| Verizon + MSN Premium = no POP3?! HELP!
When i first got my verizon dsl line, i automatically got MSN Premium for free. Therefore, i could access my msn/hotmail accounts through webmail, http-mail(outlook connector), AND pop3.
About a week ago, my pop3 access just went out. All I get is an msn login screen that never ends unless i cancel it.
MSN tech support is telling me that they CANNOT access my file because I am a verizon customer and that i have to contact verizon. They also assured me that as long as I have an MSN Premium account, i SHOULD BE ABLE to access my msn mail through pop3.
When I call verizon, they tell me that they do have access to my account but that the msn premium accounts they support no longer have pop3 access. And they tell me that it's MSN's choice, that all the msn/hotmail accounts have to be transitioned from pop3 to only webmail and http-mail. They told me that i HAVE TO USE outlook connector if i want to use Outlook 2003. The representative REPEATEDLY told me that I CANNOT AND WILL NOT be able to access my msn mail through pop3 anymore.
I DO NOT WANT to access my mail through outlook connector simply because it's slow.
Now, to me, this is all a big load of you know what. Verizon is advertising their DSL connection comes with FREE MSN PREMIUM. That's already false advertising there since the MSN PREMIUM they offer DOES NOT have all the capabilities that the REAL MSN PREMIUM has. If i can't access my @msn email through pop3, and I AM an MSN premium customer, then something must be wrong.
Verizon representatives, please see if any of this information is incorrect in any way. I hope the customer representatives in this forum can help me better than the tech support on phone.
I await your reply.
PS: Now for all those smartasses out there, I am currently using hotmail popper BUT i do not want to use it as I was previously able to access my email through pop3. |

| I hate to break it to you, but Verizon is right. They promised you a Hotmail account, but not how to access your account. The Outlook connector is fine, and they are making improvements to it all the time. No its not pop3, the only thing i can say to you is that if pop3 is a big deal to you use Verizon's e-mail account. They provide pop3.
Keep in mind that Verizon and MSN will be working on a deal to get larger e-mail boxes in the future. Pop3 is actually a more expensive method than he outlook connector method you need more servers to handle simultaneous requests and time-outs would be more frequent. This is the reason why people like yahoo and MSN charge for that service; Your get MSN for free and your able to use Outlook, you can't even get mail into outlook for yahoo or GMAIL, or Walla. |

| reply to emberwilde POP3 would probably be cheaper to maintain in reality. For several reasons:
-You only need the mail server, not a web server as well. -You don't have to create and maintain POP3 like HTTP. HTTP access means you have to create a website, maintain it, and pay developers to continue to maintain it. -HTTP would have all kinds of additional things beind downloaded. HTTP Headers, pages, formatting, etc... whereas POP3 only needs to send the message to the client when requested. Thus, HTTP will use MANY times more bandwidth. -POP3 is simpler. You connect, authenticate, and download messages. With HTTP you have to worry about browser support, cookies, additional security, etc.
The primary reason I have for providers like Yahoo to charge for POP3 is this:
They can force you to view ads on webpages, but POP3 does not have any built in way to force you to view ads while reading email, since just downloads the message. Also, people would find Ads inserted into their emails as way too annoying, so they could not just do that.
It's all about the $$... but not the way you were thinking. |

| reply to emberwilde If you download the Outlook Connector for MSN it's IMAP not HTTP. The builtin connector is HTTP. The OLC that uses IMAP is fine, more stable and faster than the old HTTP connector. It also gives you access to all your MSN folders.
Look under the client update or call verizon to find out how to download the OLC. -- Bush Credibility Twister | Air America Radio | The Brights |

| reply to emberwilde bhorow: Verizon DID NOT promise a hotmail/msn account. Take a close look at theire ads. They advertise "Verizon Online WITH MSN Premium". Having _NO_ POP3 access, their ad should state "Verizon with ALMOST MSN Premium".
AnonDSLTechie: Like you said, POP3 is proven fast and simple. Simpler than HTTP or IMAP. And I'd rather keep my messages in my machine rather than have it in their servers. Unless maybe I'm away from my pc.
sadowski: I'm using outlook 2003, which all msn websites indicate use the new IMAP Outlook Connector. Not the old HTTP one. All ms websites seem to prevent me from downloading a copy of the standalone install of outlook connector. And btw, IMAP is just as slow. Cuz it has to download the list of messages, blah blah blah.
My point being, the bundled MSN Premium SHOULD HAVE pop3 capability, otherwise, they shouldnt advertise it as Verizon Online with MSN Premium. They should advertise it as ALMOST MSN Premium.
Another thing, I WAS able to access it through pop3 before. And I believe its a matter of flicking a switch. Because all tier MSN/hotmail servers should have the same configuration. Just like when they activate a hotmail account to become a premium hotmail account.
Can a Verizon Tech please read this post? |

There isn't any solution for you, sucks, but it is true. If there was a work around, I'm sure you would have found it by now. Sorry, no good news for you. |

Fast for me, and as I said it offers full access to all folders which neither POP or HTTP does.

And install latest software to get the connector. You'll be upgraded to the latest client too if you haven't already been. -- Bush Credibility Twister | Air America Radio | The Brights |

| thewolfman: I was saying that I WAS previously able to access my msn mail through POP3 until about 1 1/2 weeks ago. There is a workaround (hotmail popper) but I dont want to waste 6mb of resources for a background operation. That's exactly why I want pop3. I dont want to waste resources every time i click on an email in IMAP.
jsmarkbrown: you completely missed the point. I do have pop3 accounts from verizon, but my main email is @msn. I want POP3 access to my msn account. Something i used to have until VOL made unfortunate changes that i am really pissed about.
sadowski: MSN Client sucks. I have the lates outlook connector. And IMAP is still slow. Like I said, I want my folders and email local. And IMAP is not the way I want to go.
If you check any MSN Premium offerings, they ALL include pop3 access. And only verizon's "Almost MSN Premium" doesnt. It's a simple matter of preference really. But quite frankly, they're offering a service that is incomplete.
Still, no VOL techs have replied to this. Talk about great tech support. |

| Keep in mind no VOL agents' have looked into this because this is not an offical forum that VOL techs look into, nor will it ever be.
Any advice you get here from VOL techs is purely of their own free will/free time, and usually off the clock.
The only ways you can get "official" tech support from VOL, or replies from VOL agents is, 1. call, or 2. online support with Support Center. |

| jothyn: I understand your point. All I wanted was a confirmation at least that someone has looked into it. If you read my post, I have had it with phone support from VOL. Quite frankly because of the long wait times, and the fact that the tech guy told me I can't get pop3 anymore because "msn is moving everyone to http-mail and pop3 is no longer an option".
On another note, what is another option to contact tech support? since officially, this forum is not a tech support area?
I've tried the support center but all it is is some humongous FAQ that does nothing. |

| reply to emberwilde thewolfman: it's kinda hard to calm down when you were on hold for 40 mins and then all the tech person does is repeatedly say "SIR, YOU CANNOT HAVE POP3 ACCESS ANYMORE. IF YOU WANT POP3 ACCESS, YOU HAVE TO HAVE A SEPARATE MSN PREMIUM ACCOUNT IN WHICH CASE YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY 9.95/MONTH". The annoying part is that she repeatedly said "YOU CANNOT HAVE POP3 ACCESS" to me like I was some dumbass. |
