFC-1483 Bridged Ethernet vcc1,or on PPP over Ethernet vcc1
[as per your configuration]: "Uncheck" the Enable Interface box. Click on Submit. I think this disables NAT.

I followed Netopia's instructions.

I wonder if the ISP is only allowing the Netopia Cayman router do the authentication by checking at the MAC address.

Thank you for any inputs,

Pablo

no, bellsouth does not authenticate with the MAC, it is username/pw only.

did you remember to SAVE nad RESTART after making the changes?

also, many people forget to turn off the DHCP server. when your linksys pulls an ip, is it a 192.168.1.x ip? if so, then you missed this step.

to test and see if your cayman is truly in bridge mode, hook your machine to it and use a ppoe dialer, such as enternet or XP's built in dialer, to connect to the internet. if you can connect this way, then the cayman is configured properly and the linksys is the problem.

lastly, i would reset the cayman to factory defaults and start over. it could just be that you have a corrupt setting. to do this, mash in the reset button on the back for a few seconds, release it and power down the cayman. when you bring it back up, it will be just as it was when it came out of the box. then you can follow the instructions in the technote again. be sure to follow EVERY step!

@INNERHOST.NET

I haven tried to use an XP machine with PPPoE for testing purposes. I will try that. I also havent tried to reset the Netopia Cayman router to factory settings.

It just doesn't make sense to me that it was working and then suddenly it stopped working without making any changes to the Cayman router. I forgot to mention that I tried 2 different Linksys routers and same problem.

Thats why I thought it had something to do with the ISP and the MACof the Cayman router which was provided by Bellsouth. Some kind of mapping to the cayman MAC address.

I will keep troubleshooting and I will post my findings here.

Thanks in advanced,

Pablo
