Spybot's done the job for me all by itself. This past weekend I worked on a machine with a dozen distinct pieces of spyware (300 traces in all, AFTER I cleaned up the obvious stuff manually) and Spybot cleaned it right out after 2 or 3 passes. Even a (thank goodness) low-order CWS infection.
Ad-Aware's not necessary, although it doesn't hurt as a secondary check.

That's the (2) I use and recommend every day. Then you have to explain that someone also needs a popup-blocker (I point 'em to Google), trojan finder/cleaner software, anti-virus, kept up-to-date, which NEVER are, and the list goes on. 
I hate needing two programs, Adaware and Spybot, to do the same job though... |
