[Connectivity] Signal Drop in WA area

I've noticed this problem since late last Thursday and hoped it's not serious but I think it may be so.

The signal to my modem seems to drop and looses connection and reboots itself after 10-15 minutes of hard use. (opening multiple webpages, downloading, ect) If I leave it all alone it is able to maintain and hold connection till who knows when. Not really usefull since I want to use the connection not watch it do nothing.

Anyways I'm thinking that this sudden loss of connection may be due to a faulty piece of equipment on Comcast side but I want to get another opinion. Who knows, the string of really hot days lately could have done something.

I've done countless trace routes to websites and it seems my first hop from me always times out. Here's what I received from my last check and is what I've been getting since I started checking last Friday.

To also make sure it wasn't me I had a friend tracert to me and he shows the same problem. The last (my first) hop seems to time out.

This is what he got.

4 38 ms 36 ms 18 ms 24.16.12.116

I did a line test here the results show same thing.
Test I did today
»/speedresults/···/1461024

Test I did two days ago
»/speedresults/···/1462757

Now I'm going on that observation and say that it is related to why I'm periodically getting disconnected. If that first hop seems to not function correctly then it could affect the stability of my connection right? Anyone else agree?

I also did some searching and a few threads back that someone else in the NW was having disconnection issues every 10 minutes as well. They narrowed it down to some bad power levels. There were some Comcast crews out in front my neighborhood a few days before, maybe they fudged something up. So I went and found what I have and I really don't know whether they are good #'s or not.

These are my values.

Downstream Freq:633.00 MHz
Downstream Modul:256 QAM
Downstream Interleave:32,4,32
Downstream Rcv PwrLvl:-2dB

Upstream Freq:23.00 Mhz
Upstream Modul:QPSK
Upstream Symbol rate: 2560 ksym/sec
Upstream Trnsmt PwrLvl:41 dB

(BTW I got the 3com 'Sharkfin' Cable Modem if that helps)

Well I'm really at a loss on pinpointing the cause. The connection seems to die out only when trying to load more than one webpage. According to my AIM log file it disconnect every 10 minutes or so when the connection is in use. I don't know anyone else on my node or immediate area to confirm they too have this problem. Any ideas on what is up? Thanks all.

BTW, I am going to call Comcast up ASAP but it looks like it won't happen till late this week. Me = too busy = my loss =(.

What signals you show are good, but you don't show your SNR that i see.
Also where in Wa.are you?Your QAM is 256,mine here in Federal Way is still QAM64.

Been having the same problems for about a week. North New Jersey area...everytime I run a P2P program or play online multiplayer games, my connection drops and the modem reboots itself....dunno wtf is going on, but it's getting to be quite bothersome.

All my signal levels are fine, and I've had this service for about 5 years already, so I know what to look for...has to be problem on Comcast's end.

There is nothing wrong here...its just that some routers (its the CMTS in this case) ignore ICMP. If your first hop was truly timing out, you would have no connection since your packets couldn't go out over the network.

I copied it exactly the way it shows up on my modem config screen thingy.

256 QAM

Hope that makes sense.

I'm in the Woodinville, WA. Unincorporated KingCounty.

I see. Well I had a huanch about that.

I still puzzles me though why my modem will fail to continue to transmit anything after 10 minutes of use and then reboot.

Could be a bad modem. Try taking it to a friends house or borrowing a friends modem to see if the problem persists.

Hmmm...interesting. However I don't believe this is related to the other problems. This one kind of jumps out at me as a bad modem.

Will do about taking my modem to a friends house. I have a know someone like across the street but he aint getting back till end of the week. *sigh* guess i'll wait it out and see.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll get back with some more info as things develop.

*****EDIT*****

Well according to another post it turns out they changed the QAM to something else and there are issues they need to work out. Till the end of the month I shall wait.

Happening for me also (Kent, WA) It is getting very irritating the internet right now is pretty much worthless with this connect.

I'm glad to hear it's not just me.

For you does it just drop off for like 5-10 seconds have random modem reboots?

What kind of modem do you have as well?

I'm in the Kent, WA area and this has been happening to me and a number of coworkers. I haven't been able to get this resolved, but one of the coworkers did.

What you need to do is call from home then ask the 'Customer Service' rep what the compatible modems for your area are. It seems Comcast has done some 'upgrades' to the Washington network that have made some of the older modems incompatible. Note: You may have to go to a second tier agent because Comcast seems to have failed to inform their first tier about the change and they only know about it if they have had a customer bring it to their attention previously.

If you're leasing a modem, you can go down to the regional office and swap your modem, or you can have a truck sent out to do the swap. If you've purchased a modem (like me), you can either buy a new one that is compatible with the updates, or you can go to the leased modem.

I take it that Kent,or at least in your area has upgraded to QAM256.What model of modem are you using? Also can you do a screenshot of your modem signal page?

I'm in Federal Way and still on QAM64 as of today any how.

I just had a tech out to my house (same issue as above posters). Last Friday, I swapped my rented RCA for a Motorola Surfboard 5120. Phone tech was unable to initialize hence the house call today.

Unfortunatley, what ever the issue was, it's resolved itself. The tech did replace all outside connectors (nice tech) and did find a loss of signal between the tap and my house. This appears to be causing a low SNR. They're sending a another truck in the next couple of days to run a new line to the house.

Actually, I've always had a low SNR and had no issues (go figure). In the past I've run a web server and currently I surf and game online (FFXI) quite a bit with no problems (except for last week).

I'm in South Bellevue and our drops are underground with no conduit (poor planning). It's going to be interesting to see if they will have to run a new line. I confirmed with Comcast they are responsible for the cost of that if it comes to it.

I have heard that they are suppose to have everything adjusted and working by the end of the month, but Federal Way hasn't even been upgraded yet.

Wow thanks for the info. I will give them a call ASAP and see if I can get a new modem. I am renting my current modem but I might as well just buy a new one and stop renting from them. I have one of the old 'shark fin' style 3COM cable modem for 3 years almost.

Where would I find where my regional office would be? I'll try comcasts website and see if it's there right now.

***Edit***
Modem model # is 3CR29220 and comcast says that it's not DOCSIS 1.1 compatibly but is 'OK' to leave on the network. They also note that this model cable modem should not be used again if they are returned back to them.

I'm getting a picture that my modem = not good with whatever changes occured.
