Q: I have replaced my cable modem. How do I get InsightBB working again? (#4396) A: Thanks to drgnwiz8 for the original version of this info, which has unfortunately been superseded.
Some background: InsightBB keeps track of subscribers' cable modem info in two systems - ICOMPS (sic?), and SAS. ICOMPS is one of Insight's tools for administration of the InsightBB "last mile," such as CMTS (local office) equipment. However, SAS is actually controlled by AT&T, which administers the InsightBB backbone, as well as other up-the-chain services. ICOMPS and SAS don't update each other, probably due to the fact that separate companies run them.
InsightBB does permit subscribers to update their SAS info online, without having to call tech support. However, subscribers don't have similar access to ICOMPS. So, to switch cable modems, it's best just to contact InsightBB tech support ( /faq/5241 ), tell them you're switching your cable modem, and follow the instructions that they give you. You'll need to call them anyway to get ICOMPS updated, so you might as well have them help you out.
For the record, the instructions that they'll give you are here: help.insightbb.com/account/modem_change.html

Basically my question is this - I'm moving cities and will be setting everything backup through insight in another city. I'm gonna try and do the self install since I already have a modem. When I first hook it up I just want to hook it up straight to my pc to make sure it all works fine. I then will be hooking up a wi-fi router.
My question is as follows: I remember there used to be a webpage you could go to and update the MAC address. Is that still valid? You still must register the first device behind the modem - correct?
Would I need to call insight to make that change now?
Any help would be appreciated. |

My experience with this is no? I switched from a rented SB3100 to a 3Com unit. Then from the 3Com unit to an SB5100 all without calling Insight. Others have as well. Granted I've not moved from one city to another while doing this. But as long as your new area sees you as a paying customer. The self provisioning should still work.
Lots of previous links on how to do this. Can be found here

I also used this when adding a Linksys router to my setup. I no longer use the Linksys. Since my new VOIP DTA no longer needs a router to function.

| I will only be changing the first device behind the modem - the actual modem will never be changing. So hopefully after I get it working with the modem straight to the pc - I can unhook that - add my router - then a pc to the router - then hit that page up and be good to go.....
Is that URL somewhere listed in the FAQ - I need to do some digging in there I guess.... |

You can just use the MAC address (Physical Address of your Network card) of the PC you registered with in your router. All routers I've seen let you enter a MAC address manually. With one of your PC's and the Router having the same MAC address you can switch from going through the router or direct to the PC anytime you need to without registering a new number. |
