PestPatrol says eAcceleration and Stop-Sign are Clean!
-----Original Message----- From: Kelly M. Sent: Thursday, August 05, 2004 11:07 AM To: David Nason Subject: Re: Misrepresentation of eAcceleration products
Dear Mr. Nason,
Thanks for your inquiry. Your products have changed significantly and we can remove them from detection.
Your product has been evaluated and the research team has issued a "pass."
Our practice is such that your product's description should be removed in the next day or so, and that your product will no longer be detected in the next DAT build which usually occurs tommorow (Friday), though we are nearly certain that it will be eliminated within the next 14, provided that people update their DAT files regularly.
While it is possible for the system to redetect due to the number of applications and the smaller number of filenames, you should be in good shape from here forward.
As always, please feel free to respond with any questions or concerns you might have.
Best,
Ms. Kelly M. Product Manager, Research

1 edit | reply to davidnason Glad to hear it is "clean now". I have yet to try the newer versions but had very bad experiences with the earlier versions on friends systems I was working on. I do hope the company has some major changes and start putting out a good product and gets off the whole adware etc which is in my belief still prevelent.
Perhaps soon Stop-Sign antivirus can start being included in the tests at places such as Virus Bulletin etc etc? -- HABYA HABYA HABYA TEAR DOWN THE HEM STALKS EAT UP THE OLD MAN AND WOMAN AND CARRY OFF THE LITTLE GIRL MAY YOU DIE ALONE |

I guess this is as good a time to introduce myself as a new member of these forums as any.
I am an employee of eAcceleration Corporation; in fact, I was hired about 6 months ago as the CTO of eAcceleration. My name is David Nason, and Im sure you can get a pretty good idea of my background by googling me.
As you can see, Ive made no attempt to use a handle or to hide my email address. I will welcome any reasonable questions and discussions regarding eAcceleration, Stop-Sign, or any of our other product brands. I will try to pay regular attention to questions on this forum, as well as direct email (davidnason@eacceleration.com).
I would like to thank those of you in this forum who have been willing to reexamine eAcceleration and Stop-Sign. The company has reorganized in the recent past and is making a serious effort to correct its image. Many of the issues described in detail on these forums are a result (1) marketing practices that were then either new or frequently practiced in the industry, or (2) conflict or otherwise negative interaction with other applications, or (3) coding issues. As a result, eAcceleration recognized that many of its past practices needed to be changed and has made many dramatic changes in its organization, structure, and strategy to meet the needs.
I am not going to get into a discussion of why or what, regarding the past. I will discuss our present and future.
•eAcceleration Corporation has several products and brands. Virtually all are available through our main product, eAcceleration Subscription Service. Our brands include:
Stop-Sign - anti-virus, spyware remover, popup blocker, spam blocker, firewall Veloz - computer speedup service Kon-X - dialup ISP and email MegDat - which includes Online Backup OOdlz - ad-free games (online and local) and T4C
•eAcceleration Subscription Service has a large subscriber base. Our subscribers have full and unlimited use of all the brands/products listed above. They also get real-time telephone and live chat technical support.
•eAcceleration has a high-quality AV/research team. We are in the process of submitting our anti-virus product to ICSA, VirusBulletin, and checkvir.com for certification. Our technical staff, from management on down, has been completely revamped and is highly capable and efficient.
•We have begun communications with PestPatrol, COAST, and other anti-spyware entities in an attempt to have open and honest dialog aimed at changing their reporting of our current applications.
•I am willing to make available any non-proprietary source code to review, including the source to our Wren download component that has been discussed so prolifically on this forum. I look forward to hearing from you.
I posted this recently in another topic on this forum. As you can see, we've had success since then in our dialog with PestPatrol.

Glad to see your company is cleaning up it's act. That said, with it's past track record you have a ways to go to convince users that you have a good product. Perhaps a trial would be a good start. The scare tactics are enough to to prevent me from trying/recommending the product at the moment. |

I'll guess that PestPatrol is not the only antispyware vendor that you have made contact with regarding a de-listing of eAcceleration/StopSign with. 4 edits | reply to davidnason Dale, I don't know about the Kaspersky find on StopSign. Any further info? But I do appreciate David being willing to post on this forum and trying to explain his company's current policies and directions. I sincerely hope they're trying to change their past ways which, as most of us know, weren't looked on too kindly by security knowledgeable people! So David, the more info you post here (prolly the busiest and most cutting-edge 'puter security forum on the web!), the better for your employer. I hope you continue to post and that your product lives up to its self-espoused claims! Thanks! NanDog
Edit: In response to Dale's last post concerning RAV, seems like StopSign still has a way to go to clear up its name, huh? It reminds me of the old hackneyed phrase: "Fool me once, shame on you; Fool me twice, shame on me!"
We'll see where all this goes, won't we? It should be interesting! |

dadkins: I'm sure you've read the other topics on this forum in which a number of others here have already noted that PestPatrol, and subsequently others, had previously labeled the stub download component of eAcceleration's installer as a trojan. That is, of course, what you're seeing. And that is part of what PestPatrol is now saying is clean.
b11ng00: same answer - stop-sign_stp.exe (internal module name "wren") is the stub component being identified in your test.
As I said in an earlier posting, I was unwilling to "get around" that labelling by renaming/rebuilding the component, although it would have worked, because it might seem as if we were trying to "pull something". I opted to wait until it had been validated by an objective third-party (I think everyone would agree that PestPatrol meets that criterion). Now that it has been validated as "clean", we can rebuild it.
BTW, I have also offered to release the source to this and similar components.

Me thinks an answer to my question above deserves a response.
SnowyOne - all of them, of course. We've already approached many, and will initiate discussion with all as we find them.
PestPatrol was the first, as they seem to be a common source of information for many other entities. They are also a major component of COAST, to which we are also applying.

| reply to davidnason Please correct me if I am wrong, but isn't that *YOUR* downloader? From *YOUR* website(s)?
Is it not part of *YOUR* online scan?
That makes three websites that are connected to your company that this "Item" is downloadable from. Not good.
Here's a thought...disinfect/kill/replace the downloader that is being used for your online scan. Also, if you read towards the end of the other thread, you will see that the uninstaller that is being used by your company needs some serious work. Just ask novaflare what get's left behind.
I'm sorry, but you haven't convinced me that you have "Cleaned Up Your Act" yet.
Good luck! -- Nuke 'em all, let God sort 'em out. |

OK, PP was your first. If that were my question that would be an excellent answer. "All of them" doesn't speak to my original question either. You can start with who is "Second" if that helps. -- Dave said "By the way, 4294967295 is just another way to write -1". |
