BabarPremium join:2001-05-09 Washington 1 edit | The "Official" SP2 Bug Thread Let's get SP2 bugs, problems, and solutions referenced in one thread, shall we? (yeah, right! ) As many more users get the update this week, a summary of reports would be helpful.
This is certainly not to say a problem doesn't deserve it's own thread - it's almost always warranted, and helpful for future site searches. But, a brief description of the problem and a link to that thread here would be useful, particularly if a solution has been found. To link to a specific BBR post, click on the >> in the post, then copy and paste the url. For the whole thread, just copy the url.
Examples:
Problem: Security Center doesn't know my NAV status. Solution: Symantec to update NAV on 8/10: »service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ts···r_na_con
Problem: Explorer crashes or memory leaks when right-clicking files (also reported in SP2 Final). Possible solution: Many are reporting compatibility problems with certain versions of DivX and/or Roxio: »board.iexbeta.com/ibf10/index.ph···ic=44629 »forums.divx.com/viewtopic.php?to···forum=13
No "Working great here!" posts, please.
edit - the intent is to provide a single source of links to yours or others' discussions of, and possible solutions to Windows XP SP2 FINAL bugs, problems, and issues. Please restrict issues to the final release - no beta's! -- "Geez, I'm goin' crazy out there at the lake."

Was this the RTM SP2?
I've heard of isolated cases of monitors being set out of range so, of course, you wind up with a blank screen even though the computer booted successfully. In fact, it happened to me with a slipstreamed install with a desktop LCD. I just turned the monitor off, then back on and reset the timing. Unfortunately, you can't do that with a laptop.

A NO GO! Microsofts recommendation? Switch AntiVirus providers. Yeah.... okay? I will monitor my own AntiVirus software. Anybody else encounter this with H+BEDV AntiVir?

Not really a bug... but if you upgrade don't forget to defragment. I just defragmented this morning... installed sp2 and now look at the fragmentation. WOW Just thought this might help those of you if it seems to run slower, check out the fragmentation. |

Compaq Armada E500 Laptop PIII 600 256mb memory Windows XP SP2 2180 - Upgrade/not clean install
Bug:
Wireless Network Adapter: EnGenius NL-2511CD Plus - IEEE 802.11b - PC Card
Problem:
Two year old driver and installed the wrong language for WLAN network adaptor Wireless LAN Configuration.
Yah would think MS would have the latest and greatest drivers!
Fix: Uninstall Windows Driver and download from the manufacture!
That sucked!
Additional Note:
The last RC version wasn't able to install the drivers.
Next I'll test the Cisco Aironet 350 PC Card...
Cisco Aironet:
By Default, Windows installs a 2 year old driver. Ran Update driver and Update over Windows Update and the driver is dated 2/14/2003
Good side is that it works fine... Now to go to Cisco to get the latest drivers... -- They're not bugs in the program, they're just undocumented features... |

I've had nothing but bad experiences since I installed SP2 earlier today.
First off, opening My Computer now takes a long time to load. Everytime I start "My Computer," it would begin to "search for items" as seen above, and would usually last for five to six minutes.
Second, while trying to make a screenshot of the loading My Computer with Paint, MSPaint no longer functions. The process exists, but there is no window. None at all. Since Paint wasn't going to work, I also tried to use Photoshop CS. Seems to freeze at "Scanning for plug-ins...". I ended up using IfranView to create the screenshot.
I have yet to find any other problems, but I am sure that these are not the only ones.
Please excuse me if these were problems introduced prior to the release of SP2, and if this is to be the case, please guide me to the solutions.
Thanks. -- Creativity is great, but plagiarism is faster. |

I've read another thread where people have said it has made their system faster. I'm in your boat. It has made mine slower for some reason. I'm running 2.6ghz w/768mg ram so I wouldn't think it would be because of my system specs....
This should be interesting. |

RangerTX7R.I.P. beloved Trooper dogPremium join:2004-01-29 Austin, TX | reply to Babar I do a lot of video encoding and have two machines which, hardware-wise, are more than up to the task. Slipstreamed SP2 RTM and did a clean install; numerous problems (blue screens, "memory could not be 'written' ", spontaneous reboots, etc. etc.) have occurred. I have never encountered so many problems with any build of XP, including pre-release betas.
SVCD2DVD refused to reload, a result of SP2's DEP, which I was able to fix by following this good advice: »www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopi···t=232276
I removed ffdshow and divx in favor of xvid; however, unlike others, I still experienced problems. Overall, I am no longer able to successfully encode in Sonic, Mainconcept, Ulead, TMPGEnc 3 (2.5 Plus works), or Canopus. No combination of codecs has proved 100% successful.
My experience with RTM is a duplication of my problems under build 2149. I've ghosted back to SP1 (I have work to accomplish ) and the problems have vanished. I've left SP2 on my Athlon 64 and will continue to experiment/seek solutions as time permits.
Some friendly advice for fellow encoders: Don't do SP2 yet; apparently, there are many issues to resolve. |

I had a custom boot screen loaded via StyleXP, which replaced the usual XP Pro bootscreen with a custom one. It renamed the kernel to kernel1.exe
Solution: Edit boot.ini and remove any "kernel" references in this line (or similar):
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
You can replace it after the install completes |

JHBCalifornia Dreamin' join:2002-02-08 California | reply to Babar I know some users hate the words reinstall and reformat, but the smoothest transition into any service pack is a fresh install. It may take you 2-4 hours to back your stuff up and start fresh, but I think having all these errors are more stressful. If you've put it off for sometime now, this is a great opportunity to get Windows running properly. |

(In)another thread people have said it has made their system faster... It has made mine slower.
Same here with my P-II machine. SP-2 installed okay and all looked like it would be okay until I tried enabling the new "DEP" feature for all programs. Requires a reboot afterwards. Locked system and couldn't even boot to windows.
Disabling "Fast Boot" and "Flash User Binaries" in BIOS setting helps some. Then it goes into long boot and finally started. Now runs slower than before. Old system had little on it other than windows so did not reformat prior to installing SP-2. Maybe that would have helped.
Have not yet defragmented the HD. Will try that and see if it helps. Till then, here are present conclusions:
1) If can't boot after installing SP-2, try resetting bios to disable fast boot option. 2) Stay away from DEP settings with older systems and hardware. |
