windows update problem

Have been running xp sp2 rc2. Tried to install roxio media creator 7.0. Found that uninstalling sp2 allows roxio to install. re-installed sp2. Now I can't get updates. It goes through all the phases, up to the express or custom. Choose either and it comes back with this message:

[Error number: 0x80248011]
Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page. You may find the following resources helpful in resolving the problem:
For self-help options:

Windows Update Response Center

Windows Update Troubleshooter

Windows Update Newsgroups
For assisted support options:

Microsoft Online Assisted Support (no-cost for Windows Update issues)

Read more about steps you can take to resolve this problem yourself.

No, the error code is not listed anywhere, no, microsoft did not respond to the free update tech support request. No, Microsoft did not respond to the bug report either. No, I did not find anything about it in the microsoft technet newsgroups (not to say it isn't there somewhere). The closest solution was a glitch involving sp1 install, uninstall. Anyone know about this?
Thanks
tim

Does the Windows update.log file offer any clues?

I've tried the site with Auto update on and off. The last attempt was with AU on after restart.

I've searched high and low....and found only one other person with the same error. The recommended fix below was provided by one of the MS newsgroup regulars, Lucy (MSFT):

For this error try the following:

Register MSXML3.dll

1. Click on the Start button

2. Click on RUN

3. In the Run box type “regsvr32 MSXML3.dll” (without quotes)

Click OK

Got the same advice at TechNet, did it sucessfully, but update show same error. Since this rc2 is v2149, I went ahead regsvr'd xml 4, also sucessfull, but still no luck, I also did everything in internet explorer tools: del files, cookies, offline files, trusted sites config, all with no luck.
Last night I uninstalled sp2, then uninstalled every single hotfix, one at a time. Re-installed sp2rc2 and update is still the same. Is it possible that I need certain services running? Auto update is running and set to auto start, rpc, sys restore etc. are running, just wondering if there is a service I don't know about. I did find a thread about this error code on technet, but no help.
Thanks
Tim

What services have you disabled?

Also, have you attempted to remove\reinstall the iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll? These should be removed from :\Windows\System32\Dllcache and :\Windows\System32.

Also, try this, from Usenet Archive, which is also advice from Lucy [MSFT], and has worked for some with similar error:

Error 0x80070005 accessing the Windows Update beta site, please try the following: (sounds familiar?)

Click Start > Run > Type the follow commands in the Open box (one at a time, in sequence):

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuapi.dll

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\atl.dll

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wucltui.dll

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wups.dll

One of these may not appear to work properly, but nevertheless, the whole sequence solved the problem for me. Thx to Lucy [MSFT] for the assistance; I'm only relaying her solution to this group in the hopes that many will benefit.

I've enabled or placed on manual, all services.
Auggy, all the commands worked except wuauclt.exe. The message was wuauclt.exe loaded but dll register point was not found. Wauauclt.exe does not appear to be a dll or ocx file.
In system 32 there is wauauclt.exe AND wauauclt.exe1. So I have a copy. Deleted but it came back. I'm thinking I've uninstalled and installed sp2 too much.

MSeng, I deleted the iuengin in both dll cache and sys32. "There is no iuctl.dll in either location."
I did find a iuctl.dll in

c:\windows\$ntservicepackuninstall$.

So, what the hell, i copied and pasted to the locations you mentioned. Still get the same exact error at update site. Not a major emergency, I can format, but don't want to. It would be nice to find out what went wrong though. This is what I get for playing with beta's, lol.

You need to have auto updates and BITS on automatic not on manual. I just got a response from the free update tech support on my WU issue (I can't run v5 as of yesterday but could before and can no longer get to v4). The customer service rep said that no support was being supplied until the official launch date of Aug 4 I think it is and my case was closed! I wrote back and said that since MS had chosen to push the update starting yesterday to XP boxes that they had to also provide support. So the customer service rep apologized and sent it to support and I am waiting for contact from the MS tech.

You should either start another request on line or call 1-866-727-2338 for free support on WU issues.

I have sp2 currently installed, sp1 needs the bits and auto update. I'm not sure about sp2. I did turn on bits anyway, but still no luck. Now I see a way to go to v4, but not sure what's going to happen.

GRRR...why can't Microsoft get their #$%$# Windows Update online support working properly? I just had the submission I made hang for about ten minutes and then time out and there was no way I could copy my post when I realized it was not going through as everything froze. So, I'm not writing that reply again. It wasn't a three word reply. The tech had asked that I let him know which, if any, of his suggestions worked. I was trying to let him know but I can sure see why most users don't respond with feedback because that online support is just awful. I had to try over and over getting repeated 401 errors before I could finally connect and then the time out when you are typing a reply is way too short. Plus, even if you didn't time out the reply won't send and freezes.

I still have an issue and I will call from now on. Forget that online help! You'd think Microsoft could get that working properly.

Anyhow, this tech told me that what Windows Update5 says about BITS is incorrect. BITS should be on manual. Ignore that WU says it should be on automatic. Also, you cannot leave auto updating on manual and start it manually before you go to WU. That is what I was doing. That worked with ver5 until two days ago when MS began pushing ver5 to XP boxes. The tech said I had to go into properties and set auto updating to automatic. Simply starting the process before going to WU5 is no longer allowed.

When I set BITS to manual and Auto Updating to automatic in properties then I had no problem using ver 5 just now. So, if you have auto updating set to manual try setting it to automatic. I'm not sure but I think it needs to be that way for SP2 also.

I still have no history in ver5. Ugh! I saw that post about uninstalling ver5 so you can get ver4. I really want my history. I wonder if I should try uninstalling ver5. Will my history be in ver4? It won't have the recent installations from ver 5 though. This is a mess! I'm going to have to call Microsoft about it.

Tim, this might be nothing to do with your problem. But,if you have tried everything else. Then,it probably wouldn't hurt to look at it.

Oh, now you've gone and done it. It hit me with thee survey. lol. I didn't look beyond first couple of pages, the chipsets mentioned don't match and there wasn't anything similar enough to follow through on. But thanks for pointing me to that page.

I'm sticking with the idea that it just won't present the page for me. Looks like WU is getting the info it needs, FROM me, and "knows" what updates are available for my particular config. It offers the page to express or custom install. So, it just won't lay the list on me. I'm getting bummed.

There are two wuauclt.exe files, two wuau.eng dll's that I've seen so far. Different sizes. Un deletable. Used Jermar tweaki to try and delete one. It's in recylce bin with the rest of them, and new one is created. Tried renaming wuauclt1 to wuauclt but it didn't work.

How do I find ALL of the windows update files, folders, drivers and reg entries? If I'm going to format, i'd like to experiement a little first.

Did you have a real-time Virus Scanner active when you installed SP2?

Do you have a real-time virus scanner active while visiting Windows Update site, or any internet filtering software active?

Just the rc2 firewall, with windows update exception. Have tried it with Jermar tweaki running and not running. All sorts of configurations.
I wanted to change around some drives anyway so, I dumped it. See new thread.

Thanks MSeng, I did see how to get back to v.4, but formatted anyway.
Wanted to put windows on a smaller drive anyway.

Wanted to try some different things. One thing, was to install windows xppro and install sp2 without ever seeing sp1 or v.4 windows up date. It worked fine.

Was able to replicate the problem by turning off services but still didn't track it down to what I was experiencing.

Thanks
Tim
