Still stuck, XP downloading ~500k slower than 98

I'm flat out of ideas. I just upgraded a week ago to the pro package, have verified the RT, Syncrate, and RBACK profiles are all correct. On my fiancee's laptop running win98 and not tweaked at all I get around 2.45 down, 350 up. On my desktop running XP I can't seem to get more than 1.9 down and 350 up. On the helpful advice of gdm, sbcj, and others I've applied the TCP stack fix, removed all the network components on the NIC inside network properties, rebooted numerous times, rebooted the modem and router, have tried 2 nics, 2 cables, 2 router ports. For some reason it reports faster d/l's on the speedtests here at dslreports.com, but still the highest I got was 2.2 on my pc.

link to tweak test:
»ttester.broadbandreports.com/twe···terpppoe

and the latest speedtests (I use eastcoast server exclusively so I have a good baseline):
2004-07-28 19:55:20 Speed test @ ec 2177/333 kbps
2004-07-28 08:29:15 Speed test @ ec 2133/328 kbps
2004-07-28 08:24:10 Speed test @ ec 2164/325 kbps
2004-07-27 23:54:02 Speed test @ ec 2120/325 kbps

Have you tried your machine with out the router in the loop? Did you change out the cat5 cable from your machine to the router? Did you try a different input on the router? I only ask because I have seen this happen with speeds being down only to find out one of the router's inputs were bad. Or the cat 5 cable was bad for some reason. Sometimes it's that simple. It happen to me with a bad input on my router. Just given you some more idea's to look into.

Good luck.

So you removed the QoS Packet Scheduler? Only thing I can think of.

Wings: yeah 2 different cables, both in both nics, both in both router ports.

dslknowitall: i thought I did, not sure now, that does seem like the most likely candidate, it's just weird I never noticed it on the 1.5 plan. I'm gonna look into removing that again and make sure it's fully disabled.

and I don't think it's the router interfering because the laptop is behind the router too.

edit: qos is disabled, can't find how to fully remove it, but it was set to 0% and is also disabled.

I know it's basic, but have you run Spybot and Adaware?

yessir, the only thing they find is tracking cookies. Spybot does routinely find DSO Exploit which is weird because I use firefox mostly, and I always select fix. But it always comes back so I'm not sure what that's about.

And Lev, at this point I'm really not offended by "basic" suggestions..lol

That DSO problem is just Spybot not fixing a registry key correctly. Consider it cosmetic.

Did you try swapping the ethernet cables? Another reach, but I'm tapping out.

Kro,

We are all missing some thing but I just can't think of what else is left to try.

You have done 2 different NIC's, cable, different ports on the router, uninstalled all networking components....

Hmm not that this should matter but what is your NIC card set to in it's properities....i.e. Autosense, 100, 10 etc.

autonegotiate, I'm running an nforce2 mobo, with the onboard nic and the latest nforce drivers I can choose between focus on cpu or throughput for the nic, with both settings it didn't change the speed. I don't remember what speed my router is, netgear rp614v2 w/latest firmware rc from april this year, so I didn't choose any of the other options (10, 100, half, full duplex). I didn't get to try uninstalling tcp/ip yet, I'll do that tonight and uninstall all the networking components like you suggested, odd that it wouldn't let me uninstall tcp/ip, hopefully with the cable unplugged it will.

Krobar:

Running Zone Alarm 5 fully updated? I have 1500/256, and was running ZA5, and could only barely eke out 1000 down. I found this thread:

»Note To All Users of Zone Alarm V5

I disabled ZA5, and lo and behold I'm back up to 1250 or so. Not the 1300 that I used to have, but better.

Here's the thread that I was posting in:

»Attn ADSL Guy -- Speed problems

Asked Lev to put a sticky up for ZA5 users, but he didn't.

Maybe this will help. I was at my wit's end, too. I checked and rechecked, and installed and uninstalled. Beach Boy was helping, but it clearly wasn't at the SBC end.

Good luck

nope I haven't touched zonealarm in about 3 years, maybe more. I did see that, and I know it's not a problem on SBC's end...just chasing it down is being a pain. I didn't get a chance to try uninstalling tcp/ip tonight, been too busy with other things, I do plan on doing it if not tomorrow this weekend. I'll post then, hopefully it'll work...only other thing I can think of is reinstalling xp which I'd rather not do right now.

If you have a router with a built in firewall why run a software firewall? I never liked software firewalls. They mess up alot of things.

To block outgoing traffic. Such as worms, etc, that might have come in, although its doubtful since you have a hardware firewall.

If I understand things, both of the computers are hooked up to the same router and modem.

"..and I don't think it's the router interfering because the laptop is behind the router too. "

When trouble shooting nothing should be assumed. You should take the router out and try a direct hook up to the modem.

I would diable the software firewall. That might be slowing him down? It is an app running in the back round using up PC resource's.

Wings: I don't HAVE a software firewall, that guy was just posting it as a possibility if I was running one.

Gus: I'll try removing the router, I really have my doubts that will do anything because as I said I used different ports on the router also...and speeds on the desktop never changed.

Just wondering, I have mtu set to 1492 via drtcp, I also have it set to 1492 at the router, and apparently the modem, that shouldn't cause a problem should it? The laptop hasn't been tweaked at all, it's an install of win98 that's well over a year old too. :-\

Is PPPoe being handled by the router? I assume the modem is in bridge mode.

You've tried almost everthing, might as well pull the router, let XP handle/establish the PPPoe (a re-boot should do it), the defaults without any tweaks should work fine.

Your MTU with XP PPPoe will be 1480. I don't know if it should remain at that with your current config.

I thought he already removed the router to check speeds. I bet it will work with out the router. I have the modem do PPPoE. I did notice on my D-Link the MTU is 1500.

I hope your Desktop is not a Celeron CPU.
