What's your day job ?

Hi All,

I am a engineer, with a lot of interest in photography and digital imaging, currently playing with my first digicam (check my blog link in the signature).

With the day job keeping me busy most of the week, only time I get to do some photography is in the weekends or on vacations. :-(

I was wondering
  • What do you guys do as your day job?
  • Also, when do you take most of your pictures ?
  • How do you satisfy your creative hunger if you are not a full time photographer/artist/journalist ?

Computer Science will be my degree by May 2005 and My current Job is Computer Technician/Programmer for "The Center for Distance Learning" department( »cdl.panam.edu ) at the University of Texas Pan American( »www.panam.edu ).

What our department does is handle all the online courses, we deal with students for troubleshooting, and the professors for getting their courses on the web. Right now I'm pretty much doing nothing LOL since its end of Summer sessions and Fall semesters dont start for another 2.5 weeks. I handle 3 CD/DVD duplicators, 15 workstations and handle the virus protections, upgrading, maintaining.

Overall its the best job I've had, the work environment is so calm and cool I really enjoy being there.

Our website hasnt been updated in a while so a lot of the new staff isnt listed which gives me something to bring up to the boss LOL. We need to update that page.

As for pictures. I'm out of work by 5pm so After work I will usually head home, eat something, drive out to the Ranch, take some photos and come back by night time. OR, during the week when our Local minor league has baseball games I'll just go with my cousin and take pics there. If I'm not at work, school, or playing PC games, I'm usually reading these very forums or out taking pictures.

By day, DSL and POTS(plain old telephone service)technician for BellSouth. Thank god we didn't go on strike. By night and weekend, I have a custom computer building business that I am trying to get going, but it's kind of slow right now. Also a full time dad and I try to fit in time for photography, I am scheduled about 1 Saturday a month which means I get a day off during the week and I usually try to take off on a short road trip to take pictures on these days off. A lot of times, I just take an afternoon walk in the woods behind my house and try to find something to take pictures of.

By day, I'm the corporate controller for a building products / contracting company with operations in 9 states. I also play golf, help teach scuba (hence, the avatar), and am active in two car clubs (Mazda Miata and BMW Z3). That doesn't leave near enough time for photography, so most of my photos are vacation related.

Golf is a relatively simple game, played by reasonably intelligent people, stupidly.

I am a university professor. I squeeze photography into weekends and conference travel. British Columbia is a fantastic place for photography.

Well, I yoosta work but have been retired since Labor Day, 1991. I was in the construction, real estate and insurance business in my working days. I got completely wiped out in a nasty divorce. I just never had the motivation to start over after that and decided to hell with it. My lifelong ambition was to do some sculpture, paintings and write a novel or two, so that's all I do now. I am forever starting something and putting it aside knowing no one is waiting for me to finish. That's the glory of it. I am having fun and nothing else. Photography was always a necessary utility connected with my work so now it has become part of my artwork. I never dreamed it could go to the lengths it has. A classmate of mine went to work for Bell and Howell in 1953 and quit after 20 years saying it was boring: "What else can be done with a camera?" Thirty years since that proclamation and I can't forget it.

I'm an IT Consultant for a bank consulting firm in Dallas. I do a lot of VB programming & write data models for our project teams. I used to be on the road 4 days a week, but that's settled down now & I hardly have to travel at all.

My photography business is a side venture that I hope to take full time someday. But for now, it's nice extra income.

I'm a banker...corporate trustee to be exact. I work with issuers of debt securities, such as tax free municipal bonds and corporate debentures. I work with huge amounts of money, but never get to keep any of it.

Photography is my way of relaxing and taking my mind off of work.

Just VB. We haven't migrated to .NET here.

I've been working with C# for close to 3 years now. I had to look at an old VB6 app today. It's hard to go back!

-What do you guys do as your day job?

I'm an engineer (chemical) with a small consulting company, so I do whatever the clients ask.

-Also, when do you take most of your pictures ?

Sporadically during weekends and evenings, mostly during day trips it seems lately, much less during busy work periods.

-How do you satisfy your creative hunger if you are not a full time photographer/artist/journalist ?

Trying to get good family candids and portraits. I seem to lose inspiration sometimes, only for it to pop back up unexpectedly.
