| DW6000 Setup Tips
I'm about to go on board with DirecWay because I live at the hind-end of the universe where you get laughed at if you suggest to the local carriers that they should upgrade their lines to offer DSL or Cable Internet. It's also a perk of my new job (for remote management) and I'm inheriting 2 other existing installs that I have to upgrade and maintain.
Can some of you who have the systems working please offer me configuration and setup steps and tips to get the DW6000 system running with a wireless router/firewall like the Netgear FM114P to support 2 or 3 wired PC's and a couple of wireless connections?
Particularly I need to have an FTP server at one site for recieving data from business sites. I know there are issues with FTP on DirecWay - Is that both ways or just uploading?

Hello cavingreer and welcome to the BBR Satellite Forum.
You need to state which sort of Direcway system you are inheriting -- the DW4000 or the DW6000?

For an FTP server you will definitely need the professional level of service with a routable IP address. See the following for more information:

Per the first reply - I think I'm in the right forum since you directed me to Direcway Satellite and I'm in Direcway Satellite.
Per the second reply - as stated in the topic - DW6000
In one of the 2 existing setups I now have to maintain, there is an inherent problem with a client program. The user is running Jeppesen FliteMap (pilot flight planning, weather, etc.) and it requires port 24900 to operate. Originally the program worked, but when they tried to connect a Linksys wireless router Flitemap stopped working. I just checked the site out. The first thing that seems very strange is that you can't change ANYTHING in the DW6000 - only view the settings. And NAT is listed as Disabled. All internet works fine, but you cannot access the Jepptech web portal in I.E. (at port 24900) and the program cannot connect to the Jeppeson server.
I had the router set up so that NAT is enabled and as far as I can tell no ports should have been blocked. But I also disconnected the router and even with the PC connected to the DW6000 directly we still could not use the program. Is it possible that (even though they deny it) Direcway is blocking the port range we need? Is there a hard reset on the DW6000? Since the system worked at first it may be something stuck in memory that a hard reset would fix.
Sorry for being so wordy but it's very disturbing when you work on a site for 2 hours and have more questions than answers. |

That's fundamentally correct, although you can change some settings by telnetting to port 1953. Nothing to do with NAT, ports, or IP, though. There are two versions offered; Consumer comes with NAT enabled and all ports blocked, and Pro or Business with Nat disabled and no ports blocked. They are telling the truth when they say they aren't blocking any.

Hard reset is done by power off/on. Normally a soft reset will do the job just as well. That is done via the telnet route and an rr command, or you can download the utility I wrote that will do that with one click. Look at »www.datastormusers.com/reset6000.cfm

| Wanted to verify for all following that this is the PRO version, NOT consumer. Have been trying to hit the client program's web service from other sites on Bellsouth DSL and they also will not connect, so now it would seem the software vendor is having problems. Also cannot get their tech support on the phone or email - not looking good for Jeppesen at this point.
I'm going to hard reset the box, (thanks for the tips!)clear the DNS on the box and put our wireless router back on line as we had it working before. The only problem with that setup is that to get to the DW6000 status page you have to type the static IP instead of the 192. address since it is now outside your lan. (really not a problem). If anyone can find a way to get to www.jepptech.com:29400 please let me know. I've tracert'd the address and it dies is about the 15th hop.
As for the service it appears to work well, except that on the status page it pops to "warning" about every other refresh, with an indication message that the signal has dropped below 80%. still works, but I may need to get someone with an analyzer to check the signal lock and re-aim the dish. |

You are correct. It took me awhle to realize that the forum had been moved to the right place. Apologies.
To (maybe) finish up this forum I just would like to say to all that I have now been involved in two setups. One Pro and one Consumer. If you don't overcomplicate things it works as well as can be expected.
Once the DW6000 is set up and tested OK with your main PC, release the DHCP address on your PC (IPCONFIG /RELEASE).
Plug your router/gateway/firewall box up to the DW6000 and crank it up. Let it come ready so it has the info from the DW6000.
Plug your PC up to the router and renew your address
(IPCONFIG /RENEW) and you should get everything from your Router with it's default settings.
Log into your router and check everything out. Then verify that Browsing and Email work. Then fine tune the firewall and other settings to your needs. Just make sure that the router is running DHCP, because the DW6000 will only give out 1 IP Address - to the router.
The only problems you will normally run into is if you
are trying VPN, FTP, Web Servers, Etc. But most of this can be resolved by setting the configuration in your router accordingly. |

1st - as in my post in the original DW6000 Setup Tips thread, I apologize for my insolence. It took me awhile to realize that the entire topic had been moved. And it is better to ask than assume that I had posted the correct subject. 2nd I want to thank everyone whose still following this thread for their concern, ideas and help.
After much work I have verified that there were some trojans and spyware running on the PC at the site. With them gone I can now connect to the test servers at Jeppesen. However the client still will not connect. Tracerouting and Pinging will not help because Jeppesen's admin's have disabled that for proteciton.
I have a connection test program that I recieved from the tech assisting with our case, and will be testing it tomorrow. It works fine on Bellsouth, so it will be interesting to see if it works on Direcway. The error code we are getting has something to do with a Proxy, and I'm wondering if Direcway's "ghost" proxy system is the problem. But this system worked before April or May of this year ??!!??
In the meantime I have a new NetGear FWG114P onsite and everything appears to be working well through it. Will post the results of the test program here. If it doesn't work I would like to get someone else to try it on their Direcway system to see if it's this site or all of Direcway. |

You said above that you had two systems that you were dealing with; one with the "Professional" level of service and one with the "Consumer" level of service.
If I'm understanding your situation correctly - one system is working for you and one isn't?
. . . . Or is one computer on one system working while another computer on the same system is not working?
You are referring to a "client" that can't/won't connect. In this forum we generally use the term "client" to refer to a system that is getting an internet connection through another machine (as would be the case with a DW4000 system that shares the connection via ICS). Since this is not your situation, I don't quite know what you mean by the term.
