Problem with lost packets AP-900+

I've been using 2 DWL-900AP+ with 2 14dBi Outdoor Directional Antennas since December. This past weekend I started having problems rendering web pages (only the top od the page would load). I found that my wireless link is dropping packets at one end like crazy.

I've already had to replace a faulty antenna and I'm suspecting that it has failed again. Can anyone help me prove or disprove my faulty antenna theory? I'm not in a position to do any physical test until next week-end (remote location)

If indeed the antenna has failed again, what could be causing this?

I have ruled out any type of interference or another AP in the area. I walked around (to and from point A&B) ant the interference in netstumbler never goes higher than -95dBm on the graph. This is a remote area and I would have been very surprise to find another AP and as expected there were none.

The lost signal does coninside with some excavation work that resulted in cutting the ground at PointB's location. The ground has been re-connected since. Could this have caused the AP at pointB to fault somehow? I have a spare DWL-900AP+ that I'll be able to try next week-end.

For those interested, here are some pictures of the setup. I would like to do a write-up of my work to get broadband to the last mile.

First, some historical posts for reference:
»Update on my wireless link to get broadband
»Lorex wireless camera and 802.11b :-(

Pings

Inside DWL-900AP+
Tonight I had someone go to the box and try to reset the the AP. He tells me it's pretty warm in the box and there is smell of burned silicon. He took the cover off and aired the unit. When he re-connected it I started to get more consistant pings.

I have a feeling the DWL-900AP+ in the box at the pole is fried. Probably overheated.

This is really strange to me. I have DWL-900AP+'s and DWL-2000AP+'s in simple "rainproof" 8x8x4 electrical junction boxes from home depot, out in the sun and rain and snow and hail and have only lost one -- from a lightning strike.

Do you have a UPS in the box with the cable modem and AP on the pole? If not, I would consider putting a UPS (even one of those APC UPS/power strip hybrids) in there, maybe with a second surge protector. Based on my experience with them and many weather conditions, I'd tend to blame it on the incoming power.

Thanks for the tip... There are no power protection what so ever as we speak. It could well have been a power fluctuation. I'll be sure to use a surge supressor on the new box.

Thanks for your tip

Vincent,

I had nothing to add to the thread in terms of advice, but wanted to compliment you on your well documented and illustrated posts. No one can read one of yours and ask, "What did he mean by that?"

Hope you get the AP humming again.

Thanks for the compliment! It's always nice to read about something well done.

As I mentioned earlier, I may be doing a short story on this and submit it to dslr.
