Thx for posting. I was waiting for RCN's response to Verizon's new Fios service... this is clearly it. Also keeps us a step ahead of RR, as usual. Very nice.

Very impressive move by RCN from the jaws of bankrupcy. I have been having A+ service from them during my short tenure and it seems to be still improving. Shame that I'm back to college soon and won't be able to enjoy this fully.

BTW, what about the upload speeds?

THis will only destroy the network.

RCN will advertise 7 and sell it but it will just kill off the network is right. They are bankrupt. How can they afford to upgrade the systems? They cant. It just means routing and everything else will suffer and is pure marketting to keep existing customers.

Thank goodness Verizon FTTP is coming so I dont have to put up with this RCN bullshit. 15/2 for $49.95. Im there as soon as it rolls out. Since its not DSL, there will not be line quality issues and Verizon has deep pockets. I checked a # in the building on the Verizon website and it says its coming. Verizon generally deploys pretty quick going from how they handled its wireless infrastructure. However fiber requires trunking and the like so I dont know. To Equip Central offices with the EQ will be easy and will be done very quick. But to roll out the fiber in the streets especially in areas where trunking is required, that will take alot of time.

One other point.

"We have the perfect combination of the best games and music applications with the fastest Internet service in the industry," said Elad Nafshi, Director of Internet and Phone Product Management. "It doesn't get any better than this."

We all know Optimum Online is the fastest in the industry. I hate liars. Everyone in the industry knows Optimum Online is the fastest. Soon Verizon will be the fastest tho.

Meanwhile many areas still have one way cable. But hey, lets keep investing more and more on speed upgrades than more customers.

This will be so funny, Now I'll get 5mb down and 12k up.

Will the upload remain at 800kbps?

Re: [RCN] Mach 7

Good. I wonder what will happen to all the assholes that vehemently proclaimed the US will *never* see comparible speeds to Canadian 'net providers outside of Optimum Online. I'm sure they'll find another venue to bitch at anyone who wants improved service over the course of time.

Rock, rock on.

This puts speakeasy's 6mbit/768bkit tier to shame. If only speakeasy could lower that tier to $80-$85, it's just about right.

It's not April fools day is it?

Hell, I'm, still waiting for my M3 to provision and now they're saying M5?? Wonder if I'll even see M3 before the boost.

Well all I know is those of us on good nodes will be very happy. I feel for the rest of you.

nice time for RCN to screw with me..
I got curious and decided to check my modem config and realized i was DOWNGRADED to 3mb service when I'm suppose to be (and was) on 5mb..
-----------
QoS max upstream bandwidth = 800000 bps
QoS max downstream bandwidth = 3200000 bps
-----------
I will be on the phone with them shortly.

Indeed.. I upgraded to the Mach 5 service and can't even pull 3mbps .. I'm sure there's "factors" causing this, but still.. it's just not right ..

"Not available in Chicago and SENY. Chicago cable modem speeds are up to 1.5 Mbps download and 256Kbps upload."

»Re: Better hold on...

Unless there website needs an update. Which it very well may. It looks like the answer is clear on there Mach 5 page.

RCN DOES have a largly fiber network in most markets... Just because they are bankrupt doesnt mean their current network cant support 7mbit. People will not download that much more... They will just get what they want to download quicker. It could be argued that it would make the network less congested.

Lol, I got a flyer in the mail last week advertising the new Mach 7. I called about it and apparantley the flyer was sent out by mistake. However, I was assured it would be available "in about a month". The rep also didnt bother to tell me it would be automatically upgraded from my current 5Mb. Lol, I'll prolly get sneakily downgraded to 3Mb again.

default7.cm plz, thx

You can bet I'd drop RCN in a second of Verizon rolls out 15/2 for $50. That's ridiculous. >:)

Well I called tech support about my reduction in service.. All the tech had to say was "oh..i'll go ahead and fix that for you".
No word as to why it was "unfixed" in the first place.
Eveyone might want to take a look at their modem config and see exactly what speed they're set to. It might just not be what you're paying for.

Well, I for one think this is great. I'm in Chicago, and have been getting 3 for sometime now. I think i'll give this a shot- never thought i'd be getting 7 down just a couple months ago, when I was stuck on 1.5...
